Changdou travel guide

The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is noticeable, so bring warm clothing when you travel.

Chamdo is an important gateway to eastern Tibet. Compared with Lhasa, its snow-capped mountains, canyons, ancient monasteries, and Khampa culture retain a more vivid original character. Downtown Chamdo sits at about 3,240 meters above sea level and has a relatively mild climate, making it a good place to acclimatize on a first trip to Tibet.

  • Jampaling Monastery: A large Gelug monastery in the Kham region, with grand architecture and beautifully preserved murals. In the evening, you can walk around the monastery with local residents, or look out over the full view of downtown Chamdo from the steps.
  • Zizhu Monastery: This Bon monastery stands on a cliff at an altitude of 4,800 meters and is known as a “sky city in the clouds.” Its six halls are scattered among red sandstone cliffs. When the morning mist rises, the monastery and the valley form a striking scene together.
  • Ranwu Lake: One of the larger lakes in eastern Tibet, divided into upper, middle, and lower sections. The water shows different shades of blue-green depending on the season. In the early morning, you can often see snow-capped mountains reflected on the lake surface. It is also an important scenic stop along National Highway 318.
  • Laigu Glacier: The glacier’s front edge stretches to the lakeside, and meltwater from its blue ice flows into Ranwu Lake. The meeting of ice, snow, and lake water creates clear and impressive layers of scenery.
  • Nujiang 72 Turns: A famous steep and dangerous section of the southern Sichuan-Tibet route. Looking down from the viewing platform, you can see the mountain road winding continuously below and clearly understand the overall route through the mountains.
  • Karuo Ruins: A prehistoric civilization site dating back more than 4,000 years, and one of the earliest known ancient civilization sites in Tibet. It is suitable for travelers interested in archaeology and the history of eastern Tibet.

5-Day Essential Chamdo Itinerary

  • Day 1 Arrival and acclimatization: After arriving in Karuo District, Chamdo, check in to your hotel and rest. In the evening, take a walk to Tea Horse Square and the confluence of the two rivers; the Angqu and Zhaqu meet here to form the Lancang River. You can try butter tea and Tibetan noodles that day to help your body gradually adapt to the plateau environment.
  • Day 2 Cultural immersion: Visit Jampaling Monastery in the morning to learn about its ancient architecture and local religious culture. In the afternoon, go to the Chamdo Museum to learn about the history of the ancient Eastern Women’s Kingdom and the origins of civilization in eastern Tibet.
  • Day 3 Hidden sky city: Travel by car to Zizhu Monastery; the one-way drive takes about 5 hours. After arrival, look out over the canyon from the cliffside location at 4,800 meters and experience the unique setting of this Bon sacred site. Return in the afternoon, enjoying the canyon scenery of eastern Tibet along the way.
  • Day 4 Canyons and glacier: Follow National Highway 318 to the Nujiang 72 Turns and view the winding mountain road from above. Then continue to Ranwu Lake to enjoy the reflections of snow-capped mountains. Arrive at Laigu Glacier in the evening and observe the blue ice landscape up close.
  • Day 5 Prehistoric civilization and return trip: Return to the city to visit the Karuo Ruins and learn about prehistoric civilization from more than 4,000 years ago. After that, return according to your flight or self-driving schedule, or continue on to your next stop.

Recommended Local Foods in Chamdo

  • Mushan Stone Pot Sour Soup Yak Beef: Cooked in a local stone pot, this dish has an appetizing sour soup flavor. The yak beef is relatively tender and suitable for eating in a plateau environment.
  • Eluo Bridge Barbecue: A barbecue restaurant that has operated in Chamdo for 28 years. It mainly uses high-heat grilling, with relatively simple seasoning that highlights the natural aroma of the meat. Grilled wings, lamb skewers, and Eluo Bridge potatoes are common choices here.
  • Qingmuge Hand-Pulled Food City: Average spending is about 60 yuan per person, with halal-style meals. The hand-grabbed lamb has a mild mutton smell, the grilled lamb skewers are cooked to a moderate doneness, and tiger-skin green peppers help balance the flavors.
  • Chen Duoduo: A common local milk tea brand in Chamdo. Osmanthus fermented-rice tofu is one of its drinks, suitable for replenishing sugar and energy during plateau activities.

Transportation and Accommodation Guide

  • Transportation: Chamdo Bangda Airport is at an altitude of 4,400 meters, and it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the city. From the airport to the city, you can take an airport bus or share a business van, costing about 100 to 120 yuan. Attractions in Chamdo are far apart, so self-driving or chartering a car makes itinerary planning easier. When driving, be aware that plateau mountain roads have many bends, and drive carefully.
  • Where to stay: Karuo District downtown, especially the area around Tea Horse Square, is a convenient base for accommodation, with easy access to transport and dining. Hotels with oxygen supply can help ease altitude sickness. Self-driving travelers should choose hotels with free parking to reduce the inconvenience of parking in the city.

Plateau Travel Pitfalls and Things to Note

  • Preventing altitude sickness: Downtown Chamdo is about 3,240 meters above sea level. On the first day after arrival, avoid strenuous exercise, and it is not recommended to wash your hair or take a shower right away. Drink water in moderation, and prepare oxygen canisters and glucose. When going to Zizhu Monastery (4,800 meters) or the Nujiang 72 Turns (4,200 meters), pay even more attention to keeping warm, resting, and monitoring your body’s reactions.
  • Clothing and sun protection: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is large, so bring a hardshell jacket or down jacket year-round. The local UV rays are strong, so carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sun hat with you.
  • Respect local customs: Take off your hat and keep quiet when entering monasteries. Do not photograph Buddha statues or monks without permission. In Bon monasteries, such as Zizhu Monastery, the circumambulation direction is counterclockwise, unlike the clockwise direction commonly used in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. When visiting, you can follow the direction taken by local people.
  • Road conditions and fuel: Some sections of National Highways 317 and 318 have many sharp bends and may also experience traffic jams, so leave extra time in your schedule. It is recommended to fill up your tank whenever you pass a gas station, as the supply of 95-octane gasoline may be unstable in some remote areas.
