Tacheng has a noticeable temperature difference between day and night, so it is best to bring a jacket.
Tacheng is an often underrated small city on the China-Kazakhstan border. It has little heavy commercial atmosphere. Russian-style buildings with red brick and green roofs, a lively accordion culture, and a wide variety of ethnic breads together create a quiet yet distinctive urban character. The pace of the city is unhurried, making it well suited to exploring slowly on foot.
- Tacheng Red Building Museum: This century-old Russian-style red-brick building is an important landmark in Tacheng. The museum displays many cultural relics, and both the second-floor terrace and the outdoor red walls are great for photos.
- Tacheng Accordion Museum: This museum has the largest accordion collection in China, with more than 1,100 accordions from over 10 countries. If you visit at the right time, you may also hear a live performance.
- Baktu Port: This is the land port in Xinjiang closest to a city, only 12 kilometers from the urban area. You can visit the national gate and boundary marker, and look out toward the scenery on the Kazakhstan side.
- Twin Towers Park: Two red minarets stand facing each other across a green space. It is a place where local residents take daily walks and relax, with a strong sense of everyday city life.
- Little White Poplar Sentry Post: This is the real-life inspiration for the song *Little White Poplar*. Located at the foot of the Barluk Mountains, it is a place to learn about border-defense stories and look out over the mountains and rivers along the border.
- Turgaliao Grassland: This mountain grassland is backed by snow-capped mountains and covers a vast area. It has relatively few visitors, is suitable for horseback riding, and offers a more authentic taste of nomadic life.
Recommended 3-Day, 2-Night Slow Travel Itinerary
- Day 1: In-Depth City Walk and Food
- Morning: Start at the Red Building Museum to admire the Russian-style architecture and learn about Tacheng’s century-old border history through the exhibits.
- Afternoon: Visit the Accordion Museum to experience the cultural character of the “City of Accordions.” Then walk to Twin Towers Park and the former site of Bela Hotel to photograph city street scenes with an exotic feel.
- Evening: Take a breezy walk along Qianquan Lake, then head to a nearby night market for grilled meat and pan-fried buns, and experience the everyday warmth of this small border city.
- Day 2: Port and Grassland Scenery
- Morning: Go to Baktu Port to visit the national gate, then browse the China-Kazakhstan border market. You can buy Russian-style chocolate and dairy products there (a border pass must be arranged in advance).
- Afternoon: If time and weather allow, drive yourself or hire a car toward Yumin County and visit Turgaliao Grassland or Akqiaoke Grassland to enjoy wide-open mountain grassland scenery.
- Day 3: Nearby Nature and Departure Preparation
- Morning: Visit Emin Wild Fruit Forest to get close to nature. Alternatively, stay in the city and find a long-established bakery to buy souvenirs.
- Afternoon: Bring along bread, dairy products, and other souvenirs, and end your trip to Tacheng.
Must-Try Foods in Tacheng
Tacheng’s food is very friendly to lovers of carbohydrates and dairy products, blending flavors from Russian, Tatar, and Kazakh cuisines.
- Malosh Ice Cream: The name comes from a transliteration of the Russian word for “ice cream.” It is usually simmered with fresh milk, eggs, and white sugar, without adding water, giving it a rich milky aroma. You can try it at Western Yulisha or Yingbin Cold Drinks.
- Tacheng Cheese Bread: A large round loaf is cut into four wedges, spread with cheese on the surface, and then coated with walnuts, raisins, and other dried fruits. Both the wheat aroma and milky flavor stand out, and it also makes a good souvenir. Consider Lipa Bread and Pastry Shop or Xianglan Bakery.
- Pilaf with Air-Dried Meat: The rice absorbs the sweetness of mutton fat and carrots, while the air-dried meat has a texture close to aged veal steak and is not strongly gamey. When ordering, you can simply say, “Give me one with lamb leg.”
- Horse Meat Naryn: This is a Kazakh specialty. Freshly made wide belt noodles form the base, topped with slices of air-dried horse meat. It is best eaten hot.
- Handmade Sour Plum Drink: Tacheng’s sour plum drink is not made from powder. It is boiled with sour plums, raisins, dried apricots, hawthorn, and other ingredients. There is plenty of fruit pulp at the bottom of the cup, and the taste is sweet, tart, and refreshing. It also helps cut through oily food.
- Baked Samsa: It is best to eat them fresh from the oven. The crust is crisp, and the lamb and onion filling is juicy. The texture declines once they cool down.
Accommodation and Transportation Guide
- Accommodation Recommendations:
- For city walks and food: Stay near Culture Square or the Red Building Museum. It is convenient to walk to museums and food streets, and also easy to return and rest after visiting the night market.
- For a relaxed holiday: Choose accommodation beside Qianquan Lake. The surrounding environment is relatively quiet, and it is suitable for an evening walk.
- Transportation:
- Getting there: You can fly to Tacheng Qianquan Airport. The airport shuttle bus costs 20 yuan per person and goes directly to the city center (you need to call the driver one day in advance to make a reservation). You can also take a train to Tacheng Station, which is fairly close to the urban area.
- Getting around the city: Tacheng’s urban area is not large, and most attractions can usually be reached by taxi for the starting fare. Shared electric scooters are also available, but pay attention to designated parking spots when using them.
- Getting to the port: You can take Bus No. 8 from Culture Square directly to Baktu Port for 3 yuan per person, but services are infrequent. A round-trip taxi costs about 100 yuan, and it is more convenient to ask the driver to wait.
Notes
- Border pass: A border pass is required to visit Baktu Port and the Little White Poplar Sentry Post. You can apply online in advance through “National Immigration Administration 12367,” and the application area should include Tacheng Prefecture. If you only travel within Tacheng city, you do not need one.
- Opening hours: Tacheng Museum and the Accordion Museum are usually closed on Mondays, so check opening information before setting out. The Red Building Museum sometimes has an afternoon break, so it is also recommended to confirm before visiting.
- Temperature difference and clothing: In October, Tacheng has already entered autumn, with a large temperature difference between morning and evening. You may wear short sleeves during the day, but need a thick down jacket or hardshell jacket at night. Be sure to prepare enough warm clothing.
- Port shopping: In the China-Kazakhstan border market, some chocolate packaging is entirely in foreign languages. Check the place of origin carefully before buying, to avoid mistaking domestic products for imported ones.
- Willow catkin protection: If you visit Tacheng in spring (April to May), there are many willow catkins in the city. People with rhinitis are advised to wear a mask and goggles.
