Tongliao’s natural scenery combines the grasslands of Horqin, deserts, and forests. Mongolian cuisine also has strong local character, making the area well suited to a road trip or hired-car tour. Here is a suggested 3-day, 2-night itinerary.

  • Daqinggou National Nature Reserve: Pristine forest survives between the sandy areas, with streams running through the ravines. In summer, you can choose forest rafting or hiking, and temperatures are relatively cool.
  • Külün Yins Bay: The expansive dunes have fine sand. You can ride camels, go sandboarding, or take a desert off-road tour; sunset is a good time to enjoy the scenery.
  • Xiaozhuang Cultural Tourism Area: This is the hometown of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang. The grounds preserve and recreate Qing-era Mongolian princely residence buildings, offering insight into the history of grassland tribes in the early Qing period.
  • Jur River Grassland Tourist Area: Ten thousand mu of natural grassland creates broad views. The Naadam Festival is held every August, while horse riding and grassland activities are available year-round.
  • The Three Külün Monasteries: This complex is one of Inner Mongolia’s key surviving Qing-era buildings associated with Mongolian lama banners. It combines Tibetan, Mongolian, and Han architectural styles and has rich historical and cultural significance.
  • Hamin Archaeological Site Park: The park presents a Neolithic site dating back about 5,000 years, along with related artifacts. The museum is free to enter and is a good place to learn about civilization in the Liao River basin.
  • Xilamulun Park: A free recreational park in the city, with a small zoo where you can feed animals at close range. Afterward, you can also visit nearby Dalei Temple.
  • Tongliao Museum: Admission is free. Exhibits cover the history of the Horqin grasslands, local customs, and Mongol-Yuan culture, making it a good starting point for understanding Tongliao’s cultural background.

Must-Try Mongolian Food and Local Specialties

  • Saiwai Tianrun Hot Pot

The clear broth is ideal for cooking fresh mutton. The milk-tofu cakes are crisp outside and soft inside, while chives provide a refreshing contrast to the richness of the meat.

  • Fuwang Copper-Pot Hot Pot

The copper pot comes with pickled cabbage and glass noodles. The mutton is tender, and the portions are generous for the price.

  • Haqiu Hai

Yogurt topped with milk skin is the house specialty. The grilled skewers are richly flavored, and several small snacks are included with the meal.

  • Jia’s Restaurant

Milk-skin pizza is a local specialty. The burgers are juicy, the fried chicken is crisp, and the dining atmosphere is relaxed.

  • Dongjiao Yangjia Snack Restaurant

The crispy fried pork is crunchy outside and tender inside, while the pies have thin wrappers and generous fillings. It is a typical local halal restaurant.

Transportation and Accommodation Guide

  • Getting there: Visitors from outside the province can first fly to Shenyang, then take a high-speed train to Tongliao; the journey takes about 2 hours. Nearby cities such as Shenyang, Changchun, and Harbin are also suitable for driving to Tongliao.
  • Getting around the city: The urban area is compact. Taxis start at 6 yuan, and shared electric bikes cover the main commercial areas.
  • Getting to nearby attractions: Daqinggou, Yins Bay, and Xiaozhuang are far apart, and public transport is limited, so driving or hiring a car is recommended.
  • Where to stay: There are many good-value accommodation options around the Wanda commercial area and railway station. For a grassland setting, you can stay in a yurt in Jarud Banner or at the Jur River Grassland, but confirm in advance whether it has a private bathroom and air conditioning.

Travel and Clothing Tips

  • Best time to visit: June to September is ideal, with attractive grassland and forest scenery and relatively cool weather. In early October, the grasslands may turn yellow, offering autumn views.
  • What to wear: Inner Mongolia has a large day-night temperature difference, so bring a windproof jacket even in summer. For October trips, prepare a thick outdoor jacket or down jacket. When visiting the desert, bring sunglasses, a hat, and sand-proof shoe covers.
  • Sun and mosquitoes: UV levels are strong on the grasslands, so bring high-SPF sunscreen. In summer, carry mosquito repellent when visiting grasslands and forests.
  • Spending tips: Mongolian dishes are usually served in large portions, so order according to the number of diners. When buying dried beef and dairy products, choose large supermarkets or official stores in the city.
  • Road conditions: Some national highways around the grasslands and desert may have large vehicles or localized construction. Drive at a controlled speed, and ordinary sedans should stay on paved roads whenever possible to avoid undercarriage damage.
