Zhangzhi travel guide

Changzhi lies among the Taihang Mountains, offering both grand valleys and scenic mountain landscapes, as well as Song and Jin dynasty buildings and painted sculptures preserved for a thousand years. It is well suited to a relaxed-paced holiday.

  • Guanyin Hall

Ming dynasty hanging sculptures cover the ceiling, blending Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist elements. The 500 statues of deities and Buddhas are striking.

  • Tongtian Gorge

The gorge is peaceful and secluded, with ice waterfalls hanging from the cliffs and taking on a faint blue sheen in the sunlight.

  • Changzhi Museum

The modern new museum presents Shangdang history. Its Tang sancai figurines of women are vividly modeled, and it also hosts a Sanxingdui special exhibition.

  • Shangdang Gate

This former Sui dynasty administrative gate has witnessed centuries of change. Climb the tower for views of the old city and its distinctive bell-and-drum tower layout.

  • Chongqing Temple

The temple's beautifully preserved Song dynasty painted sculptures include a white elephant with lifelike glazed eyes. Its timber buildings are also worth a close look.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Urban history and local life
    • Morning: Start at Changzhi Museum (advance reservation required) to learn about Shangdang history, then walk or take a taxi to Shangdang Gate and climb the tower for views over the old city.
  • Afternoon: Head to Zhangze Lake Wetland Park for a stroll, then enjoy sunset over the lake from the City Terrace.
    • Evening: Explore Qiaobei Snack Street or Chenghuang Temple Old Street, trying local snacks such as donkey-meat shao bing and cuan soup to experience everyday city life.
  • Day 2: In-depth Taihang mountain and water tour
    • All day: Set out early for Baquan Gorge; entering before 7:30 a.m. is recommended to avoid the crowds. You can choose Route A: sightseeing bus → High Gorge Flat Lake boat ride → gorge hike → bend cable car up the mountain → Yuhuang Summit viewpoint → cliff elevator down. The route does not require backtracking and is relatively easy on the knees.
    • Evening: After returning to the city, watch the fountain at Bayi Square or try Changzi fried bing at a nearby old restaurant.
  • Day 3: Ancient architectural treasures or a relaxed finale
    • Option A (for architecture enthusiasts): Head to the Zhuozhang River Valley or Changzi County to visit Faxing Temple and Chongqing Temple, admiring Song dynasty painted sculptures and timber buildings.
  • Option B (relaxed trip): Visit Tongtian Gorge to see waterfalls and flowing streams, or buy local specialties such as Shangdang cured donkey meat and millet pastries in the city before heading home.

Changzhi's Must-Try Local Foods

  • San Jin Cha Fu

The avocado and mango ganlu is packed with ingredients, with fresh fruit, naturally creamy milk flavor and a rich, smooth texture.

  • Luzhou Banquet

A good place to sample Changzhi's local dishes. The wide selection offers a comprehensive introduction to the area's culinary flavors.

  • Xiaoyong Restaurant

The fried bing shreds have a strong wok aroma and rich flavor, with generous portions at fair prices. It is a common local halal restaurant.

  • Chenghuang Temple

Shao bing paired with cuan soup balances sour, spicy and savory flavors, making it a popular local combination.

  • Xinghua Hall

Shanxi cuisine is the specialty here. Yellow millet cold cake is pleasantly sweet and sour, the guo you rou is authentic, and you can also enjoy Shangdang bangzi opera.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

  • Where to stay: Consider staying near Bayi Square or Chenghuang Temple, where there are many hotels and guesthouses at reasonable prices (150–300 yuan per night). Food streets are within walking distance, and taxis make it easy to reach city attractions. If you plan to explore the gorges in depth, you can also stay at a farmhouse guesthouse near Baquan Gorge.
  • Getting there: You can fly to Changzhi Airport, or take a high-speed train to Changzhi East Station or Changzhi Station.
  • Getting around the city: Taxis are inexpensive; most attractions can usually be reached for around 6 yuan.
  • Getting to scenic areas: For gorge attractions such as Baquan Gorge and Tongtian Gorge, driving yourself or hiring a car is recommended for greater flexibility. Without a vehicle, you can take a direct bus from Changzhi West Bus Station.

Travel Notes

  • Temperature changes and clothing: Temperature differences between morning and evening are significant in the Taihang Mountains. Bring a light jacket year-round, and wear comfortable, non-slip sports shoes because gorge paths may be wet and slippery.
  • Book ahead: During holidays such as National Day, popular attractions including Baquan Gorge and free venues such as Changzhi Museum require advance reservations and ticket bookings through official platforms to avoid queues or visitor limits.
  • Check opening hours: Ancient buildings such as Guanyin Hall may temporarily close for conservation work. Check opening information on the official WeChat account before setting out.
  • Driving caution: The Taihang Mountains have many winding roads, so slow down and drive carefully. Without a vehicle, consider hiring a car or sharing one to reach remote historic buildings.
