Xinzhou travel guide

Xinzhou combines ancient architecture, Buddhist temples, grasslands, and canyon scenery, making it ideal for a short trip focused on history, culture, and northern Shanxi landscapes.

  • Xinzhou Ancient City

The old city brings together northern Shanxi snacks and traditional lanes. Climb the city walls for views and enjoy a traditional iron flower performance.

  • Xiurong Academy

Built along the mountains, this Qing dynasty academy offers sweeping views of Xinzhou Ancient City from its upper levels.

  • Yanmen Pass

This famous frontier pass is linked to historical stories including Wang Zhaojun’s journey beyond the frontier and the Yang family’s border defense.

  • Nanchan Temple

The temple preserves the oldest surviving wooden structure and painted sculptures, showcasing the achievements of Tang dynasty wooden architecture.

  • Foguang Temple

Called “China’s No. 1 National Treasure” by Liang Sicheng, the temple retains complete Tang dynasty wooden buildings.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 Ancient City Atmosphere: After arriving at Xinzhou West Railway Station in the morning, take a taxi to Xinzhou Ancient City. In the afternoon, walk along the city walls, visit Xiurong Academy for city views, then sample local snacks in Taishan Temple Lane. Explore the ancient city at night and watch a traditional iron flower performance (held on weekends and public holidays). Stay at a guesthouse or chain hotel near the ancient city.
  • Day 2 Frontier Passes: In the morning, take a hired car or drive to Yanmen Pass (about 1.5–2 hours). Climb through Tianxian Gate and follow the Great Wall paths to take in the frontier scenery. For lunch, try a Baizi mutton feast in Dai County, then visit Bianjing Tower and the Ashoka Pagoda in the afternoon. Return to downtown Xinzhou in the evening, or stay overnight in Wutai County.
  • Day 3 Wutai Mountain Buddhist Trail: Set out for Wutai Mountain early in the morning. First, visit Wuye Temple to pray, when there are fewer visitors, then see Xiantong Temple and Tayuan Temple, walk around the White Pagoda, and climb to Pusa Top via its 108 steps. Have lunch in Taihuai Town, trying chicken stewed with Tai mushrooms. In the afternoon, visit Dailuo Top for panoramic views, and buy Tai mushroom sauce as a souvenir before heading home.

Xinzhou’s Must-Try Local Foods

  • Tofu Meatballs

Crisp on the outside and tender inside, they soak up the broth and showcase northern Shanxi’s hearty grain-based cuisine.

  • Radish Meatballs

Springy meatballs coated in sweet-and-sour sauce with a meat filling, offering a tangy and appetizing flavor.

  • Braised Pig’s Trotter

Cooked until tender and falling off the bone, the trotters have a rich braised aroma, savory flavor, and a slightly sweet finish.

  • Dingxiang Steamed Meat

Fragrant and rich without being greasy, it is chewy when served cold and softer when served hot.

  • Grilled Pig’s Trotter

The skin is roasted until crisp, with prominent garlic and spicy flavors, while the inside stays tender.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

  • Where to stay:
    • Around Xinzhou Ancient City: To experience the old-city atmosphere, choose a guesthouse inside the city; many rooms include hot springs, and it is convenient for nighttime walks. If you value quiet, lower prices, and parking, stay at a chain hotel outside the South Gate or near Jiankang Road or Xinjian Road. The ancient city is only a few minutes away on foot.
    • Taihuai Town, Wutai Mountain: If you plan to explore Wutai Mountain in detail, stay in Taihuai Town for easier morning visits to the temples. Prices are about 200–400 yuan.
    • Luyashan / Wuzhai County: When visiting Luyashan and Heye Plateau, consider staying in Wuzhai County, which has more chain hotels and saves time when traveling to Heye Plateau.
  • Transportation:
    • Getting there: Take a high-speed train to Xinzhou West Railway Station; the journey from Taiyuan South Railway Station takes about 30–40 minutes. When driving to the scenic areas, simply follow your navigation app.
    • Around the city and between scenic areas: The streets of Xinzhou Ancient City are mostly paved with stone, making them suitable for walking; electric mobility scooters are also available for rent. Yanmen Pass, Luyashan, and Wutai Mountain are far apart, so driving or hiring a car is recommended (about 150 yuan per person per day). Public transportation is relatively inconvenient.

Practical Tips and Things to Watch For

  • The ancient city is free: Xinzhou Ancient City, its walls, Xiurong Academy, and Guandi Temple are all free to enter. There is no need to buy a so-called “ancient city pass”; simply enter through the South Gate.
  • Iron flower performance times: The traditional iron flower show is not held every day. It is usually scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays from 20:00 to 20:30. Check the schedule posted on the ancient city’s official WeChat account before setting out.
  • Wutai Mountain reservations: Tickets for Wutai Mountain must be reserved in advance through the “Wutai Mountain Tourist Service Center” WeChat account, and slots are limited during peak season. Whether to buy incense at the scenic area is up to you, and be cautious of fortune-telling and sales pitches along the roadside.
  • Temperature changes and clothing: Northern Shanxi has a noticeable day–night temperature difference. Luyashan and Heye Plateau are at higher elevations and feel colder, so bring a windbreaker or light jacket. The ancient city has many uneven blue-stone paths, so comfortable flat shoes are recommended.
  • Keeping warm at the Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Cave: Temperatures inside Luyashan’s Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Cave are below freezing. Even when it is hot outside in summer, the cave remains cold. The scenic area provides winter clothing, but bringing your own warm layers is still recommended. A visit takes about one hour.
