Yingkou has strong sea breezes and noticeable temperature changes between day and night in autumn, so bring a windproof jacket.
History and Nature in the City
- Liaohe Old Street: Once one of Northeast China's earliest trading ports, this neighborhood stretches about 1.3 kilometers and preserves 31 historic buildings blending Chinese and Western styles. It is known as an "open-air museum of a century-old trading port in northern China." Admission is free at all hours. Arrive in the early evening to see the old buildings before enjoying the nighttime lighting.
- West Fort Ruins: This Qing dynasty coastal defense site is free to visit. Climb the fort for views of the Liaohe River estuary and the sea. Snack and coffee trucks line the nearby waterfront, and early evening is a good time to watch the sunset.
- Niaolang Square: October is the best month to visit. At low tide, you can see migratory birds flying over the natural red beach. Admission and parking are free. Check the tide table before setting out and plan to arrive within one to two hours before or after low tide.
- Yingkou Museum: Admission is free, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Its two floors of galleries cover Yingkou's ancient and modern history. Allow about an hour for a full visit, which provides a useful overview of the city's development.
Bayuquan Coast and Hot Springs
- Shanhai Square: A major waterfront landmark in Bayuquan, with several kilometers of sandy beach. Visit the Bohai Pearl Viewing Platform for sea views, or bring a small bucket to collect crabs along the shore at low tide. At night, enjoy the coastal lights and fireworks.
- Liaoning Tuanshan National Marine Park: The park features rocks formed 1.8 billion years ago and shaped by prolonged wave erosion, along with a glass walkway over the sea and sea caves. Enter after 3 p.m. and spend time by the shore while waiting for sunset over the water.
- Bayuwan Magic Hot Springs: Known for private hot spring baths overlooking the sea. An early evening soak comes with sunset views over the water, making this a relaxing stop in autumn and winter.

Accommodation and Transport

- Accommodation: For sea views and hot springs, choose a guesthouse or seafront hotel near Shanhai Square in Bayuquan. For exploring the old street and local food, Zhanqian District or Xishi District in central Yingkou is more convenient, with affordable accommodation.
Autumn Travel Tips
- Tides and Weather: Check tide times before birdwatching at Niaolang Square or exploring the shore, as the relevant sights are visible at low tide. Coastal winds are strong in October, and temperatures can drop quickly, so bring a thick, warm, windproof jacket.
- Buying Seafood: Choose established markets with clearly displayed prices, such as Bohai Seafood Wholesale Market. You can take your purchases to a nearby restaurant for cooking; confirm the cooking fee beforehand to avoid disputes over charges or seafood being swapped.
- Protecting Nature: Stay off the mudflats when watching migratory birds at Niaolang Square, as areas of deep mud are dangerous. Do not chase or feed the birds.
