Fushun in Liaoning Province combines early Qing historical sites with industrial landscapes. It is where Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, rose to power, home to Asia’s largest open-pit mine, and the birthplace of malaban, a spicy mixed dish now found across China. Local prices are relatively low, and most attractions offer free admission, making it a good choice for a short trip.
- Lei Feng Memorial Hall: One of China’s first designated classic revolutionary tourism sites. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
- Hetu Ala City: The birthplace of Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, and the first capital of the Later Jin state. Admission costs around RMB 60. Hiring a guide can help you understand the history.
- Former Fushun War Criminals Management Center: Puyi, China’s last emperor, underwent rehabilitation here. It is now a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Admission is free with a reservation.
- West Open-Pit Mine (Donggang Viewing Platform): Look out over Asia’s largest man-made open-pit mine from this viewing platform. Admission is free, and clear weather offers better views into the distance.
- Sarhu Scenic Area: Covering 80 square kilometers, this area combines mountain and waterside scenery with remnants of Nurhaci’s historic battlefield. Explore by car or take a shuttle bus.
- Sankuaishi National Forest Park: Known as the “Roof of Eastern Liaoning,” this densely forested park reaches an elevation of 1,131 meters. It is suitable for hiking and offers a summer escape from the heat.
- Honghe Canyon Rafting: This 13-kilometer rafting route follows rapids through a volcanic rock canyon. Known as “Northeast China’s No. 1 Rafting Experience,” it operates during the peak season from June to September.
- Dahuofang Reservoir: The reservoir has high-quality water, with surrounding mountains reflected on its surface. After sightseeing, try a fish feast at a nearby restaurant featuring fish from the reservoir.
Suggested Itineraries
- One day (city highlights): Take a morning high-speed train from Shenyang to Fushun Railway Station, a journey of about 20 minutes. Walk or take a taxi to the Fushun War Criminals Management Center and allow about an hour for your visit → For lunch, try local malaban at Shihua Market or near a school → Visit the Lei Feng Memorial Hall in the afternoon to learn about China’s revolutionary heritage → Watch the sunset over Asia’s largest mine pit from Donggang Viewing Platform → Have skewers for dinner on Hun River South Bank Barbecue Street, then return by high-speed train.
- Two days (a deeper look):
- Day 1: Visit the Lei Feng Memorial Hall in the morning, then head to Sarhu Scenic Area in the afternoon for autumn views of Dahuofang Reservoir. Return to the city for malaban and grilled skewers in the evening.
- Day 2: Drive or hire a car to Xinbin County. Learn about Manchu culture at Hetu Ala City in the morning, try the Manchu Eight Bowls feast for lunch, and visit Qing Yongling Tombs in the afternoon before heading back.
Local Food Suggestions
Fushun’s food combines traditional Manchu cooking with northeastern Chinese flavors. Portions are generous and prices are generally affordable.

Wushi Zhong Small Meat Skewers
Known for tender, juicy beef skewers and tangy, sweet malaban. Its fried skewers are also popular locally.
-
Pangyi Qingyuan Mixed Stir-Fry
A northeastern Chinese mix of ingredients stir-fried on a griddle, with a rich sauce and sweet-and-sour flavors that go well with rice.
-
Matsuzakaya
The Black Brick coffee slush comes with a scoop of ice cream. Refreshing and one of the shop’s more affordable choices.
-
Dajiang Malaban
The malaban leans sweet and sour, with balls coated in a thick sauce and topped with crushed peanuts. A local favorite.
-
Spicy Mama
Fish head with chopped chilies and steamed pork ribs with glutinous rice offer Hunan flavors, with appetizing sour heat and rich sauces.
Transport and Accommodation Tips
- Transport: Trains from Shenyang North Railway Station to Fushun Railway Station take 20–30 minutes, with plenty of departures. Direct high-speed trains from Beijing and some other cities take around 3 hours. City attractions are spread out, so driving or taking taxis is more convenient. Nearby areas such as Xinbin and Qingyuan counties are best explored by car; visiting them is not recommended if you are not driving.
- Accommodation: Prioritize the areas around Fushun Railway Station and Wanda Plaza for convenient transport and dining. If you plan to soak in hot springs in winter, consider a hot spring hotel on the outskirts of the city.
Travel Tips
- Book ahead: Revolutionary heritage attractions such as the Lei Feng Memorial Hall and the War Criminals Management Center require advance reservations through official channels. They are usually closed on Mondays, so check opening dates when planning your itinerary.
- Viewing safety: Parts of Donggang Viewing Platform (West Open-Pit Mine) may close because of weather or construction. If you approach along a small path, watch your footing and keep away from cliff edges.
- Clothing and gear: Wear comfortable flat shoes when visiting forested mountain areas such as Sankuaishi and Sarhu. Bring insect repellent in summer and dress warmly for outdoor activities in winter.
- Ordering malaban: Local malaban combines sour, sweet and spicy flavors. If you have a low tolerance for chili, ask for “mild” or “no chili” when ordering.
