Huangnan has a large temperature difference between day and night, so it is a good idea to bring a jacket even in summer.
Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is in Qinghai and is quieter than the Qinghai Lake area. Highlights include Danxia landforms, the colors of the Yellow River, and Regong intangible cultural heritage such as thangka painting. Most places are around 2,000 meters above sea level, so the travel pace can be fairly relaxed. It is usually suitable for a 3–4 day short in-depth trip.
Natural Wonders
- Kanbula World Geopark: Red Danxia cliffs contrast beautifully with the emerald waters of the Yellow River reservoir. You can take a boat into the clusters of Danxia peaks, or hike to Aqiong Nanzong Monastery on the cliffside. The scenery has striking layers and depth.
- Lijiaxia Hydropower Station Viewing Platform: Located on the main stream of the Yellow River in Jianzha County, this dam is 155 meters high. The reservoir area is broad and calm, making it good for photographing large-scale scenery where “dams connect with dams and lakes connect with lakes.” Viewing from the surrounding area is free.
Culture and Intangible Heritage
- Longwu Monastery: This Gelug school Tibetan Buddhist monastery has a history of 700 years. Its red walls and golden roofs create a vivid visual impression. You can walk along the kora path and feel the atmosphere of faith inside the monastery. Prayer wheels should be turned clockwise.
- Regong Art Museum: The museum is free to enter and has a focused display of intangible heritage skills such as thangka painting, appliqué embroidery, and sculpture. It offers a fairly systematic look at the colors, craftsmanship, and inheritance of Regong art.
- Wutun Thangka Village: This is an important area for Regong art. Artists hand-paint thangkas using mineral pigments and real gold powder, and even a small thangka often takes several months to complete. Visitors can also take part in painting experiences.
Authentic Old Villages
- Guomari Ancient Fort: This rammed-earth fortress has a history of 600 years. Its inner lanes twist like a maze, and it remains very lightly commercialized, making it a good place to observe the structure of the old fort and local village life.
- Nianduhu Village: The village has many thangka studios, where you can see artisans hand-painting thangkas up close and learn how this intangible heritage continues in everyday life. The light is especially layered around sunset.
Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Xining → Longwu Monastery → Regong Art Museum → Longwu Old Street
Drive from Xining to Tongren City in about 2.5 hours. In the morning, visit Longwu Monastery and experience the solemn atmosphere of a Tibetan Buddhist temple. In the afternoon, go to the Regong Art Museum to see thangkas and related craft displays. In the evening, stroll around the night market on Longwu Old Street, try hand-grabbed yak meat and butter tea, and get a feel for local daily life.
- Day 2: Tongren → Kanbula Geopark → Jianzha County
Drive to Kanbula, about 1.5 hours away. After entering the scenic area, take a sightseeing bus to overlook the Danxia panorama, then take a boat tour of Lijiaxia Reservoir for a close look at the cliffs and Nanzong Valley. In the afternoon, head to Jianzha County and wait for sunset by the Yellow River. Dinner can be a Yellow River rainbow trout feast.
- Day 3: Jianzha → Guomari Ancient Fort → Nianduhu Village → Return to Xining
In the morning, visit Guomari Ancient Fort and walk through its rammed-earth lanes. In the afternoon, go to Nianduhu Village to watch thangka painters at work. You can have a Tibetan meal at noon, then return to Xining along the “Clear Yellow River No. 1 Scenic Avenue.”
Recommended Huangnan Local Foods
- Hand-Grabbed Yak Meat: Usually made with free-range Tibetan sheep or yak from the plateau, simmered slowly in plain water. The meat is firm, tender, and not too gamey, and it is a common main dish for hosting guests locally.
- Yellow River Rainbow Trout: Rainbow trout grow in the clear waters of the Yellow River. The meat is tender with few bones, and a trout feast is one of the representative local flavors of Jianzha County.
- Yak Yogurt: Made by fermenting fresh yak milk using traditional methods. It often has a golden milk skin on the surface, with a thick texture close to cheese, a clean sour taste, and a sweet aftertaste.
- Tibetan Blood Sausage: Made by mixing sheep’s blood, mutton, and tsampa flour, then stuffing the mixture into a casing and boiling it. It is soft, tender, and aromatic without being too greasy, and is a common specialty food in Tibetan areas.
- Tsampa: Roasted highland barley is ground into flour, then often mixed with butter tea and shaped by hand before eating. It is a simple, filling staple food in Tibetan areas.
Accommodation and Transport Guide
- Where to Stay: It is best to stay in Longwu Town, Tongren, where transport, dining, and daily supplies are convenient. If your budget allows, you can choose a Tibetan-style themed hotel. If you value good cost performance, choose a clean Tibetan-style guesthouse. If you plan to explore Kanbula in more depth, you can stay near the scenic area at Kanbula International Hotel, which has better facilities and also makes it easier to enter the scenic area early the next day.
- Transport: Self-driving is the most suitable option. The overall road conditions from Xining to Huangnan are good, and the scenery along the way is varied. Huangnan’s sights are also fairly spread out, so driving makes it easier to manage your time. If you do not drive, you can first take a long-distance bus to Tongren County or Jianzha County, then hire a car or take taxis locally to reach the attractions.
Travel Tips and Things to Note
- Sun Protection and Warm Clothing: UV rays are strong on the plateau, so prepare sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Huangnan has a noticeable day-night temperature difference, so even in summer you should bring a fleece or light down jacket.
- Respect Local Customs: After entering a temple, walk clockwise. Do not casually photograph monks or villagers, do not point at Buddha statues with your finger, and follow Tibetan religious customs.
- Altitude Adjustment and Mobile Signal: Most of Huangnan is around 2,000 meters above sea level, so altitude sickness is generally not very common. However, it is still best to avoid washing your hair, bathing, and strenuous exercise on the first night. Mobile signal can be weak on some mountain roads, so download offline maps in advance.
- Buying Thangkas: Do not easily trust low-priced “thangkas” sold at scenic-area entrances. Real thangkas usually use mineral pigments and real gold powder, and prices often start from several thousand yuan. Many tourist souvenirs are printed products, so check carefully before buying.
