Yushu sits at a high elevation, with a large temperature difference between day and night, so keep warm and protect yourself from the sun.
Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is in the southwest of Qinghai Province. It is the source region of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers, and is often called the “Water Tower of China.” It combines vast plateau ecology with deep Kham Tibetan culture and a strong religious atmosphere, making it a relatively quiet destination on northwestern routes and well suited to slow travel.
- Xinzhai Jiana Mani Stone Scripture City: This is believed to be the world’s largest mani stone pile, built up from 2.5 billion mani stones carved with scriptures and stretching for about 3 kilometers. In the evening, the light brings out the layers of the stone piles clearly. Visitors should walk around it clockwise.
- Jiegu Monastery: Jiegu Monastery is the main Sakya monastery in the Kham region. Its buildings spread along the mountain slope, with striking golden roofs and red walls. You can drive up to the viewing platform for a bird’s-eye view of Yushu’s urban area and the course of the Batang River, making it a good place for panoramic city photos.
- Princess Wencheng Temple: This Tang-dynasty grotto site stands along the ancient Tang-Tubo Road. A newly built memorial hall next to it presents the history of Princess Wencheng’s journey to Tibet through thangka-style displays. Many devotees come here to worship, giving the site a strong cultural atmosphere.
- Longbao Beach Nature Reserve: This is an important habitat for black-necked cranes, with wide views of plateau wetlands and meadows. In spring and summer, you can see many rare bird species. It is suitable for birdwatching and light hiking, but you need to contact the scenic area in advance to register before visiting.
- Sanjiangyuan Monument: This marks an important boundary in the source region of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers, and is a representative place for understanding the geography of Sanjiangyuan. The surrounding wetlands have wooden boardwalks where you can walk and observe waterbirds, with a chance of seeing Tibetan wild donkeys.
- Ga’er Monastery (in Nangqian County): The monastery is built on a cliff more than 100 meters high and, from a distance, looks as if it is embedded in the rock wall. From the front of the monastery, you can look down over the canyon. The surroundings are quiet, and the sounds of wind and prayer flags are especially clear.
Classic 4-Day, 3-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrival and Altitude Adjustment
After arriving in Yushu City (Jiegu Town), check in to an oxygen-supplied hotel and rest. In the afternoon, you can take a walk around King Gesar Square for a first taste of Kham culture. At dusk, go to the Dangdai Mountain viewing platform to enjoy the sunset over this small snowy-region city. In the evening, you can watch local Tibetans perform the Guozhuang dance in the square.
- Day 2: Faith and Cultural Visits
In the morning, visit Xinzhai Jiana Mani Stone Scripture City to experience up close the scale of the 2.5 billion mani stones, and follow the devotees in a kora according to local custom. In the afternoon, visit Jiegu Monastery and photograph its golden roofs, red walls, and views over all of Yushu. If time allows, continue to the Yushu Earthquake Relief Memorial Hall to learn about post-disaster reconstruction and the resilience of life here.
- Day 3: The Ancient Tang-Tubo Road and Historic Sites
Travel by chartered car or self-drive to Princess Wencheng Temple to visit the thousand-year-old Tang-dynasty grottoes. Along the way, you can enjoy the rock paintings and cliff carvings of Leba Valley, where streams, prayer flags, and mountain-valley scenery complement one another. In the afternoon, stop by the Tongtian River Sutra-Drying Platform to watch the river flow eastward.
- Day 4: Ecological Wetlands and Hidden Natural Scenery
Head to Longbao Beach Nature Reserve or the Sanjiangyuan Monument, and walk through the plateau wetlands to experience the clean, open natural environment. In the afternoon, return according to your flight or driving schedule. If you have more time, you can continue south to Nangqian County to explore quieter plateau areas.
Transport and Accommodation Guide
- Getting There: The more convenient option is to fly directly from Xining to Yushu Batang Airport, with a flight time of about 1.5 hours. If driving, you can follow National Highway G214; the full journey takes about 12 hours, with many bends on mountain roads, so drive carefully.
- Local Transport: Yushu’s attractions are spread out, and public transport coverage is limited, so chartered cars or shared rides are recommended. The starting fare for taxis in the city is about 8–10 yuan, and a trip to Jiegu Monastery costs about 30 yuan. If you plan to enter the core area of Sanjiangyuan or go to Nangqian County, arrange a guide or chartered car in advance.
- Accommodation Recommendation: It is best to stay throughout your trip in an oxygen-supplied hotel in Yushu City (Jiegu Town), such as Yushu Lanmei International Hotel. Diffused oxygen supply can help ease altitude sickness. Guesthouses in county towns and townships often do not have oxygen supply, so overnight stays there are not recommended.
Must-Try Foods and Local Specialties
- Yak Beef Soup Hot Pot: Plateau yak beef has a firm texture, and the broth is rich and savory, making it especially suitable in colder weather.
- Roasted Ribs: This is a Tibetan-style dish of roasted yak ribs, with a charred, fragrant outside, tender meat inside, and a strong aroma.
- Yak Yogurt: Made by fermenting yak milk, it often has a golden layer of butter on the surface. It is thick, sweet, and tart, and can be eaten with a little sugar or tsampa.
- Tibetan Buns: These have a relatively thin wrapper and generous filling. When you bite into one, savory juices come out, and the flavor is even stronger with chili sauce.
- Highland Barley Cake: Made by baking highland barley flour, it has a dense texture and a light grain aroma, making it a good simple meal on the road.
Altitude Sickness Prevention and Important Notes
- Altitude Sickness Prevention: Yushu City is about 3,600–3,700 meters above sea level, and the prefecture’s average elevation is over 4,200 meters. You can start taking rhodiola one week in advance. On the first day after arrival, it is recommended that you do not shower, wash your hair, run or jump, or drink alcohol. Carry an oxygen canister, glucose, and ibuprofen to deal with discomfort from lack of oxygen and altitude-related headaches.
- What to Wear: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau can reach 20°C. Even in summer, bring a hardshell jacket or a light down jacket. Dress in layers, and prepare SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and lip balm. UV rays are strong on the plateau, so protection is essential.
- Taboos in Tibetan Areas: When entering monasteries, mani stone piles, and kora paths, walk clockwise and do not go against the direction. Photography is usually prohibited inside temple halls. Ask for permission before photographing local residents or monks. Do not step on prayer flags or mani stones, and do not damage grassland vegetation.
- Self-Driving and Aerial Photography: Management is strict in the core area of Sanjiangyuan National Park. Do not enter without an access permit, or you may be fined and turned back. Drone aerial photography is prohibited throughout the reserve, so follow the relevant rules.
- Prices and Supplies: Many supplies in Yushu depend on transport from outside, so overall prices are slightly higher. Distances between county towns are long, so fill up whenever you see a gas station. Mountain areas often have no signal, so be sure to download offline maps before setting out.
