Lvliang travel guide

Shanxi’s Lüliang has a large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, so bring a jacket when traveling.

  • Qikou Ancient Town: Known as “the first town on the winding Yellow River,” it was once a dock for Shanxi merchants during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town is free to enter, and its five-li-long old street, paved with bluestone, still retains its everyday atmosphere, with local residents living there today.
  • Lijiashan Village: About 3 km from Qikou Ancient Town, it was described by Wu Guanzhong as “the Potala Palace on the Loess Plateau.” Built along a 70-degree slope, the village’s cave dwellings are stacked one above another, making it ideal for people-focused photography.
  • Beiwudang Mountain: A famous Taoist mountain in northern China, known for its granite peaks, ancient pines, unusual rocks and sea of clouds. Entrance tickets cost 72 yuan in peak season. Walk up the 1,600-step stairway to Xianglu Peak for views over the ravines and gullies of the Loess Plateau.
  • Fenjiu Culture Scenic Area: Located in Xinghua Village, the gardens and exterior grounds are free to enter, while the Fenjiu Museum costs about 42 yuan. Visitors can tour traditional brewing workshops and sample 62° unaged liquor for free, making it a good place to learn about liquor culture.
  • Pangquangou: A national nature reserve where forests, valleys and alpine meadows intertwine, making it suitable for escaping the summer heat and hiking through the woods. Cattle and sheep foraging in the wild are often visible along the way, and those driving can stop to explore whenever they like.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Yellow River Ancient Town and Cave-Dwelling Scenery
    • Morning: Travel from downtown Lüliang to Qikou Ancient Town, a drive of about 1.5 hours. Explore the Ming- and Qing-era old street and learn about the traces of history left by the Shanxi merchants’ dock.
    • Afternoon: Head to Lijiashan Village. Photograph the full view of the cave-dwelling clusters from the lookout at the village entrance and look for a similar angle to the one in Wu Guanzhong’s 27-million-yuan painting.
    • Dusk: Climb to Heilong Temple at a high point in the ancient town to watch the sunset over the Yellow River’s S-shaped bend and the town.
    • Evening: Stay in a cave-dwelling guesthouse in the ancient town and rest to the sound of the Yellow River. For dinner, try Linxian stew and yougao fried rice cakes.
  • Day 2: Mountain Scenery and Taoist Sites
    • Morning: Go to Beiwudang Mountain. Take a sightseeing bus to the transfer station, then begin hiking, viewing natural rock formations such as the Tortoise-and-Snake Fight and Flying Stone along the way.
    • Noon: Eat at a farmhouse restaurant in the scenic area and try local dishes such as chaoted.
    • Afternoon: Visit Zhenwu Hall and Yuxu Palace, then climb Xianglu Peak to see the sea of clouds and unusual pines before returning to downtown Lüliang to rest.
  • Day 3: Liquor Culture and a City Walk
    • Morning: Visit the Fenjiu Culture Scenic Area, tour the Fenjiu Museum and brewing workshops, and learn about traditional liquor tasting.
    • Noon: Enjoy a specialty Fenjiu banquet in the scenic area.
    • Afternoon: Return to downtown Lüliang. You can visit the Lüliang Museum (free, reservation required, closed Mondays) to see epic Han-dynasty stone carvings, or take a walk around Century Square before heading home.

Lüliang’s Must-Try Local Foods

  • Liulin Wantu: A springy, chewy intangible cultural heritage snack made from buckwheat. Served with chili oil, vinegar sauce and minced garlic, it is tangy, spicy and appetizing; it can also be served cold or stir-fried.
  • Lanxian Potato Feast: Potatoes are used to make hundreds of dishes, including helengzi, chaoted and crystal dumplings. The texture is dense yet springy, highlighting the potatoes’ own fragrance.
  • Zhongyang Cypress-Seed Mutton: Goats feed on cypress seeds and leaves and drink mountain spring water, producing tender meat with little gamey odor and a faint cypress fragrance. It is delicious salted and pan-fried or gently stewed, and is especially suitable for autumn and winter.
  • Xingxian Maotang Soup: Mutton soup with handmade vermicelli and dumplings, topped with scallions and cilantro and seasoned with pepper and aged vinegar. Sour, spicy and warming, it is ideal for cold weather.
  • Xiaoyi Huoshao: Freshly baked flatbreads with crisp, fragrant exteriors and soft interiors. They come with either a sweet brown-sugar molten filling or savory scallion, Sichuan pepper and salt, and mutton fillings. Each costs 2–5 yuan and tastes best hot.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

  • Transportation: Lüliang’s attractions are spread out, so driving yourself or hiring a car makes planning easier. By high-speed rail, get off at Lüliang Station or Fenyang Station, then transfer to a bus or shared ride to the scenic areas. Public transportation to places such as Beiwudang Mountain and Lijiashan Village is limited, so arrange a shared ride in advance.
  • Accommodation:
    • Qikou Ancient Town: Cave-dwelling guesthouses cost about 200–300 yuan per night, making it convenient to enjoy Yellow River sunsets and the night sky; overall facilities are relatively basic.
  • Downtown Lüliang (Lishi District): There are many hotels, with more complete facilities and prices of about 100–300 yuan per night. This suits travelers who value comfort and convenient dining.

Practical Tips

  • Best seasons: See mountain flowers in April and May, and enjoy autumn colors in September and October, when the weather is relatively comfortable. Winters are cold and often windy, so plan trips carefully.
  • What to wear: The Loess Plateau has marked day-night temperature swings, so even in autumn it is advisable to bring a light jacket or windbreaker. Ancient towns and mountain villages have many stone paths and steep slopes, so wear nonslip flat shoes and avoid high heels.
  • Sun protection and moisturization: Local UV levels are strong and the air is dry, so bring sunscreen, a hat and lip balm.
  • Itinerary tips:
    • Some courtyards in Qikou Ancient Town charge admission; check the signs before entering. The free areas are sufficient for sightseeing, and you can bargain moderately when buying goods.
    • The mountain paths at Beiwudang Mountain are steep, and a round-trip hike takes about 3–4 hours, which can put considerable strain on the knees. Older adults and children can take the cable car or plan according to their fitness.
    • Hollow mooncakes sold in the ancient town are mediocre. For Fenjiu and other souvenirs, shop at reputable supermarkets or official stores; be cautious with roadside products labeled “old Fenjiu” in the scenic areas.
    • The Lüliang Museum is closed on Mondays, so avoid that day when planning your itinerary.
