Practical Transportation and Travel Tips
- Transportation: Dingxi’s attractions are spread out, and places such as Zhang County, Min County, and Weiyuan are all some distance from the city. Self-driving or hiring a car is recommended. A hired car costs about 400–600 yuan per day. If taking the high-speed rail, you can first arrive at Dingxi North Railway Station, then rent a car locally or share a ride.
- What to wear: Dingxi has a noticeable temperature difference between day and night, especially in the mountains and grasslands. Even in summer, it is recommended to bring a hardshell jacket or a light jacket. The local UV rays are strong, so use sun protection and wear comfortable, non-slip hiking shoes.
- Altitude sickness note: The city and most scenic areas are around 2,000 meters above sea level, so severe altitude sickness is usually unlikely. If you go to more demanding hiking routes such as Lugu Mountain (3,941 meters above sea level), prepare altitude-sickness medication in advance, control your pace, and bring an oxygen canister.
- Shopping tip: When buying Chinese medicinal herbs such as angelica and astragalus, or potato products, it is best to choose local farmers’ markets or regular supermarkets. Do not easily trust roadside vendors who use claims such as “wild” or “first harvest” to push high-priced goods.
