Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture is known as “China’s Little Mecca.” It preserves deep Hui Muslim cultural traditions and also has natural landscapes such as Yellow River canyons and alpine meadows, making it well suited to a northwestern China trip that combines culture with scenery.

Urban Culture and Local Atmosphere

  • Bafang Shisanxiang: This area preserves a relatively complete traditional Hui street-and-alley layout. Its blue-brick buildings and woodcarved decorations have strong local character. After the lights come on at night, the neighborhood is especially good for a slow walk and for taking in the atmosphere of local life.
  • Linxia Prefecture Museum: The museum’s key exhibits include painted pottery from the Majiayao culture. Patterns such as spirals and frogs show pottery-making skills from 5,000 years ago. The museum is free to enter, and you need to bring your ID card when visiting.
  • Donggongguan Mansion: This Republican-era residence is known for its brick carvings. The courtyard preserves 189 brick-carving works, and even the sewer covers feature peony patterns. It is an important place to learn about Hezhou brick-carving art. Admission is 20 yuan.

Yellow River Canyon Scenery

  • Bingling Temple Grottoes: Located within the Yellow River canyon, these grottoes are a World Cultural Heritage site. They were first built during the Western Qin period and preserve grotto art from the Northern Wei through the Ming dynasty. You can take a speedboat from Donggan Wharf to get there, passing Danxia landforms along the way and enjoying the canyon scenery of the Three Gorges of the Yellow River.
  • Yellow River–Tao River Confluence Viewing Platform: The Yellow River and Tao River meet here, and the two differently colored rivers form a clear boundary, creating a striking contrast between greenish and yellow waters. The viewing platform has a transparent glass floor, allowing you to look down over the confluence.
  • Liujiaxia Bridge and Benchi Valley Viewing Platform: Benchi Valley is a good place to view the overall landscape of Liujiaxia Reservoir and Liujiaxia Bridge. From the viewing platform, you can see both the broad reservoir surface and the full view of the bridge.

Natural and Ecological Hidden Spots

  • Erziwa Liang: Often called “Linxia’s Little Altay,” this area has gentle slopes, broad ridgelines, and distant views of the snowcapped Taizi Mountains. It is suitable for camping and watching the sunset, and its meadow scenery is attractive in different kinds of weather.
  • Hezheng Paleozoological Fossil Museum: The museum brings together a large number of major ancient animal fossils dating back more than 10 million years. Its immersive exhibition halls help visitors understand the prehistoric ecology and geological evolution of the Linxia Basin, and it is also suitable for family visits with children.

Linxia’s food combines halal flavors with the noodle traditions of northwestern China. The following local specialties are worth including in your trip.

  • Dongxiang Hand-Grasped Lamb: Usually made with lamb ribs, it is boiled in plain water and eaten with garlic vinegar. The meat is tender and the flavor is clean and refreshing, making it a common dish for welcoming guests locally.
  • Fazi and Mianchang: Fazi is made by steaming a meat filling and has a fine, dense texture. Mianchang is made by stuffing flour-based dough into casings, giving it a chewy texture. After being sliced, they are served with chili oil and garlic paste, with a pronounced aroma and spiciness.
  • Hezhou Old Yogurt: This yogurt has a rich milk flavor and a thick layer of milk skin on the surface. Its overall taste is full and mellow, making it a good dessert after a meal.
  • Beef Offal Stew: Beef tripe, beef head meat, tendons, and other ingredients are slowly stewed in a seasoned stock until soft and tender, with a rich, full-bodied broth. It is usually eaten with crisp mahua twists and is a common local breakfast choice.
