Jinchang has a dry climate and a large temperature difference between day and night, so it is worth bringing a light jacket even in summer.
Jinchang is a small northwestern city well suited to a short stopover. You can see red Gobi landscapes that look almost like the surface of Mars, as well as purple flower fields and Silk Road remains. Overall costs are not high, tourist crowds are relatively light, and about 3 days allows for a relaxed visit.
- Jinchang Mars Base 1: Set amid red Gobi landforms, this site has a strong alien-wilderness feel. Visitors can put on spacesuits and take photos beside a Mars rover, and also try space capsule survival experiences. At dusk, the Gobi sunset is ideal for capturing the vast, lonely scenery of northwest China.
- Jinchang Zijin Flower Sea: The best time to visit is from June to August, when more than 700 mu of verbena and lavender bloom across the Gobi, forming a purple flower field reminiscent of Provence. The scenic area is free to enter, and its white windmills and small flower-field train are the main photo features.
- Jinchang Jinchuan National Mine Park: This park has Asia’s largest man-made open-pit nickel mine. From the Jinchang Peacock Peak viewing platform, you can look down over the layered, winding mine roads. The overall scene has a striking industrial character, making it a good choice for travelers who like mines, machinery, and rugged visuals.
- Jinchang Liqian Ancient City: This site is associated with the legend of the “lost ancient Roman legion,” and the city contains structures such as a Roman-style amphitheater replica. Around sunset, the light is soft, and the Roman-style buildings contrast beautifully with the northwestern sky. It is a good place to learn about the legend and take photos with an exotic atmosphere.
- Jinchang Jinshui Lake: Jinshui Lake is known as the “blue sapphire” of the Gobi and is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in northwest China. In the evening, you can walk along the lake and watch the sunset, with reed beds, the water surface, and Danxia reflections forming an open waterfront landscape.
- Jinchang Yushan Gorge Shengrong Temple: This Silk Road Buddhist site was first built in 561 AD, and the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang once taught scriptures here. The remains of seven Tang pagodas stand near the ruins of the Han and Ming Great Walls, making it suitable for travelers interested in cultural history and the atmosphere of ancient sites.
Relaxed 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1 Healing City Walk: In the morning, visit Jinchuan National Mine Park and look down over the mine pit and mine roads from the viewing area to get a sense of Jinchang’s industrial roots. At noon, try the local time-honored lamb with noodle rolls. In the afternoon, visit Zijin Flower Sea to enjoy the purple flower fields (June to August). In the evening, watch the sunset at Jinshui Lake, then go to Beijing Road Night Market for barbecue.
- Day 2 Alien Sci-Fi and Silk Road Exploration: Drive yourself or hire a car to Mars Base 1. Put on a spacesuit for interstellar-themed photos and try the space capsule experience. At noon, eat local farmhouse dishes near the base. In the afternoon, head to Liqian Ancient City and wait for sunset beside the Roman-style buildings. Return to the city in the evening to rest.
- Day 3 Cultural Sites and Natural Scenery: In the morning, visit Yushan Gorge Shengrong Temple and get a close look at the remains of the Han and Ming Great Walls while learning about Silk Road history. In the afternoon, walk around Yongchang Bell and Drum Tower and Beihaizi Park to experience everyday leisure spaces used by locals. In the evening, return home with souvenirs.
Must-Try Northwestern Specialties
- Jinchang Lamb with Noodle Rolls: This is Jinchang’s signature dish, made with lamb nourished by Qilian snowmelt and paired with chewy noodle rolls. After absorbing the lamb broth, the rolls become savory and fragrant, without a strong gamey taste. For around twenty to thirty yuan per person, you can eat very well.
- Jinchang Qinghe Boiled Chicken: Qinghe boiled chicken is a well-known local dish that has appeared on CCTV. The chicken is tender and the flavor is rich, giving it a strong identity within Jinchang’s food scene.
- Jinchang Stir-Fried Bola: Stir-fried bola mainly features lamb offal cooked on an iron griddle, with onions and chili peppers. It is hot, fragrant, and one of the late-night snacks often eaten by Jinchang locals.
- Jinchang Hexuan Malatang: Hexuan malatang is a basin-style malatang familiar to many Jinchang residents. It combines a spicy paste with rich chili oil, creating a thick soup base suited to those who enjoy bold, heavy flavors.
- Jinchang Yongchang Baked Flatbread: Yongchang baked flatbread is an intangible cultural heritage snack, with the aroma of rose and aromatic beans. The outside is toasted and fragrant, while the inside is soft. It tastes even better after reheating and also works well as a souvenir.
- Jinchang Sweet Fermented Grains: Sweet fermented grains are made by fermenting highland barley. They taste refreshing and can help cut through greasy food. Locals also make them into sweet fermented grain milk tea, which is especially cooling in summer.
Accommodation and Transport Tips
- Where to Stay: It is recommended to stay in the urban area around Jinchang Beijing Road Travel Guide or Jinchang Guofang Plaza, where dining and taxis are convenient. Budget chain hotels cost just over 100 yuan and offer good value. If you visit the flower sea in summer, you can also choose a starry-sky tent guesthouse near the flower fields.
- Getting Around: Jinchang’s attractions are fairly spread out. Taxi fares in the city start at around 5 yuan. For farther places such as Mars Base 1 and Liqian Ancient City, self-driving or hiring a car is recommended. Roads in northwest China are generally in good condition, so self-driving is not too stressful even for beginners.
Travel Notes
- Sun Protection and Temperature Differences: The ultraviolet rays in northwest China are strong, so sunglasses, sunscreen, and moisturizing spray are recommended. The temperature difference between day and night is obvious, so even in summer you should bring a windproof light jacket.
- Flower Season Limits: The best time to view Zijin Flower Sea is June to August. After September, the flowering season is basically over. If you visit then, it is better to shift the focus of your itinerary to cultural sites and Gobi landscapes.
- Hydration and Dryness Protection: The local climate is dry, so drink more water during your trip and bring lip balm and body lotion. Travelers with sensitive stomachs can prepare digestive medicine, and if eating a lot of beef and lamb, pay attention to keeping your diet balanced.
- Starry-Sky Photography: There is relatively little light pollution at night, so with a tripod you may be able to photograph the Milky Way over the Gobi. When going to desert or Gobi-edge areas, pay attention to safety and do not go deep into areas without signal on your own.
