The temperature difference between morning and evening is fairly noticeable in Fangshan’s mountain areas, so it is best to bring a jacket when you go out.
Fangshan is a suburban Beijing area well suited to short trips. It brings together mountains, rivers, karst caves, and cultural heritage sites, making it good for weekend self-drive trips as well as family outings.
Recommended Itineraries
- Two-Day Trip (Mountains and Rivers + Caves + Leisure)
- Day 1: Arrive at the Shidu Scenic Area in the morning and enjoy the mountain-and-river scenery along the Juma River. In the afternoon, you can arrange high-mountain rafting or an off-road ATV mountain ride. For dinner, try farmhouse dishes around Shidu, then stay nearby and experience the quiet atmosphere of a night in the mountains.
- Day 2: Visit Shihua Cave in the morning and see the natural cave landscape, where the temperature stays at about 13°C year-round. In the afternoon, head to Pofengling (for spring flowers or autumn red leaves) or Shenglian Mountain, relax in the forested hills, then return.
- One-Day Trip (Family Summer Escape + Water Activities)
- Morning: Go to Beijing Yinhu Cave, a rare cave in North China that combines dry passages and water caves. You can also take a boat ride on the underground river. The cave interior is cool.
- Afternoon: Visit the shallow water areas and riverbanks around Heilongguan or Sandu, where children can play in the water and pick up stones. There are cafés nearby, making it a relaxed place to stop with kids.
Key Attractions
Fangshan has a wide variety of landscapes, with representative natural scenery, impressive caves, and historic sites.
- Shidu Scenic Area: A natural scenic area in Beijing, with the Juma River running through it. The scenery varies from the First Crossing to the Eighteenth Crossing. In summer, it is suitable for rafting and water-friendly activities, and is often called the “Little Guilin of the North.”
- Shihua Cave: A natural cave where the temperature stays at about 13°C year-round. The cave’s depth is equivalent to the height of a 30-story building, and its stalactites show rich layers under the lighting, making it highly scenic.
- Pofengling: A representative spot in the Beijing suburbs for viewing red leaves, and its spring scenery is also worth planning for. The hiking trails are relatively gentle, making it suitable for the whole family.
- Shenglian Mountain: A place combining mountain forests, Buddhist temples, and Taoist temples. Known as the “Little Mount Hua of western Beijing,” it has an average summer temperature of 26°C and is suitable for escaping the heat and hiking.
- Yunju Temple: First built in the late Sui to early Tang period, the temple houses precious red flesh relics of the Buddha, as well as the “Three Scriptures”: stone scriptures, wooden scriptures, and scriptures written in tongue blood.
- Yinhu Cave: A rare cave in North China where visitors can walk through dry cave passages and take a boat into an underground river. The cave’s treasured highlight, the “Cat-Head Silver Fox,” is the main attraction.

Practical Travel Tips
- Transportation: Fangshan’s attractions are fairly spread out, so driving is more recommended. Parking is usually convenient, and most scenic areas charge around 10 yuan per visit for parking. If using public transport, you can first take the subway to the Fangshan Line, then transfer to a bus or taxi to reach the scenic area.
- Where to Stay: If you plan to visit the areas around Shidu or Yesanpo, you can choose a local guesthouse or resort. If your itinerary is focused around the urban outskirts, staying near Liangxiang or Changyang will make dining and transport more convenient.
- Notes: Caves such as Shihua Cave and Yinhu Cave are relatively cool inside, so bring a light jacket. The ground in the caves may be wet and slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. In summer, when spending time by the river, pay attention to sun protection and safety, and do not enter deep-water areas.
