Yamaguchi’s coast can be windy, so bring a jacket and keep an eye on the weather.
Yamaguchi Prefecture is located at the westernmost tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, it offers views of the Sea of Japan coast as well as many historic remains, and is often called “Kansai’s backyard.” It is well suited to travelers who prefer natural scenery and a slower-paced trip.
Below is a classic 3-day, 2-night route linking Yamaguchi Prefecture’s main sights and signature foods.
Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Seafood and Cross-Sea Views in Shimonoseki
In the morning, head to Karato Market to try fresh seafood. In the afternoon, drive to Tsunoshima Bridge to enjoy the blue-green sea and the bridge stretching across it. Around dusk, visit Motonosumi Shrine to see the vermilion torii gates set against the coastal cliffs. Return to central Shimonoseki at night and plan a meal of fugu cuisine.
- Day 2: Limestone Cave and Hot Spring Break
In the morning, visit Akiyoshido, Japan’s largest limestone cave. The cave stays around 17°C year-round and feels pleasantly cool. In the afternoon, return above ground and view the karst grassland landscape of Akiyoshidai. In the evening, head to Yuda Onsen in Yamaguchi City for a relaxing soak, and try kawara soba, soba noodles grilled on a roof tile, for dinner.
- Day 3: Strolling Through a Historic Meiji Restoration Town
Spend the third day in Hagi City. Walk through the well-preserved white-walled streets of the old castle town, visit historic sites such as Shokasonjuku Academy, and take in the quiet atmosphere of the old district. In the afternoon, you can try Hagi-yaki pottery making, then buy souvenirs before heading back.
Main Sights
Yamaguchi Prefecture’s attractions are spread far apart, so consider prioritizing the following places when planning your route:
- Tsunoshima Bridge: One of Japan’s well-known bridges over the sea, about 1,780 meters long and free to cross. In clear weather, the water appears blue-green, giving the area a strong island feel. You can look out over the full view from Amagase Park at the bridgehead, but stopping on the bridge to take photos is prohibited.
- Motonosumi Shrine: This shrine has 123 vermilion torii gates stretching down a slope toward the cliffs and the sea. It was once included by CNN in its list of 31 of Japan’s most beautiful places. From above, the contrast between the torii gates and the ocean is striking. Visiting in the morning is recommended to avoid peak crowds.
- Akiyoshido: One of Japan’s larger limestone caves, with a variety of stalactite formations inside, including the “Hundred Plates” and the 15-meter-high “Golden Pillar.” The cave stays around 17°C throughout the year, making it comfortable to visit in summer. Non-slip shoes are recommended.
- Hagi Castle Town: An old district connected to the origins of the Meiji Restoration, with relatively little commercialization. White walls, former samurai residences, and seaside scenery come together to create a quiet neighborhood atmosphere, making it a good place to slow down and explore on foot.
Signature Food Experiences
When traveling in Yamaguchi Prefecture, look out for these local flavors:
- Shimonoseki Fugu: Shimonoseki is the Japanese city with the largest fugu catch. Winter is the peak season, when you can try fugu sashimi, fugu hot pot, or fried fugu at specialty restaurants. Fugu is also often regarded as an ingredient with auspicious meaning.
- Kawara Soba: This dish is made by placing a heated black stone on a roof tile, then warming matcha soba noodles on top. It is eaten with lemon, nori, and mentaiko. The noodles have a firm, chewy texture and are one of Yamaguchi’s representative local dishes.
- Kensaki Squid: A specialty of Susa Bay in Hagi City. Freshly cut live squid has a springy texture and a slight wriggling sensation when eaten. In addition to sashimi, you can also choose dishes such as squid tempura rice bowls.
- Seafood Rice Bowl: At Karato Market or fresh fish shops in the city, you can find seafood rice bowls with around 15 kinds of seafood, such as tuna, sea urchin, and sweet shrimp. Prices are in the hundred-thousand-yen range, and the variety of ingredients is rich.
Transport and Travel Tips
- Getting Around: Distances between sights in Yamaguchi Prefecture are long, and public transport services are relatively infrequent. Some buses run only three times a day, so driving is recommended. If you are starting from Fukuoka or Hiroshima, you can rent a car there, and the coastal roads are scenic enough to include in your route.
- Payment: Some unmanned rural stations and small shops do not accept IC cards such as Suica, so it is best to carry cash.
- Weather Effects: The views at Tsunoshima Bridge and Motonosumi Shrine are strongly affected by the weather. On cloudy days, the sea color can look dull, so check the forecast before setting out and try to visit on a clear day.
- Warmth and Sun Protection: The Sea of Japan coast can be quite windy, so bring a light jacket even in summer. There is also little shade by the sea, so sun protection is important.
