Kofu has a basin climate, so spring and autumn are better for exploring on foot.
Kofu is the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture and was once an important base developed by the Sengoku-period warlord Takeda Shingen. The city combines historic sites, wine-producing areas, and the industrial character of a “city of gems.” From Tokyo’s Shinjuku, you can take the JR Chuo Line limited express directly to Kofu in about 1.5 to 2 hours, making it suitable for a day trip from Tokyo or a two-day weekend itinerary.
Classic One-Day City Route
This route is centered on JR Kofu Station and mainly links sights by walking and short bus rides, with an overall relaxed pace.
- Morning: From the south exit of Kofu Station, walk about 3 minutes to Maizuru Castle Park (Kofu Castle Ruins). You can climb up to the castle tower base for a view over the Kofu Basin, and on clear days you may also see Mount Fuji. Then walk to Koshu Yume Koji on the north side, stroll and dine in this retro district that recreates streetscapes from the Meiji to early Showa periods, and see the landmark “Bell of Time.”
- Noon: Eat around Kofu Station and try Yamanashi’s signature dishes, hoto (hearty stewed noodles) and tori motsu-ni (simmered chicken offal).
- Afternoon: Take a bus to Takeda Shrine to visit a Sengoku-period castle site that still preserves old moats and stone-wall remains, and learn about the historical background connected with “Furinkazan.” After that, you can visit the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art to see original works by Millet and sculptures by Rodin; alternatively, choose the Crystal Museum to learn about Kofu’s industrial history as the “city of gems.”
Two-Day Nature Hiking Route
If you have more time, spend the second day in the natural scenery around Kofu, experiencing ravines and mountain landscapes.
- Day 1: Visit the main sights following the city route above. In the evening, you can eat at a shopping complex near Kofu Station, such as CELEO, then stay at a city-center hotel with an open-air hot spring.
- Day 2: From the south exit of Kofu Station, take a bus to Shosenkyo Gorge, about 40 minutes away. This area is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in Japan, and is good for hiking among unusual rock formations and viewing Sengataki Falls. In good weather, you can also look out toward Mount Fuji from the mountaintop. At noon, you can try flowing somen noodles at the top of the mountain, then return to the city in the afternoon or continue your journey onward.
Local Food and Noted Restaurants
Kofu is known for local cuisine and wine. The following foods and shops can be considered for your itinerary.
- Hoto: A representative local dish of Yamanashi Prefecture. Thick, unsalted handmade noodles are cooked together with pumpkin, Chinese cabbage, carrots, and other vegetables. The broth is usually miso-based, with a hearty texture that suits cold weather.
- Suggested restaurants: Kosaku (a well-known shop in front of the station, often busy), Kobaiya (a long-established local restaurant with good reviews and generous portions).
- Tori motsu-ni: A representative local snack from Yamanashi. Chicken offal such as liver and gizzard is slowly simmered with soy sauce and sugar, giving it a sweet-salty flavor that goes well with rice.
- Suggested restaurant: Okuto Honten (founded in 1913 and considered the birthplace of Kofu’s simmered chicken offal).

- Koshu wine: Yamanashi Prefecture is one of Japan’s important wine-producing regions, and Kofu also has long-established wineries where you can tour and taste wines.
- Suggested experience: SADOYA WINERY (a long-standing winery founded in 1917, with a sizable underground wine cellar).
Souvenirs and Local Specialties
Before leaving Kofu, you can buy foods and crafts with Yamanashi character.
- Shingen mochi: A classic wagashi made with a glutinous rice cake, brown sugar syrup, and roasted soybean flour. It is said to be connected with the marching rations of Takeda Shingen.
- Suggested brands: Kikyouya (well known), Kinseiken (its fresh Shingen mochi has a softer texture).
- Koshu grapes and wine: Yamanashi grapes are outstanding in quality. In season, you can buy fresh grapes; outside the harvest season, grape juice or bottled wine are also good choices.
- Where to buy: product shops inside Kofu Station, Koshu Yume Koji.
- Crystal and gemstone accessories: Kofu is known as the “city of gems,” and there is a wide variety of crystal products and jewelry, making them suitable souvenirs.
- Where to buy: inside the Crystal Museum, jewelry shops in the city.
Transport and Practical Tips
- Long-distance transport: From Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, take the JR Chuo Line limited express (Azusa / Kaiji) to Kofu Station. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is recommended to reserve a designated seat in advance through a JR ticket office or website.
- Getting around the city: City sights such as Maizuru Castle Park and Koshu Yume Koji are close to Kofu Station and can be reached on foot. To get to Takeda Shrine or Shosenkyo Gorge, you need to take a bus. Bus services within Yamanashi Prefecture are relatively limited, so check the timetable before setting out.
- Itinerary reminders: Central Kofu is fairly quiet at night, and commercial facilities close relatively early, so it is best to arrange dinner and accommodation before evening. In winter (December to March), some bus sections to Shosenkyo Gorge stop operating, so confirm opening and transport conditions before hiking or taking the bus.
