Putian’s travel appeal combines the cultural heritage of its old city with the scenery of its islands. In the city, you can explore a thousand years of Song-era culture, while Meizhou Island is ideal for enjoying the sea. Prices are generally reasonable and visitor numbers are modest, so you can plan a 2–3-day trip.
- Meizhou Island: The birthplace of Mazu worship, the island is known for its coastal scenery and religious culture. Mazu Temple, Goose Tail Stone Garden, Rainbow Road, and Golden Beach can all be included in your itinerary. On clear days, the deep blue sea is especially beautiful.
- Xinghua Prefecture Historical and Cultural District: The district retains the street layout of the Song dynasty, while red-brick traditional homes and Ming- and Qing-era arcades create the character of the old city. It is ideal to arrive in the evening, sample local snacks while walking around, and enjoy the streets illuminated by lanterns after dark.
- Nanshan Guanghua Temple: This thousand-year-old temple is one of Fujian’s four major Buddhist monastic complexes. Despite its steady stream of worshippers, it remains relatively quiet. The Shakyamuni Pagoda was built during the Southern Song dynasty, and the red walls and golden roof tiles look especially good in photographs under the sunlight.
- Shouxi Park: This national 4A-rated scenic area is one of the larger waterfront parks in the city. Walk across Yanshou Ancient Bridge to admire its historic appearance, then follow the greenway and enjoy the natural surroundings along the water.
- Ancient Watchtower: One of Putian’s landmark buildings, this Song-era city tower predates Beijing’s Tiananmen. When the night lighting comes on, its vermilion structure looks especially dignified, making it a good place to view the night scenery and take photos.
- Putian Museum: The building’s outline is inspired by the ruyi scepter held by Mazu. Its collection includes more than 1,000 valuable cultural relics, offering an introduction to Puyang culture and Mazu culture. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
Suggested Itinerary
- Day 1 (City Cultural Route): Visit Nanshan Guanghua Temple in the morning. At lunchtime, choose a vegetarian meal or doujiang chao near the temple. In the afternoon, visit the Putian Museum and Shouxi Park in that order. In the evening, walk around the Xinghua Prefecture Historical and Cultural District and sample local snacks, then see the Ancient Watchtower lit up at night.
- Day 2 (Relaxed Island Route): Take a boat from Wenjia Ferry Terminal to Meizhou Island early in the morning; the journey takes about 15 minutes. Visit Mazu Temple and pray for blessings in the morning, then explore the coastal erosion landforms at Goose Tail Stone Garden in the afternoon. Around sunset, choose either Golden Beach or Rainbow Road. In the evening, you can attend the *Impression Mazu* performance.
- Day 3 (Off-the-Beaten-Path Scenic Route, Optional): If you have time, visit Yangwei Village to experience the waterside scenery of this thousand-year-old village of successful imperial examination candidates. Alternatively, head to Tinggang Mountain to see the wind turbines set against the blue sea and enjoy a quieter landscape.
Local Specialties
- Putian Braised Noodles: Handmade thin noodles are served with a broth slowly simmered from pork bones, oysters, shrimp, and other ingredients. The noodles are springy and absorb the fresh seafood flavors, making this a common dish at local festival banquets.
- Doujiang Chao: This Putian specialty uses thick soy milk instead of cooking oil to stir-fry rice vermicelli, with cabbage, oysters, and other ingredients. The result is savory and fresh, with a soft, dense texture and a distinctly local preparation.
- Xitianwei Bianshi: Thin wrappers enclose finely chopped pork filling. After boiling, the dumplings are served in bone broth with chopped scallions and celery. Locals often pair them with pieces of youtiao, creating contrasting textures.
- Qiangrou: Lean pork is coated in flour and cooked in broth, producing tender meat slices and a flavorful soup. It is commonly served with staple foods in everyday local meals.
- Hongtuan: A traditional pastry commonly enjoyed during Chinese New Year in Putian. Glutinous rice flour is used for the wrapper, filled with mung bean paste or a glutinous rice mixture, then pressed in a mold to create auspicious patterns before steaming. It is soft, sticky, fragrant, and sweet.
- Lychee Meat: Pork tenderloin is cut into pieces, coated with chopped water chestnuts and starch, fried until golden, then tossed in a sweet-and-sour sauce. The finished dish resembles red lychees, with a crisp exterior and tender meat inside.
Accommodation and Transportation Guide
- Transportation: You can arrive by high-speed rail at Putian Station. A taxi from the station to the main city attractions takes about 15 minutes. To reach Meizhou Island, take a boat from Wenjia Ferry Terminal. Boats run about every 20 minutes, and the one-way journey takes around 15 minutes. Buy tickets in advance through the “Meizhou Island Ferry” mini program, and carry your ID card.
- Accommodation: First-time visitors can stay near the Xinghua Prefecture Historical and Cultural District or Wenxian Pedestrian Street, which makes it easy to walk to historic attractions and find places to eat and shop. If Meizhou Island is the main focus of your trip, consider a sea-view guesthouse near Lianchi’ao or Golden Beach for convenient sunrise and sunset views.
Travel Tips
- Ferry Services and Weather: Weather conditions may affect ferry services to Meizhou Island, so check for suspension notices before setting out. Ferry tickets and island accommodation are often in short supply during holidays, so make reservations about a week in advance.
- Parking and Accommodation Reservations: Near Wenjia Ferry Terminal and Meizhou Island, be cautious if people approach you to solicit parking, accommodation, or incense products. Whenever possible, book through reputable channels.
- Sun Protection and Clothing: UV rays are strong along the coast and on the island, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Dress appropriately when visiting Guanghua Temple, Mazu Temple, and other temples, and wear comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing.
- Ordering Seafood: When eating at a seafood stall on the island or by the sea, confirm prices before ordering to avoid disputes over the bill.
- Souvenirs: Good choices include Fengting cake, Xinghua rice vermicelli, and Fumao Bingjiang mung bean cakes. Dried goods such as Xinghua rice vermicelli can be bought at local supermarkets or markets, where prices are usually lower than at scenic areas and it is easier to choose authentic products.
