Qinhuangdao travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 17

Qinhuangdao is a seaside city well suited to relaxed vacations, with a long coastline where historic sites coexist with modern leisure spaces. Here is a four-day, three-night itinerary arranged along the coast.

  • Pigeon Nest Park: A good place to watch the sunrise over the sea. At low tide, you can search the shore for shells, and the wetlands are also suitable for birdwatching.
  • Old Dragon’s Head: This is where the Great Wall reaches the sea. From in front of the Chenghai Tower, you can watch the waves meet the wall.
  • Aranya Auditorium: This white building faces the sea and has a simple architectural style. Entry to the area requires advance reservation or a ticket.
  • West Harbor Garden: Converted from an abandoned port with more than a century of history, the park features seaside railway tracks, a large ship, and flower-filled lawns. Admission is free.
  • Biluo Pagoda Sea Bar Park: The park uses a blue-and-white seaside architectural style. You can watch the sunset in the evening, followed by beach performances and light shows at night.
  • Xianluo Island: It has a 1,038-meter-long cross-sea cableway offering views over Bohai Bay from above. The cableway may stop operating in strong winds.
  • The First Pass Under Heaven: From the city gate tower, you can look over the old town of Shanhaiguan and learn about the historic character of its streets during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
  • Laohushi Sea Park: The park has broad stretches of rocks and a gently sloping beach, making it suitable for walking in the waves. In the evening, you can also watch seagulls and the sunset.

Four-Day, Three-Night Itinerary Without Backtracking

Qinhuangdao’s main attractions are spread along the coast, so you can visit them from north to south or south to north to reduce unnecessary travel.

  • Day 1: Shanhaiguan history and culture
    • Morning: After arriving, go first to Old Dragon’s Head to see where the Great Wall meets the sea.
    • Afternoon: Explore Shanhaiguan Ancient Town, climb the tower at The First Pass Under Heaven, and try Sitiaobao and poluo-leaf cakes.
  • Evening: Return to the Haigang District and sample street food at Qinhuang Alley.
  • Day 2: Beidaihe seaside route
    • Early morning: Go to Pigeon Nest Park to watch the sunrise. At low tide, you can bring a small bucket to search the shore and dig for clams.
  • Afternoon: Head to Laohushi to get close to the rocks and enjoy the sea views, or go instead to Azure Coast for a seaside walk and some relaxation.
  • Evening: Go to Biluo Pagoda for the sunset, then enjoy beach performances and leisure activities at night.
  • Day 3: Haigang District leisure route
    • Morning: Visit West Harbor Garden to see the old railway tracks, seaside cafés, and other port-renovation features.
    • Afternoon: Walk along Jinmeng Bay, or ride the Qinhuang Eye Ferris wheel for an elevated view of the coastline.
  • Evening: Plan a seafood meal and experience the local dining scene.
  • Day 4: A slow day in Aranya or departure
    • Morning: Go to the Aranya community to visit the Lonely Library and Aranya Auditorium. Non-residents can enter by purchasing a ticket to the Dune Art Museum.
  • Afternoon: Relax at a community café and enjoy the sea breeze. You can also visit the Cat’s Sky Castle bookstore to mail a postcard before heading home.

Local Specialties

Besides seafood, Qinhuangdao has many regional snacks and long-established restaurants.

  • Ye Cunli Seafood Stuffed Dumplings: The steamed dumplings contain a whole large shrimp. The firm shrimp meat makes this a well-known local old brand.
  • Yipin Yuxiang Dry-Pot Duck Heads: A long-established Sichuan restaurant. Its dry-pot duck heads have a rich flavor and pair especially well with small fennel fried dough sticks.
  • Yonghouchang Mutton Soup: Suitable for breakfast, this soup is milky white with a rich flavor and is served with mutton huoshao flatbread.
  • Xicheng Barbecue: A place to try local barbecue. Gonghoujin has a soft, chewy texture, while the crispy fatty cuts are another local specialty.
  • Qinhuang Alley: A collection of local snacks, including grilled pig’s feet, pan-fried menzi, and hawthorn juice.
  • Shanhaiguan Mixed Hot Pot: A traditional charcoal-fired copper pot combining pickled cabbage and pork with seafood, prawns, and mantis shrimp. Portions are generous, making it especially suitable for autumn and winter.

Choosing Where to Stay

Each area of Qinhuangdao has its own advantages, so choose based on your plans for the second day.

  • Beidaihe District (Liuzhuang/Laohushi): Convenient for visiting Pigeon Nest and Biluo Pagoda, making it suitable for itineraries focused on seaside activities. Room rates vary greatly in peak season. The main street of Liuzhuang Night Market can be noisy, so light sleepers may prefer accommodation farther away.
  • Haigang District (Jinmeng Bay): Centrally located, with relatively balanced driving times to Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan. It has plenty of restaurants and shopping malls, making it suitable for self-driving travelers and families with older adults or children.
  • Shanhaiguan District: Close to the old town and Old Dragon’s Head, it suits visitors who want to focus on historic sites and prefer a quiet environment. Accommodation mainly consists of traditional-style inns and seaside hotels.
  • Aranya/Changli: There are many distinctive guesthouses, making the area suitable for a slower-paced vacation. Costs are relatively high, and entry to the community usually requires a reservation or a room booking, so plan ahead.

Transportation and Travel Tips

  • Transportation: By high-speed rail, Beidaihe Station is usually the best choice because it is close to the tourist areas. For the city center, choose Qinhuangdao Station; for Shanhaiguan, use Shanhaiguan Station. City buses and taxis are convenient. Shared electric bikes are not recommended when traveling with children because coastal winds can be strong.
  • Aranya reservations: Aranya Auditorium and the Lonely Library require advance reservations through the official app. You can also stay at a community hotel or guesthouse, or enter by purchasing a ticket to the UCCA Dune Art Museum. Confirm the entry method before setting out.
  • Checking tides when searching the shore: Before searching for shells at Pigeon Nest or Shallow Water Bay, check the tide tables. Low tide is the right time to go; high tide is mainly suitable for viewing the sea.
  • Seafood purchases: When buying seafood at a market and having it cooked, confirm the price and weighing unit first, including whether it is charged by jin or liang. Prefer shops with clearly marked prices.
  • Autumn clothing: In October, Qinhuangdao’s coast has a noticeable temperature difference between day and night, and winds can be strong, so bring a windproof jacket. Coastal sunlight is also strong, so sunscreen and a hat are useful.
