In autumn, the temperature difference between day and night in Hengshui is fairly large, and winds by the lake can be strong, so bring a light jacket.
Located in central Hebei, Hengshui combines the wetland scenery of Hengshui Lake with a rich historical and cultural heritage, making it well suited to a relaxing two-day, one-night trip.
- Hengshui Lake: One of the largest inland freshwater lakes on the North China Plain, it is known as “the most beautiful wetland in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.” The lakeside shoreline is free to access. You can take a boat to the islands, cycle, or watch the sunset at Marathon Square. In autumn, the reeds turn yellow, making it a good time for birdwatching.
- Baoyun Temple and Baoyun Pagoda: First built during the Sui and Tang dynasties, Baoyun Pagoda is the oldest surviving building in Hengshui. It has an octagonal, nine-story brick-and-wood structure. Climb the pagoda for views over the city, or enjoy a quiet walk and pay your respects in the temple grounds.
- Lüli Ancient Town: A Han-style town themed around the Confucian scholar Sun Jing, with pavilions, towers and buildings featuring gray brick and dark roof tiles. Visitors can tour in Hanfu and take part in traditional cultural activities such as movable-type printing.
- Hengshui Museum: Admission is free. Its exhibitions trace several thousand years of Hengshui history, and the collection includes six nationally designated Grade One cultural relics. The spacious building and comprehensive displays make it a good place to learn about local culture and a suitable weekend outing for families.
- Wuqing New Year Picture Museum: China’s first museum dedicated to New Year pictures, showcasing Wuqing New Year pictures, a national-level intangible cultural heritage. You can learn about woodblock carving and New Year picture production, and print your own “fish every year” picture.
Two-Day, One-Night Itinerary
- Day 1 (Nature and Lakeside Views): After arriving in the morning, head to Hengshui Lake and enter through the east gate. Follow the lakeside trail, then take a boat from the pier to Sansheng Island, Meihua Island and Sakura Island for birdwatching and sightseeing. For lunch, try iron-pot-braised assorted lake fish by the lake. In the afternoon, visit the Wetland Science Museum. At dusk, rent a bicycle at Marathon Square and cycle around the lake while waiting for sunset.
- Day 2 (History and Old-World Charm): Visit Hengshui Museum in the morning to learn about the historical development of this city, once regarded as the foremost of the ancient Nine Provinces. Before lunch, head to the old street in the city center to try Jizhou braised pancakes and shoe-sole sesame cakes. In the afternoon, climb Baoyun Pagoda at Baoyun Temple for a view over the city, or visit Lüli Ancient Town for a Hanfu photo session, then buy souvenirs before heading home.
Local Food Guide
- Jizhou Braised Pancakes: A signature traditional food from Hengshui. The pancake strips are pleasantly chewy and absorb the aroma of the meat and the broth, creating a rich flavor. They are commonly eaten for breakfast or as an everyday meal.
- Hengshui Lake Whole-Fish Feast: A specialty of the lake area, featuring freshly stewed crucian carp, yellow catfish and other fish, served with corn flatbread for dipping in the fish broth. You can also try crispy fried whitebait, fish-ball soup with cattail stems and other preparations. For around 50–60 yuan per person, you can eat very well.
- Shoe-Sole Sesame Cake: Named for its resemblance to a shoe sole, this sesame cake is crisp on the outside and soft inside, made using a handmade technique passed down for more than a century. It can be eaten on its own or filled with smoked meat or donkey meat.
- Hengshui Lake Roast Duck Eggs: Duck eggs are seasoned with five-spice powder and roasted. The whites are firm and springy, while the yolks have a fine, sandy texture and a rich, oily taste. Moderately salty, they make a convenient local souvenir.
- Raoyang Tofu Pudding: Served with a rich gravy and plenty of toppings, it is often paired with freshly fried youtiao or meat-filled pancakes. With a pronounced soybean aroma, it is a common local breakfast combination.
Transportation and Accommodation Guide
- Transportation: High-speed trains reach Hengshui North Railway Station, about 2 hours from Beijing and about 40 minutes from Shijiazhuang. Taxis in the city start at 7 yuan, and shared electric bikes are widely available. Bus Route 18 goes to Hengshui Lake.
- Accommodation: You can stay in central Taocheng District or around Hengshui Lake. Kunlun Hotel in the city costs about 300 yuan, while some rooms at Taihua Boyue Hotel near Hengshui Lake offer lake views and cost around 400 yuan on weekends.
Travel Tips
- Weather and Clothing: October is usually clear and cool. Winds around Hengshui Lake can be strong, so bring a light jacket. Bring your own binoculars for birdwatching, and consider packing mosquito repellent for activities by the lake.
- Reservations and Opening: Hengshui Museum and Baoyun Temple are free to enter, but you need to bring your ID card. Wuqing New Year Picture Museum is in Wuqing County, about a 50-minute drive from the city, so arrange transportation in advance.
