Rizhao travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 25

Rizhao's seaside attractions include free access to the coast, sunrises over the sea, tide-pool foraging and reasonably priced seafood. Compared with Qingdao, it has somewhat fewer visitors and lower prices, making it a good choice for a short seaside break. This 3-day, 2-night itinerary follows the coastline to reduce backtracking.

  • Wanpingkou Gate 3: This is one of Rizhao's signature seaside spots, with windmills, a tide tower, a stairway to the sky and swings providing varied photo backdrops. Visit early in the morning to avoid the busiest crowds.
  • Rizhao Lighthouse Scenic Area: The rocky shore offers open views, making it a good place to watch the sunrise over the sea and photograph the lighthouse's silhouette in the morning light. At low tide, you can forage among the rock crevices.
  • Sunshine Coast Gate 2: The beach area has a Love tree branch installation, angel wings and a Monet Garden for photos. You can also cycle along the coast.
  • Rizhao National Coastal Forest Park: The park combines forest and coastal scenery, with fine, soft sand. Families can rent bicycles to explore or ride the Ferris wheel for elevated sea views.
  • Dongyi Town: This seaside town, built in a traditional style, is best visited from late afternoon into the evening. Once the lanterns come on, stroll through the lanes, sample local snacks and enjoy the night views.
  • Renjiatai Reef Park: Tide-pool foraging is free here, and visitors are relatively few. At low tide, you may find small crabs and shells. Check the tide tables before setting out.
  • Taohua Island Marine Art Museum: Stop here for coffee and sea views. The white chapel and blue graffiti wall are the main photo backdrops, lending pictures a clean, fresh look.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Head to the Lighthouse Scenic Area early to watch the sunrise over the sea and enjoy the rocky shore and lighthouse views. Spend the morning exploring and taking photos at Wanpingkou Gate 3, then have home-style seafood dishes nearby for lunch. In the afternoon, cycle along the coast at Sunshine Coast Gate 2. Head to Dongyi Town toward evening for snacks, a stroll through the lanes and night views.
  • Day 2: Spend the morning foraging at Renjiatai Reef Park, digging for clams and looking for small crabs. Adjust your timing to the tides. In the afternoon, walk through the forest park and ride the Ferris wheel for sea views. For dinner, try University Town Night Market or Shijiu Seafood Market for local snacks and reasonably priced seafood.
  • Day 3: Visit Sunshine Coast early for the sunrise, then head to Taohua Island Marine Art Museum for coffee and photos with a fresh, clean look. In the afternoon, depending on the time available, visit Hailong Bay Pier or buy some Rizhao green tea as a local souvenir before heading home.

Recommended Rizhao Specialties

Rizhao's food centers on seafood and local snacks. Choose from the following to suit your itinerary.

  • Haishazi Noodles: The broth is made with haishazi, a local marine delicacy, and is known for its savory flavor. Try it with broad, knife-cut noodles, or alongside small seafood served in a seasoned sauce.
  • Steam-Pot Seafood: Freshly caught live seafood is steamed to preserve its natural flavor. Pair it with seafood dough-drop soup or rice topped with spoon worms.
  • Spanish Mackerel Dumplings: These large, generously filled dumplings highlight the tender, fresh flavor of Spanish mackerel and are one of Rizhao's signature seafood dumplings.
  • Rizhao Seafood Potstickers: These dumplings have crisp, pan-fried wrappers and savory seafood fillings. Prawn and Spanish mackerel versions are particularly representative. Serving them with seafood congee is a common local tradition.
  • Grilled Seafood and Barbecue: University Town Night Market and local barbecue restaurants serve grilled squid, prawns and fatty pork strips. Seasoning is relatively simple, with the seafood's natural flavors taking center stage.
  • Lanshan Handmade Pancakes: One of Rizhao's signature staples, these thin pancakes are cooked fresh and can be dipped in the sauce from stir-fried chicken or in seafood broth.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Where to stay: For sea views and easy beach access, stay near Wanpingkou or the lighthouse. For a quieter holiday setting, consider the area around No. 3 Bathing Beach or the forest park. For a lively neighborhood and convenient transport, choose somewhere near MixC in the city center or University Town. Book ahead, as sea-view room prices usually rise considerably in peak season.
  • Getting around: If arriving by high-speed train, consider Rizhao Railway Station first, as it is closer to the city center and attractions. Rizhao West Railway Station is farther away. The main attractions are spread along the coast and can be reached by taxi, shared electric scooter or bicycle. Try to avoid congested roads during the morning and evening rush hours.

Travel Tips

  • Plan tide-pool foraging around the tides: Check the tide tables first. You can generally arrive 1–2 hours before low tide. Wear non-slip water shoes on the rocks, bring a small shovel, tongs and a bucket, and watch your footing.
  • Check the sunrise time: The original itinerary gives a recent sunrise time of around 7:10 a.m.; check the actual time for your travel date. Arrive half an hour early to watch the sky shift from pink and blue to orange and red.
  • Choose licensed transport and services: Be cautious of drivers soliciting passengers and unofficial guides near railway and bus stations. Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing services where possible.
  • Bring windproof layers: In late October, Rizhao has noticeable temperature differences between day and night, and coastal winds can be strong. Bring a thick jacket to keep warm.
  • Confirm seafood costs in advance: Choose small restaurants popular with local residents or places with clearly displayed prices. If you buy seafood at a market and take it to a nearby restaurant for cooking, ask about the preparation fee first.
