Zaozhuang combines the waterside scenery of southern Shandong with revolutionary historic sites and distinctive local food. A two-day, one-night trip allows time to explore the ancient town, enjoy natural scenery and sample food along its streets and lanes.
- Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town: Known as the “living ancient canal” and the “Venice of the East,” the town offers old streets and waterways to explore on foot. You can also take a traditional sculling boat, listen to the boatwoman sing folk tunes, and admire the Huizhou-style architecture and scenery reminiscent of the water towns south of the Yangtze. After dark, watch the Fuxing Tower light show and the traditional Fire Dragon molten-iron sparks performance. Admission costs RMB 118 per person and is valid for two days. Staying inside the ancient town also lets you explore its lanes in the early morning, when there are fewer visitors.
- Weishan Lake Red Lotus Wetland: One of China’s largest lotus wetlands, this area has vast expanses of red lotus flowers in summer. In autumn, reed beds and open water become the main attractions. Take a traditional sightseeing boat for a closer look at the wetland scenery. This is also one of the settings of the Railway Guerrillas story.
- Baodugu Forest Park: Known as the “Little Mount Tai of Southern Shandong,” the park features rugged mountains and dense forests. Follow the mountain trails to the summit for views of the surrounding ranges. It suits visitors looking for forest walks, fresh air or photographs of peaceful mountain scenery.
- Guanshi Pomegranate Garden: The world’s largest pomegranate garden contains ancient pomegranate trees dating back a thousand years. Qingtan Temple also stands within the grounds, surrounded by quiet wooded hills. Pomegranates ripen in September and October, when you can arrange to pick them. Large, sweet pomegranates can be bought for just RMB 5.
- Railway Guerrillas Scenic Area: This attraction focuses on revolutionary history, recreating settings such as Weishan Lake and the old Lincheng station. The immersive live performance Railway Guerrillas helps visitors understand the story, making it a suitable educational outing with children or older family members.
Suggested Two-Day, One-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive in Zaozhuang and explore Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town by day and night
- Afternoon: After arriving in Zaozhuang, take a BRT bus, such as route B10, or a taxi to Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town. Settle into your accommodation, then enter the town to explore Boat-Shaped Street and the old canal. Visit the Battle of Tai’erzhuang Memorial Hall to learn about local history. Admission to the memorial hall is free, but advance reservations are required.
- Early evening: Rest at a riverside teahouse in the ancient town as the red lanterns along the streets come on. After 19:00, the town’s nighttime lighting is fully switched on, making this a good time to stroll along the waterways and enjoy the lights and their reflections.
- Evening: Take a nighttime ride on a traditional sculling boat for about RMB 60 per person, and watch the traditional Fire Dragon molten-iron sparks performance at the time announced that day. After 21:00, some areas around the edge of the ancient town open for free, allowing visitors on a budget to photograph the light show from the outskirts.
- Day 2: Explore nature or revolutionary history, then head home
- Early morning: Walk around the ancient town between 7:00 and 8:30, when there are fewer visitors. Morning mist and quiet lanes provide a backdrop for photos in hanfu, traditional Chinese clothing.
- Morning: Choose a nature outing to suit the season: take a boat ride among the lotus flowers at Weishan Lake Red Lotus Wetland in summer, or pick pomegranates and visit Qingtan Temple at Guanshi Pomegranate Garden in autumn. Alternatively, visit the Railway Guerrillas Scenic Area for its live performance.
- Afternoon: Before leaving, try mutton soup and vegetable pancakes in central Zaozhuang or Tengzhou.
Local Food Specialties
Zaozhuang’s food has a distinct southern Shandong character, with a wide range of flour-based foods and many richly flavored, spicy dishes. Choose places to eat that fit your itinerary.
- Zaozhuang Spicy Chicken: Local free-range young roosters are stir-fried over high heat with wrinkled-skin chili peppers. The chicken is firm and chewy, with a pronounced heat that is not harsh. Wrap it in Yimeng whole-wheat pancakes, or mix noodles into the sauce.
- Tengzhou Vegetable Pancakes: A common street food, these pancakes are made by spreading mixed-grain batter on a griddle and cooking it until golden and crisp, then wrapping it around a selection of more than a dozen fillings, including chives, glass noodles and tofu. Crisp outside and soft inside, they have a light, fresh taste. Each costs RMB 5–8 and is substantial enough for a meal.
- Beef and Daylily Noodles: This canal-style noodle dish is a Tai’erzhuang specialty. The broth is slowly simmered with beef bones and more than 30 spices, then served with daylily buds, lean beef and smooth, chewy hand-rolled noodles. The broth is rich, and about RMB 15 per person buys a filling meal.
- Xiji Mutton Soup: Known as the “finest soup in southern Shandong,” this soup is made with free-range white goats, slowly simmered in mountain spring water until the broth turns milky white. It is rich and savory without a gamey taste, and broth refills are free. Soak freshly baked shaobing flatbread in the soup, then add cilantro and ground pepper to taste. It is a good choice for a warming meal.
- Yicheng Pomegranate Pancakes: This Zaozhuang specialty is made by adding fresh pomegranate juice to the ingredients and slowly cooking the pancakes using traditional methods. Brightly colored, with a mild fruity aroma and gentle sweetness, they are soft rather than dry or hard. They suit diners of different ages and also make a useful food gift.
Transport and Accommodation
- Transport:
- High-speed rail: For Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town, choose Zaozhuang Station in Xuecheng District. From the station, take BRT route B10 to the ancient town’s east gate; the journey takes about one hour and costs RMB 5. Tengzhou East Station is more convenient for Weishan Lake or central Tengzhou. Zaozhuang Station and Tengzhou East Station are far apart, so check the station name when booking and getting off the train.
- Driving: Zaozhuang’s attractions are spread out. Tai’erzhuang to Tengzhou, for example, takes about an hour by car. Driving gives you more flexibility, and most attractions offer free parking.
- Accommodation:
- Inside Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town: Waterside guesthouses offer easy access to views of the waterways. Rates are generally RMB 300–500 per night on regular days and RMB 500–800 during holidays. Your room key card allows unlimited entry to and exit from the ancient town. You can walk back after an evening outing and enjoy the quiet lanes early in the morning.
- Outside the ancient town / in the city: For a tighter budget, consider chain hotels or hostels within 500 meters of the ancient town. Sharing a room can bring the cost down to RMB 50–80 per person.
Practical Travel Tips
- Tickets and discounts: Admission to Tai’erzhuang Ancient Town costs RMB 118 and is valid for two days, with facial recognition allowing repeated entry. Free entry or discounts may be available during certain holidays or through promotions for students and graduates. Check official sources before traveling.
- Dining and transport choices: Food inside the ancient town costs 20%–30% more than in the city. Consider having main meals in the Tai’erzhuang urban area outside the ancient town or in central Zaozhuang. Decline “cheap day tours” and unlicensed rides offered at attraction entrances.
- Discussing spice levels: Local dishes tend to be salty and spicy, and spicy chicken and vegetable pancakes usually contain plenty of chili. If you cannot handle spicy food, explain this before ordering and request “mildly spicy.”
- Museum reservations: Revolutionary history venues such as the Battle of Tai’erzhuang Memorial Hall and the Railway Guerrillas Memorial Hall offer free admission, but require advance reservations using an identity card. They are usually closed on Mondays, so confirm opening hours before planning a visit.
- Clothing and footwear: Visiting Baodugu or Qingtan Temple involves climbing, so wear comfortable athletic shoes. Exploring the ancient town also requires plenty of walking, making flat shoes a good choice. Bring a light jacket for the evening breeze.
