Shaoyang travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 28

Shaoyang lies in southwestern Hunan, with attractions ranging from World Natural Heritage danxia landforms to mountain grasslands. Costs are generally low, making it a good destination for a relaxing weekend or short holiday.

  • Langshan Scenic Area: This World Natural Heritage site is known as the “Soul of Danxia.” Highlights include the “Whales Frolicking in the Sea” cloudscape at Bajiaozhai, Tianyi Lane—known as the “Finest Passage Under Heaven”—and Pepper Peak. You can also take a bamboo raft along the Fuyi River to enjoy the riverside scenery.
  • Nanshan Pasture: These mountain meadows cover about 15,333 hectares at an elevation of 1,760 meters, with an average summer temperature of 20°C. Cattle and sheep on grassy slopes, white wind turbines along the route, roads and Maoping Lake form the main scenery. It is a good place to escape the summer heat and take Japanese-style travel photos.
  • Baoqing Ancient City: A good choice for cultural sightseeing and leisurely walks in the city. Visit Beita, a Ming-dynasty pagoda, see the red walls and upturned eaves of Shuifu Temple, explore Shuangqing Park—ranked first among the Twelve Scenic Views of Baoqing—and learn about local history at Shaoyang Museum. Most of these attractions offer free admission.
  • Huayao Villages of Huxing Mountain: Located in Longhui County, these old villages retain much of their traditional way of life. The surroundings are peaceful, with relatively few visitors. Try Huayao counted-thread embroidery, listen to Wuwa mountain songs and learn about the local ethnic culture.
  • Baishuidong: Located in Xinshao County, this area features gorges, waterfalls and limestone caves, making it a pleasant summer retreat. Its giant mooncakes, weighing about 50 kilograms, are another local specialty.

Suggested 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Shaoyang and explore the city
    • Morning: Take a high-speed train to Shaoyang Railway Station, then a taxi to your hotel to check in. When booking, distinguish between Shaoyang Railway Station and Shaoyang North Railway Station.
    • Afternoon: Visit Shuangqing Park and Beita Park for views along both banks of the Zi River, then head to Shaoyang Museum to learn about Baoqing's history.
    • Evening: Eat at Hongqi Road Snack Street or Dongfeng Road Night Market. Try Shaoyang thick rice noodles and tangyou baba, glutinous rice cakes fried in sugar syrup.
  • Day 2: Travel to Langshan and explore the danxia scenery
    • Morning: Travel from the city to Langshan in Xinning County, a journey of about 1.5–2 hours. On arrival, buy a combined admission ticket and a sightseeing shuttle ticket.
    • Afternoon: Visit Tianyi Lane and Pepper Peak. Tianyi Lane is just 0.33 meters wide at its narrowest point. Then take a bamboo raft along the Fuyi River to see the danxia formations on both banks and their reflections in the water.
    • Evening: Stay at a guesthouse at the foot of Langshan. For dinner, try farmhouse dishes such as Xinning duck in blood sauce.
  • Day 3: Visit Bajiaozhai or Nanshan Pasture, then head home
    • Morning: Get up early to visit Bajiaozhai and look down over the “Whales Frolicking in the Sea” scenery. If you prefer to skip the 300-meter climb along a chain-lined trail, take the cable car. Alternatively, spend the morning at Nanshan Pasture in Chengbu to see the mountain meadows.
    • Afternoon: Travel back to Shaoyang Railway Station and take a high-speed train home.

Shaoyang Local Specialties

  • Shaoyang Thick Rice Noodles: A common local breakfast, these thick, chewy rice noodles are usually served with beef-bone broth and a beef topping. Add a spoonful of mountain pepper oil for extra aroma.
  • Xinning Duck in Blood Sauce: Stir-fried with duck blood, this signature Xinning dish has a glossy red color and a fragrant, spicy flavor that goes well with rice.
  • Pig's Blood Balls: Also known locally as xueba tofu, these are made by mixing tofu, pig's blood and pork, shaping the mixture into balls, then smoking them over pine branches. The slices have a glossy surface and a distinctive smoky, cured flavor. They also make a good food souvenir.
  • Wugang Braised Specialties: The braising stock is made with more than 20 Chinese medicinal herbs. Common choices include braised tofu and braised Tong goose. Their savory flavor also suits people who do not eat spicy food. Vacuum-packed versions are easier to carry while traveling.
  • Chengbu Oil Tea: Recognized as part of Shaoyang's intangible cultural heritage, this specialty combines a ginger-and-garlic tea broth with glutinous rice, soybeans, peanuts and other ingredients for a distinctive texture and aroma.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Transport: For high-speed rail access to the city center, choose Shaoyang Railway Station. Shaoyang North Railway Station is farther from the city, so check the station before booking. Attractions are spread out. For trips to outlying destinations such as Langshan and Nanshan Pasture, consider driving yourself or hiring a car with a driver. Public transport often requires several transfers, so allow plenty of time.
  • Accommodation: In the city, consider areas such as Daxiang District near bus stops and food streets for convenient transport and dining. For Langshan, stay in Xinning County town or a guesthouse in Langshan Town, at around RMB 150–200 per person. Nanshan Pasture also has guesthouses and hotels; book ahead for weekends and the summer school holidays.

Travel Tips

  • Temperature changes and sun protection: Nanshan Pasture and Langshan are at relatively high elevations, with noticeable temperature differences between day and night. Even in summer, morning and evening temperatures may fall into the teens Celsius. Pack a light jacket or outdoor shell. UV exposure is strong on the mountaintops, so bring sun protection too.
  • Advance tickets: Langshan tickets can be purchased online in advance. The Route B combined ticket costs RMB 136, is valid for three days and covers several main attractions. Choose according to your itinerary.
  • Spice levels: Local dishes tend to be spicy. If you cannot eat chili or have a low tolerance, clearly ask for “mild” or “no chili” when ordering.
  • Trail safety: Areas of Langshan, including Bajiaozhai, have chain-lined trails, with steep sections in places. Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Pay attention to mountain trail conditions during the rainy season.
