Hengyang travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 28

Hengyang has four distinct seasons, and temperatures vary considerably between morning and evening at the summit of Mount Heng. It is recommended to carry a jacket.

  • Mount Heng (Nanyue Hengshan): Known as the “most beautiful of the Five Great Mountains,” Mount Heng offers views of a sea of clouds from Zhurong Peak. You can also visit the Nanyue Grand Temple to pray for blessings, and in autumn and winter there is a chance of seeing rime ice.
  • Shigu Academy: One of China’s four great academies, it stands where three rivers meet. Its red walls and bamboo groves create a simple, traditional atmosphere.
  • Dongzhou Island: Located in the Xiang River, the island offers riverside views as well as visits to Chuanshan Academy and Fu Zhi Tower. It is ideal for walks, picnics and watching the fountains.
  • Baoweili Creative District: Converted from old factory buildings, this district retains a retro locomotive and graffiti walls. Its alleyways are well suited to nostalgic photography.
  • Huiyan Peak: As the first of Nanyue’s 72 peaks, it takes about 10 minutes to climb and offers views over downtown Hengyang. At dusk, you can also enjoy the sunset.
  • Nanyueli: At night, this area takes on the look of a traditional-style neighborhood, with iron-flower performances and folk shows. It is best visited in the evening.

Classic Three-Day, Two-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Downtown culture and local life
    • Morning: After arriving in Hengyang, head to your hotel to check in. The areas around Jiefang Road or Zhongshan South Road are convenient choices. Have Hengyang fish noodles or braised rice noodles for lunch.
    • Afternoon: Start at Shigu Academy to admire the meeting point of the three rivers, then visit Baoweili Creative District to see the streetscape created from renovated factory buildings.
  • Evening: Take a riverside walk on Dongzhou Island and watch the Xiang River night views and musical fountains. For dinner, try Hengyang-style stir-fries, then head to Shifu Road Food Street or Nanhuali at night.
  • Day 2: Prayers and mountain views at Nanyue
    • Morning: Set out early for Nanyue District and first visit the Nanyue Grand Temple, taking in the history of this large group of traditional Jiangnan buildings.
  • Noon: Take the sightseeing bus to Mid-Mountain Pavilion and eat along the way, choosing vegetarian dishes or bringing your own snacks.
    • Afternoon: Walk up to Zhurong Peak for views over the mountain ridges. After descending, visit the traditional-style Nanyueli district on the way.
  • Evening: Watch an intangible cultural heritage iron-flower performance in Nanyueli and have local Hengshan home-style dishes for dinner.
  • Day 3: City landmarks and a relaxed departure
    • Morning: If your energy allows, get up early to watch the sunrise and sea of clouds, then descend and return to downtown. Visit Huiyan Peak and Yanfeng Temple, look out over the city from above, and experience the imagery of “wild geese flying south.”
  • Noon: Try Hengdong crispy pork stomach or Zhaojiang rice noodles to continue exploring local Hunan flavors.
    • Afternoon: Depending on your departure time, visit the Hengyang Museum to learn about the city’s history, or relax at Cailun Bamboo Sea before buying souvenirs and heading home.

A Taste of Hengyang (Reliable Food Picks)

  • Hengyang fish noodles: The fish broth is milky white and richly flavored, with tender fish. Xihu Fish Noodles and Huaxin Pangzi Fish Noodles are options.
  • Hengyang braised rice noodles: Thick, round fresh noodles are coated in a rich, sour-and-spicy braising sauce. Zizhulin Braised Rice Noodles is a common local choice.
  • Hengdong crispy pork stomach: Stir-fried with Huang gong peppers, it is crisp and pairs well with rice. Lijun Restaurant and Zhangshuyuan Hengdong Home Cooking both serve it.
  • Hengyang-style stir-fries: Dishes are cooked quickly over high heat, giving them a distinct wok aroma. Try the rustic bowls at Wanghuo Fire Street Hunan Cuisine or the pineapple pancakes at Cai Xiafan.
  • Li-branded stinky tofu: The main shop on Jiefang Road’s Jinbu Lane serves stinky tofu with a crisp exterior and juicy center. Fried betel-nut taro is another specialty.
  • Chuanxiaobai barbecue: Barbecue served with egg fried rice is popular, and the beef is tender, but you may need to queue.

How to Choose Your Accommodation

  • Downtown commercial areas (Jiefang Road/Zhongshan South Road): Convenient for dining, shopping and getting around at night, with good overall value. Suitable for the first and third nights.
  • Along the Xiang River: Suitable for travelers who prefer river views and a slower pace. Riverside walks are comfortable at night.
  • Near the Nanyue Scenic Area: If hiking and prayer are your priorities, stay near the Nanyue Grand Temple or Nanyueli to save time getting to the scenic area the next day. Accommodation is in high demand during holidays, so book early.

Transport and Practical Tips

  • Choosing a high-speed rail station: For downtown Hengyang, use Hengyang East Station. For Mount Heng, use Hengshan West Station, which is close to the scenic area; a taxi takes about 15–20 minutes.
  • Getting around downtown: Taxis are available, with a starting fare of 6 yuan. Shared electric scooters cost 3 yuan per 30 minutes, and most attractions are not far apart.
  • Transport in the Nanyue Scenic Area: Private cars cannot enter, so visitors must take the official sightseeing buses. Tickets and transport passes can be reserved in advance through the “Nanyue One-Code Tour” mini program.
  • Preparing for local flavors: Hengyang cuisine is generally spicy and salty. When ordering, say if you prefer mild or no spice.
  • Temperature changes and gear: Temperatures vary sharply at the summit of Mount Heng, and fog is common. Bring a light jacket and a disposable raincoat, wear non-slip sports shoes, and carry a hiking stick; they cost about 2 yuan each at the foot of the mountain.
  • Travel reminders: There are no shared bicycles in Nanyue District, so you must take taxis. Buy incense products from reputable shops, and book hotels or guesthouses early during holidays.

Recommended Local Souvenirs

  • Nanyue Yunwu Tea: Grown in the high-mountain tea gardens of Mount Heng, it has a clear liquor and sweet finish, making it a suitable tea gift for elders.
  • Sauce duck: Boneless packages are available for easy carrying. The flavor is fragrant, spicy and well seasoned.
  • Crisp thin mooncakes: A traditional Hengyang pastry. Its aroma is stronger when freshly baked, with a crisp texture.
  • Tea-oil fish: Small dried fish with a Hunan-style spicy flavor, suitable as a snack with drinks.
