The Xiang River flows through Xiangtan, a city with a thousand-year history, revolutionary heritage and artistic traditions. Life here moves more slowly than in Changsha, and prices are generally modest. It suits a weekend or short holiday spent exploring on foot and experiencing everyday life in its streets and lanes.
- Wanlou · Youth Wharf: The 400-year-old Wanlou Tower stands alongside modern attractions, including the 128-meter-tall “Xiangtan Eye” Ferris wheel. Come at dusk for sunset over the Xiang River, watch the projection show on the tower at 8 p.m., then enjoy the riverside night views.
- Yaowan Historic and Cultural District: This neighborhood grew around an ancient river port with a thousand-year history. Its stone-paved lanes pass Ming- and Qing-era homes and riverside views. The former Tanbao Bus Station, Wangheng Pavilion and Tangxing Bridge are all here. Exploring on foot offers a glimpse of old Xiangtan’s streets and daily life.
- Qi Baishi Memorial Hall: Admission is free with an identity document; the hall is closed on Mondays. Original paintings of shrimp and crabs offer an introduction to Qi Baishi’s art and life. White walls and bamboo shadows create a tranquil courtyard setting that also suits portraits in traditional Chinese dress.
- Shaoshan Scenic Area: Mao Zedong’s hometown is a national 5A-rated scenic area. Sights include his former residence, with gray roof tiles and yellow earthen walls, Bronze Statue Square, and the live outdoor show *Memories of Shaoshan Chong*. Book one day ahead through “Tianxia Shaoshan” before visiting.
- Zhaoshan Scenic Area: This is the setting of “Mountain Market in Clearing Mist,” one of the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang. Climb the 700-step historic stone stairway for views over a U-shaped bend in the Xiang River. Halfway up, Zhaoshan Temple maintains its tradition of incense offerings. At dusk, head to the reed beds for backlit photos, using your phone’s HDR mode to capture details in both light and shadow.
- Shuifumiao Scenic Area: Known as central Hunan’s “Thousand Island Lake,” this lake has 34 islands. Take a speedboat ride across the waves, or stay in a wooden cabin on an island in the middle of the lake and watch the stars at night. The islands are usually quieter outside public holidays.
Two-Day, One-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Old Town Streets and the Xiang River at Night: Start the morning at Xiangtan Museum to learn about the history of the “thousand-year-old Lotus City.” Admission is free, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Next, visit the Catholic Church to admire and photograph its century-old Gothic architecture. For lunch, try shredded pork rice noodles at Shibazong Rice Noodle Shop, keeping in mind that it closes at 1 p.m. Spend the afternoon walking through Yaowan Historic and Cultural District, visiting the former Tanbao Bus Station and Wangheng Pavilion. Reach Wanlou · Youth Wharf at dusk, then enjoy the light show and illuminated Ferris wheel after dark.
- Day 2: Ink Painting and Scenic Outings: Visit Qi Baishi Memorial Hall in the morning. A guide can help you understand the works in greater depth. In the afternoon, choose according to your interests: visit Shaoshan to explore its revolutionary heritage, with a direct high-speed train taking 23 minutes, or hike in Zhaoshan Scenic Area for views of the Xiang River. Return to the city in the evening for local home-style dishes before heading home.
What to Eat in Xiangtan
Local food is known for its sour, spicy and savory flavors. The many places to eat along the streets and lanes have given rise to the saying “Eat in Xiangtan.”
- Shibazong Rice Noodles: This shop serves traditional rice noodles, with shredded pork noodles as its signature dish. Add a fried egg if you like. The noodles come in bone broth, and you can also order pan-fried dumplings with golden, crisp bottoms.
- Hong Taiyang · Time-Honored Xiangtan Food: In business for 40 years, this restaurant is known for pork trotters in a richly flavored master braising sauce. Its Da Foshou, a specialty recognized as intangible cultural heritage, has a soft texture and a sweet-savory flavor. Queues begin forming around 4 p.m. each day, so keep that in mind when planning your visit.
- Huage Restaurant: This restaurant specializes in Xiangtan home-style cooking, with options such as chicken wings braised with potatoes and sweet-and-sour pork ribs. Dishes are stir-fried quickly over high heat for a distinctive smoky wok flavor, and the dining room retains the feel of a local neighborhood restaurant.
- Fish Head with Chopped Chilies: This classic Hunan dish pairs a fresh bighead carp head with traditionally fermented chopped chilies, steamed together. Its sour, spicy flavors whet the appetite, making it a representative introduction to Xiangtan cuisine.
- Naosui Rolls: These traditional snacks, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, are soft, chewy, sweet and fragrant. They suit travelers with a sweet tooth and can be bought while exploring Yaowan Old Street.
- Dengxin Cake: This food, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, is made from glutinous rice flour, tea seed oil and white sugar. Its slender strips resemble lamp wicks, and its light sweetness makes it a good choice for a souvenir.
Accommodation and Transport
- Where to stay: Consider the areas around Yuhu Square or Bubugao in Yuhu District. This central part of the old town is convenient for sightseeing and dining, with good-value accommodation. If your itinerary includes Shaoshan, guesthouses near its scenic area are another option.
- Getting there: Take a high-speed train to Xiangtan North Station. The journey from Changsha South takes about 14–23 minutes and costs around RMB 12. Continue by taxi or bus from the station.
- Getting around: Taxi rides between attractions often cost around RMB 10. The K Tourism Route 1 bus also connects scenic areas. Shared electric bikes are another option for exploring the old town and stopping for meals along the way.
Tips Before and During Your Visit
- Allow enough time for Shaoshan and the city: Shaoshan is about an hour from central Xiangtan each way. If time is limited, choose one based on your interests. To visit both, allow two days and one night to avoid rushing between them in a single day.
- Check opening hours: Many Shibazong Rice Noodle Shop branches close at 1 p.m., so go early. Qi Baishi Memorial Hall and Xiangtan Museum are usually closed on Mondays; confirm their opening arrangements before setting out.
- Watch for sales pitches: People offering “free guided tours” near attractions may use them to sell souvenirs. If someone pressures you to buy digital photo files at the bronze statue photo spot, you can firmly refuse. Taxi drivers may receive commissions for recommending “specialty restaurants,” so choose carefully.
- Dress for walking and hot weather: Places such as Zhaoshan and Wanlou involve plenty of walking and uphill sections, so wear comfortable flat shoes. Summers are hot and humid; prepare for the heat and protect yourself from the sun.
