Yueyang travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 29

Travel in Yueyang centers on Dongting Lake scenery, historic buildings and food in the city's streets and lanes. Climb Yueyang Tower, watch the sunset by the lake, then try freshwater fish and barbecue to experience different sides of the city.

  • Yueyang Tower: One of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan, it offers sweeping views of vast Dongting Lake. Admission is 70 yuan. If you book the recitation activity in advance and recite the complete text of *Record of Yueyang Tower* within five minutes, admission is free.
  • Baling Square: Facing Dongting Lake, the square features a large sculpture depicting Hou Yi slaying the Ba Snake. Come in the evening to watch the sunset cast orange light across the water.
  • Bianhe Street: Beside Yueyang Tower, this traditional-style street has stone paving and red lanterns, making it a good setting for period-style photos. Snacks sold along the street include Yueyang shrimp cakes and sweet glutinous rice cakes fried in sugar syrup.
  • Dongting South Road Historic and Cultural District: Cishi Pagoda, old wharves and small artsy shops preserve the character of old Yueyang. With fewer visitors and a quiet atmosphere, the area is pleasant for walks and well suited to retro or film-style photography.
  • Nanhu Park: Set around an urban lake, this park is also a place where local residents relax. A greenway runs for more than 20 kilometers around the lake, and shared electric bikes are available to rent for lakeside rides.
  • Zhonghua Giant Panda Park: The park has 10 giant pandas, and the 68-yuan admission fee includes the shuttle. Visit early in the morning, when the pandas are usually more active; they may settle down to rest after 11 a.m.
  • Junshan Island: Reached by boat, the island has an admission fee of about 78 yuan. Cultural sights include Xiangfei Temple and Liu Yi Well, which can be explored alongside Dongting Lake's natural scenery. It suits visitors interested in history, culture and lake views.

Suggested Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Main City Sights): Visit Yueyang Tower in the morning for lake views and an introduction to local history and culture. Walk to Bianhe Street for snacks at lunchtime. In the afternoon, explore the Dongting South Road Historic and Cultural District and take photos at Cishi Pagoda. Head to Baling Square in the evening to watch the sunset over Dongting Lake. For dinner, try Yueyang barbecue around Paotaishan or Nanhu Avenue.
  • Day 2 (Nature and Leisure): Visit Zhonghua Giant Panda Park as early as possible in the morning. Return to Nanhu Park in the afternoon for a lakeside bike ride, or visit Yueyang Museum to learn about Dongting culture. Leave in the early evening.

Local Food Guide

Yueyang's food combines the bold, spicy flavors of Hunan cuisine with freshwater produce from the lake region. Barbecue, fish banquets and everyday breakfasts are good places to start.

  • Yueyang Barbecue: A local late-night staple, with specialties including grilled beef fat, grilled crayfish tails and chicken feet with ginger and chili. Flavors are generally rich and spicy. Long-established local restaurants such as Sanmao Barbecue and Dongdan Barbecue are options to try.
  • Baling Fish Banquet: Different fish from Dongting Lake are prepared using a variety of cooking methods to create a full banquet. One dish, huitou fish hotpot, is known for its boneless fish and milky, flavorful broth.
  • Yueyang Rice Noodles: Try these for breakfast, served in a savory, spicy bone broth. Other local noodle dishes include dry-tossed noodles with stir-fried pork and chilies, and eel noodles, both with a pleasantly chewy texture.
  • Dongting Lake Specialties: Local dishes include scrambled eggs with icefish, culter fish with pickled chilies, and handmade fish ball soup. Look for restaurants in old streets and lanes frequented by residents, where prices are usually more affordable.
  • Local Snacks: Try Huarong rice dumplings, egg-coated glutinous rice cakes, Sanmei mung bean cakes and brown sugar steamed buns. These are sold on Bianhe Street and in the old streets and lanes.

Accommodation and Transport Guide

  • Where to Stay: Staying near Baling Square or Yueyang Tower puts the main sights within walking distance, with convenient dining and transport options. For a lower accommodation budget, consider the area around Dongmaoling Pedestrian Street, which has plenty of shops, restaurants and affordable guesthouses.
  • High-Speed Rail: The journey to Yueyang East Station takes about 50 minutes from Wuhan or 30 minutes from Changsha. From the station, take bus 55 into the city or a taxi for about 20–30 yuan.
  • Getting Around: The city's sights are fairly close together, and taxi rides to most attractions cost less than 10 yuan. Shared electric bikes are another option for exploring along Dongting Lake or Nanhu Lake.

Travel Tips

  • Booking Free Admission Through Recitation: Yueyang Tower's free-admission recitation activity for *Record of Yueyang Tower* has limited daily places. Booking usually opens at times such as 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Reserve in advance through “岳阳楼智能背记” and bring your ID card.
  • Choosing Tourist Services: Check low-priced private boat trips and unofficial guide services offered outside attractions carefully to avoid scams.
  • Clothing and Photos: Lakeside winds can be strong, and temperatures can vary noticeably between morning and evening. Carry a light jacket. For period-style photos at Yueyang Tower or Bianhe Street, consider a plain-colored long dress or hanfu.
  • Ordering Food: Yueyang food is considered particularly spicy even within Hunan. If you are not used to spicy food, clearly request “very mildly spicy” or “not spicy” when ordering to reduce the chance of stomach discomfort.
