Yancheng is known for its wetland ecology and local cuisine. An itinerary can combine the Milu Deer Reserve, urban neighborhoods, and local snacks.
- China Milu Park: A 5A-rated scenic area and Asia’s largest milu deer reserve. Take a sightseeing bus into the free-range area to feed the deer up close and watch them move around the tidal flats.
- Yellow Sea Forest Park: Home to one of the larger metasequoia forests on the plains of eastern China, with leaves turning red in autumn. You can take a small forest train or rent a bicycle to explore the woods.
- Holland Flower Sea: The park features windmills, a European-style church, and flower fields, making it ideal for sightseeing and photos. Lilies bloom from September to November.
- China Maritime Salt Museum: This specialized museum offers a comprehensive look at maritime salt culture. Its exterior resembles a salt crystal and helps visitors understand the origin of Yancheng’s name.
- Yanzhen Water Street: Built along the Chuanchang River, this neighborhood is known for its white walls and dark gray tiled roofs. It is quieter during the day; in the evening, you can see red lanterns lighting up after dark and take a traditional sculling boat ride.
- Zhulin Grand Hotel: Admission is free. Inside, old Yancheng streetscapes from the 1980s and 1990s have been recreated, with local snacks and nostalgic objects. It is a good place to browse and eat at the same time.
Suggested Itineraries
- Relaxed two-day, one-night option:
- Day 1: Visit the China Maritime Salt Museum in the morning, then have snacks and take photos at Zhulin Grand Hotel at noon. Stroll through Yandu Park in the afternoon, explore Oufeng Flower Street and see the night scenery in the evening, then take a sightseeing boat at Yanzhen Water Street at night.
- Day 2: Get an early start and drive to Dafeng District. Take a sightseeing bus and feed the milu deer at China Milu Park in the morning, then take photos at Holland Flower Sea in the afternoon before heading back in the evening.
- In-depth three-day, two-night option:
- Day 1: Visit the China Maritime Salt Museum, Yancheng Museum, and Zhulin Grand Hotel in the city, then go to Yanzhen Water Street and the Farmers’ Street night market in the evening.
- Day 2: Visit China Milu Park in the morning and Holland Flower Sea in the afternoon. You can stay in Dongtai or Dafeng overnight.
- Day 3: Head to Yellow Sea National Forest Park for a cycling trip. In autumn, you can see the metasequoia forest change color, then return in the afternoon.
Local Specialties to Try
- Dongtai Fish Soup Noodles: A Yancheng intangible cultural heritage dish. Fish bones and eel bones are simmered for several hours to make a milky-white broth, served with toppings such as crispy eel or pork kidney. It is also a common local breakfast.
- Yancheng Egg Pancake: A popular street breakfast made by brushing a freshly cooked pancake with sweet chili sauce and wrapping it around a youtiao, or fried dough stick. The texture is soft. Old shops near residential neighborhoods are also worth trying.
- Yancheng Eight Bowls: A local banquet selection featuring dishes such as braised glutinous rice balls, steamed egg cake, and stewed pork skin. Most are Huaiyang-style home dishes served with plenty of broth or sauce, and portions are generous.
- Jianhu Lotus Root Starch Dumplings: Made with a soft, chewy lotus root starch wrapper and a sweet nut filling, then served in osmanthus honey soup. They make a lightly sweet dessert after a meal.
Accommodation and Transport Guide
- Where to stay: Consider staying near Yancheng Railway Station, Yanzhen Water Street, or Baolong Plaza in the city center, where dining, shopping, and transport are convenient and there are many hotels to choose from. Accommodation usually costs about 150–300 yuan per person. If you plan to visit the milu deer in Dafeng the next day, you can also stay near Dafeng or Dongtai to reduce the morning travel time.
- Intercity transport: Take a high-speed train to Yancheng Railway Station, then use a shared electric bike or take a taxi. Taxi fares are usually just over 10 yuan. You can also fly to Yancheng Nanyang Airport.
- Getting around the city: Attractions in the city center are relatively close together, so you can ride an electric bike or take a taxi. China Milu Park, Yellow Sea Forest Park, and Holland Flower Sea are far apart, so driving or hiring a car is more suitable.
Travel Tips
- Avoid peak times: Zhulin Grand Hotel and popular egg pancake shops may have queues during meal times, so consider visiting between 2 and 4 p.m. China Milu Park opens at 8:30 a.m.; arriving then may offer more active deer and shorter waits.
- Check opening hours: The China Maritime Salt Museum, Yancheng Museum, and New Fourth Army Memorial Hall are closed on Mondays. Recheck before traveling and confirm whether free reservations with an ID card are required.
- Prepare for the outdoors: Wetlands and forest parks have many mosquitoes, so bring insect repellent and wear lightweight long trousers. Coastal and tidal-flat areas can be windy, with temperature differences between morning and evening, so bring a light jacket.
- Seeing red-crowned cranes: Wild red-crowned cranes may not yet have arrived in large numbers in October, so visitors mainly see captive cranes. If you hope to see large groups of wild red-crowned cranes, consider visiting the Red-Crowned Crane Wetland Ecotourism Area after November.
