Wuxi combines Jiangnan water towns, classical gardens, and Taihu Lake scenery, making it well suited to a relaxed three-day, two-night itinerary.
- Huishan Ancient Town: This Jiangnan water town is free to enter and preserves 108 ancestral halls from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is also home to the Jiangnan garden Jichang Garden and the Second Spring Under Heaven. Stroll along the old streets and sample local snacks.
- Yuantouzhu: A famous Taihu Lake scenic area, with boat rides and shuttle buses included in the admission ticket. In spring, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms; in winter, watch red-billed gulls; and in autumn, take in Taihu sunsets and caramel-colored redwoods. The lake offers wide-open views.
- Nanchang Street: This district stretches along the Grand Canal and retains much of its traditional waterways character. After the lanterns come on at dusk, the area becomes especially charming. You can take a sculling boat to view the scenery on both banks, and many local snacks are concentrated nearby.
- Lingshan Grand Buddha: Home to the world's tallest bronze Buddha statue, this scenic area also includes the Brahma Palace and the Nine Dragons Bathing the Buddha performance. The peaceful atmosphere is suitable for worship, sightseeing, and relaxation.
- Nianhua Bay: Known for its Tang-style architecture and Zen-inspired landscapes, it is ideal for an afternoon visit followed by a light show and evening performances. You can also experience the morning bells and evening drums at local guesthouses.
- Liyuan Garden: Built beside Lihu Lake, this garden has an elegant layout of pavilions and waterside halls and tends to be less crowded. In the evening, stroll along the garden paths and admire the reflections of Lihu Pagoda and the sunset by the lake.
Classic Three-Day, Two-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Old Jiangnan Town and Canal Night Views

- Evening: Walk to Nanchang Street and Qingming Bridge to enjoy the Grand Canal at night. Take a boat past the lights along the banks, then have a bowl of Kaiyang wontons.
- Day 2: Taihu Lake Scenery and Sunset Over the Water

Wuxi's Must-Try Local Foods
Wuxi cuisine is generally on the sweet side, with flavors that are often sweet first and salty afterward. If you are not used to sweet dishes, ask the restaurant to use less sugar when ordering.
- Wuxi xiaolongbao: Thin-skinned steamed buns filled with plenty of soup and fresh, sweet filling, these are one of the city's signature snacks.
- Magnolia cakes: Glutinous rice wrappers are fried until golden and filled with tender meat, creating a soft, chewy texture with a crisp outer layer.
- Wuxi sweet-sauce pork ribs: Known for their rich sauce color and sweet fragrance, the ribs are stewed until tender and the meat comes easily off the bone.
- Taihu Lake's Three Whites: White fish, white shrimp, and silverfish. Steaming preserves their natural freshness well, making them common signature dishes around Taihu Lake.
- Huishan tofu pudding: Savory tofu pudding served with soy sauce, dried shrimp, and seaweed. Its smooth texture makes it a common snack in Huishan Ancient Town.
- Silver-thread noodles: These fine noodles are usually served in a rich, fresh chicken broth. Smooth and easy to eat, they make a comforting main dish.
Accommodation and Transportation Tips
- Where to stay: Consider staying near Sanyang Square or Nanchang Street. These areas are in the city center near metro interchange stations, making it convenient to reach the main sights, explore old streets, and dine at night. If you plan to visit Nianhua Bay for its evening views on the second day, you can also stay nearby for one night.
- Getting around: If arriving by high-speed rail, Wuxi Railway Station is the better choice because it is closer to the city center. Traveling to downtown from Wuxi East Railway Station takes longer. Most city attractions can be reached by metro, while more distant sites such as Yuantouzhu and Lingshan are better reached by taxi or scenic-area shuttle bus.
Travel Tips
- Tickets: The main streets of Huishan Ancient Town are free to enter, but heritage areas such as Jichang Garden require a combination ticket. Confirm which areas are covered before buying.
- Boat schedules: When visiting Yuantouzhu, check the last boat departure, usually around 4:30 p.m. Once you miss it, you cannot reach the island.
- Closing days: Some museums and exhibition halls are closed on Mondays, so confirm opening hours before setting out.
- Mosquitoes and sun protection: Mosquitoes are common along Taihu Lake and in garden areas, while UV levels remain strong in autumn. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.
