Changzhou travel guide

Changzhou has four distinct seasons, with noticeable temperature differences between morning and evening in spring and autumn, so bring a jacket when sightseeing on foot. Changzhou combines theme parks, lake and mountain scenery, and Jiangnan-style streets and alleys. The following itinerary works well for a 3-day, 2-night trip.

  • China Dinosaur Park: A large dinosaur-themed amusement park with thrilling rides and family-friendly interactive areas. It suits couples, friends, and families, and a full day is recommended.
  • Qingguo Lane: Known as “the foremost lane of Jiangnan scholars,” it features white walls, dark tiled roofs, and waterways, with former residences of notable figures and cultural and creative shops along the way. It is ideal for a leisurely walk.
  • Tianning Temple: An ancient temple founded during the Tang dynasty. The Tianning Pagoda is 153 meters tall, and you can look out over Changzhou from the top. Temple admission is free, but the pagoda requires a separate ticket.
  • Hongmei Park: Located beside Tianning Temple, this is a long-established garden open free of charge. Wenbi Pagoda and Hongmei Pavilion retain a classical charm. The park is pleasant for an evening stroll, when you can also enjoy reflections on the water.
  • Changzhou Cultural Plaza: Made up of futuristic geometric buildings, it takes on a striking layered appearance when illuminated at night. It is a good place to view the city at night and to create forced-perspective photos with the “giant dinosaur.”
  • Tianmu Lake and Nanshan Bamboo Sea: Both attractions are in Liyang and are best visited by car or on a day tour. You can take a boat, try clay-pot fish-head soup, then ride a cable car through the bamboo forest while enjoying the lake and mountain scenery.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Cultural walk around the city): After arriving, first visit Tianning Temple and climb the pagoda, then walk to Hongmei Park. Try Changzhou silver-thread noodles nearby for lunch. Visit Qingguo Lane in the afternoon, then head to Changzhou Cultural Plaza before evening to watch the lights come on. Have dinner around Nandajie.
  • Day 2 (Theme-park excitement or a relaxed lakeside stroll): Route A is a full-day visit to China Dinosaur Park, followed by an evening enjoying the sights at Dino Water Town. Route B is a walk around Xitai Lake’s Lanyue Bay to watch the sunset. The pace is more relaxed and suits those who want to spend less time waiting in line.
  • Day 3 (Cultural finale or nearby mountains and waters): Visit Changzhou Museum in the morning to learn about local history, then head to Banshan Bookstore to see its giant book wall. If you have enough time and are driving, visit Tianmu Lake in Liyang for fish-head soup, or stop by Baolin Temple to see its “giant pineapple” building.

Changzhou Specialties You Should Try

  • Changzhou Silver-Thread Noodles: A local specialty with more than a century of history. The noodles are fine and white, served in chicken or pork-bone broth with a soft, springy texture. Crab roe and fried fish toppings are available.
  • Crab Roe Xiaolongbao: Originating during the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty, these buns have thin skins, plenty of broth, and a pronounced crab aroma. To eat them, first make an opening at the top, then slowly sip the soup.
  • Changzhou Sesame Cake: With a history of more than 150 years, it comes in savory, sweet, and salt-and-pepper varieties. The outer layers are crisp and flaky, while the inside is soft. It is well suited to serving with tea.
  • Tianmu Lake Clay-Pot Fish-Head Soup: A signature dish of Liyang, with a milky-white, rich broth that is intensely fresh without tasting fishy. The fish-head meat is plump and tender.
  • Changzhou Tofu Soup: Commonly eaten for breakfast locally, this soup has a lightly thickened texture and is served with shredded tofu, duck blood, shredded dried tofu, and crispy soybeans. It is savory, fresh, and smooth, and pairs well with sesame cake.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

  • Where to stay: Consider staying around the Cultural Palace commercial area or Qingguo Lane. Metro Line 1 passes through these areas, making it convenient to reach attractions and shopping centers, and there are plenty of nearby dining options. When visiting the dinosaur park, you can also stay near the attraction, where family facilities are relatively comprehensive.
  • Getting around: High-speed trains arrive at Changzhou Railway Station or Changzhou North Railway Station. From either station, transfer to the metro to reach the main parts of the city. The urban area is not large, so combining the metro with taxis is convenient.
  • Money-saving benefit: Visitors from outside the city can follow “Enjoy Changzhou” to apply for an exclusive transportation QR code, allowing free rides on buses and the metro.

Itinerary Notes

  • Confirm tickets in advance: Before visiting attractions such as China Dinosaur Park, check the official platform for the day’s operating hours, evening-session arrangements, and visitor levels so you can adjust your plans.
  • Wear comfortable clothes: Attractions such as Qingguo Lane and Hongmei Park are best explored on foot. A day’s itinerary may involve a lot of walking, so sports shoes are recommended.
  • Pagoda visit: The view from Tianning Pagoda is wide open, but if the wait is too long or weather conditions are poor, you can instead view the pagoda’s reflection from Hongmei Park.
  • Allow for midday breaks: Some garden attractions, such as Weiyuan, may close temporarily at noon. Avoid this period when planning your visit.
