Yantai's coast can be windy in October, with cool mornings and evenings. Pack warm, windproof clothing.
October is Yantai's low season, with fewer visitors. It is also a good time to enjoy sea views and seafood.
- Yangma Island: Known as the “Maldives of northern China,” the island has clear blue waters on sunny days. Rent an electric scooter to explore, stopping at Qinfeng Cliff and Zhang Island, then watch the sunset at Lianhua Xizhao.
- Yantai Hill: The birthplace of the city, this hill is surrounded by the sea on three sides and retains a collection of historic consulate buildings. Climb the hilltop lighthouse for views over Zhifu Bay, with red-tiled buildings and green trees set against the sea.
- Fisherman's Wharf: Colorful European-style buildings and railway tracks extending into the sea give this waterfront a fairy-tale feel. Arrive in the early evening to watch the sunset, then stay as dusk deepens and the lights come on to photograph the changing views.
- Golden Beach: This long stretch of golden shoreline has fine, soft sand. Stop for photos at the Lonely Whale sculpture by the coast, and watch the setting sun turn the sea orange.
- Chaoyang Street: Known for its century-old European-style buildings, this street offers a glimpse into Yantai's history as a trading port. Creative shops and cafés line the street, making it a pleasant place for a stroll with stops for food and drinks.
- Time Tower: This seaside art building has a distinctly futuristic design. Its quiet top-floor Sky Library offers sweeping views of the beach.
Suggested Classic 4-Day, 3-Night Itinerary
- Day 1 (Old Town Walk): Arrive in Yantai and check into your hotel, then climb Yantai Hill in the afternoon for sea views. Stroll along Chaoyang Street and have some apple juice in the early evening, then head to Suochengli to see the old town lit up at night.
- Day 2 (Island Scenery): Spend a full day exploring Yangma Island. Set off in the morning and rent an electric scooter to ride around the island. Start at Qinfeng Cliff for views of the cliffs and sea, then head to Lianhua Xizhao in the afternoon and wait for sunset over the water.
- Day 3 (Romantic Coast): Photograph the European-style buildings at Fisherman's Wharf in the morning. In the afternoon, walk along Golden Beach, enjoy the sea views and stop near the Lonely Whale sculpture. Head to Housha Square in the early evening to watch the sunset.
- Day 4 (Leisurely Sightseeing): Visit Time Tower in the morning to admire its architecture, or head to Seal Bay at Dongpaotai to feed young seals. Buy local specialties in the afternoon before heading home.
Yantai Specialties
Jiaodong seafood and local snacks offer two ways to explore Yantai's food. Fit tastings into your itinerary.
- Sea Intestines over Rice: A signature Yantai dish, this combines crisp, tender sea intestines and a savory sauce with rice for a crunchy texture and rich flavor.
- Spanish Mackerel Dumplings: These dumplings can be as large as your palm, with a tender, juicy fish filling. They are a good choice for anyone who enjoys fresh fish flavors.
- Yantai Menzi: This street snack is recognized as municipal-level intangible cultural heritage. Sweet potato starch is cooked into a jelly, then pan-fried until crisp on both sides while remaining soft inside. It is served with mashed garlic, sesame paste and shrimp oil.
- Sea Cucumber with Scallions: A representative dish of Jiaodong-style Shandong cuisine, it features wild spiny sea cucumber from Bohai Bay stir-fried with scallions. The sea cucumber is tender and springy, with a pronounced scallion aroma and a rich, savory flavor.
- Guangxing Orchard Apple Juice: Choose freshly squeezed apple juice or apple ice cream, with affordable prices and generous portions. The sweet-tart flavor is refreshing after a rich meal, and you can take a photo as a keepsake.
Where to Stay
- Zhifu District / Yantai Railway Station Area: Yantai Hill, Chaoyang Street and Suochengli are nearby, putting old town sights within walking distance. There are plenty of dining options and convenient transport links. This area suits visitors who enjoy neighborhood walks and local food.
- Laishan District / Fisherman's Wharf Area: No. 1 Bathing Beach and Moon Bay are nearby, with coastal scenery for watching sunrises and sunsets. Yangma Island is also relatively close. This area suits visitors looking for a sea-view room.

Transport Guide
- By Air: From Yantai Penglai International Airport, take an airport bus into the city, or choose a taxi or ride-hailing service. The drive takes about 40 minutes.
- By High-Speed Rail: Yantai Railway Station is the older station, close to the old town sights in Zhifu District and within walking distance of Yantai Hill. Yantai South Railway Station is relatively closer to Laishan District and Yangma Island, with buses into the city. Yantai has no metro, so plan public transport connections using buses.
- Getting Around: Attractions are relatively close together, making taxis convenient. You can also take the No. 17 double-decker bus along the coast.
Tips for Visiting in October
- What to Pack: Temperatures vary considerably between day and night by the sea, and wind and waves can be strong. Pack a light jacket, a windproof jacket, a hat and a scarf to stay comfortable during prolonged exposure to the wind.
- Sun and Mosquito Protection: UV protection is still needed by the sea. Bring sunscreen, a sun hat and sun-protective clothing. Carry insect repellent if you plan to visit areas with plenty of vegetation.
- Getting Around Yangma Island: Entry to the island is free, and no boat trip is needed. If you rent an electric scooter, keep an eye on the remaining battery charge, as the island has many slopes. Traffic restrictions may apply in the Houhai area during public holidays, so check arrangements before setting out.
- Buying Seafood: Buy dried seafood at large supermarkets or established local restaurants, and be cautious of sales pitches from roadside stalls near attractions. If you buy seafood at a market and have it cooked for you, confirm the price, weight and cooking charges first.
- Weather and Plans: Check the forecast before departure. Clear blue sea views are more likely on sunny days, while overcast weather can make them less vivid. If the weather is unsuitable for seaside activities, visit an indoor museum or winery instead.
