Tai'an offers both mountain scenery and a taste of city life. Mount Tai ranks first among China's Five Great Mountains, and the tradition of imperial Fengshan ceremonies is an important thread in local history. Shandong cuisine adds a distinctive flavor to the trip. The following guide covers itineraries, climbing routes, food and accommodation.
-
Dai Temple
This palace-style complex was used for imperial sacrifices. It preserves Han-dynasty cypresses and Tang-dynasty scholar trees and is renowned alongside the Forbidden City and the Temple of Confucius.
-
Puzhao Temple
This ancient temple dates to the Six Dynasties period and features red walls, dark roof tiles and gnarled old pines. Its Five-Tone Stone produces pleasant sounds when struck.
-
Tai'an Old Street
This traditional-style district offers a wide range of food and snacks, plus a musical fountain at night. It is a good place to relax after climbing Mount Tai.
-
Old County Government Courtyard
The courtyard preserves Ming- and Qing-dynasty buildings and brings together local Tai'an snacks, offering a chance to sample food while learning about local culture.
-
Dongping Lake
The lake and surrounding hills have an expansive feel reminiscent of the coast in northern China. The area is well suited to lakeside drives and shoreline photography.
Classic 2-Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive in Tai'an in the morning and visit Dai Temple to learn about its history as an imperial temple. Spend the afternoon in the city sampling local dishes. In the early evening, head to Hongmen or Tianwai Village at Mount Tai. Depending on your fitness, you can climb overnight to see the sunrise, or choose a daytime hike to the summit instead.
- Day 2: Watch the sunrise from the summit, then visit the Wuyue Duzun stone inscription, which proclaims Mount Tai's supremacy among the Five Great Mountains. Continue to Tianjie and Bixia Temple in the morning. Around noon, take the cable car and bus down to ease the strain on your knees. In the afternoon, explore the Republic-era streets at Taishan Xiucheng or sample snacks on Tai'an Old Street before heading home.
Choosing Between 3 Mount Tai Climbing Routes
- Classic Hongmen hiking route: Pass through Hongmen, Wanxian Tower, Zhongtianmen, the Eighteen Bends and Nantianmen before reaching Jade Emperor Peak. The route has about 7,800 steps and takes 4–6 hours on foot. It suits younger visitors and those who want the full climbing experience or an overnight ascent to watch the sunrise.
- Easier Tianwai Village route: Take a scenic-area bus from Tianwai Village to Zhongtianmen for CNY 35, then a cable car to Nantianmen for CNY 100. This route reduces walking while still allowing you to enjoy the summit scenery, making it suitable for visitors traveling with older adults or children, or anyone with limited stamina.
- Taohuayu route: This route offers peaceful surroundings and relatively few visitors, with cable cars available for both the ascent and descent. Consider it if you have visited Mount Tai before or want to avoid dense crowds.
Local Food to Try in Tai'an
-
Pian'ai Stir-Fried Chicken
A stir-fried chicken restaurant popular with local diners. Its dry-fried chicken has a fragrant, browned exterior and tender, firm meat, with a spicy, numbing flavor.
-
Yi Rong Cheng
Serves affordable Sichuan-style snacks, including fried chicken that is crisp outside and tender inside, and potatoes with crisp surfaces and soft centers.
-
Guohua San Soup Restaurant
This long-established breakfast spot makes san soup with beef-bone broth. It can be paired with 789 types of staple foods, and CNY 8 buys a filling meal.
-
Tiandi Home-Style Cooking
Offers generous portions of affordable home-style dishes. The fish with garlic paste is tender with no fishy taste, and the eggplant is sweet and sour. It is a popular choice for local group meals.
-
Lu Cai Gen
This Shandong cuisine chain is also popular with local diners. Stir-fried chicken is a specialty, and the sweet-and-sour pork is tangy and appetizing.
Choosing Where to Stay
- Near Hongmen / Tianwai Village: Accommodation here is close to the climbing entrances, making it convenient for overnight climbs or early starts. There are plenty of dining options nearby, and taxis to the high-speed railway station are easy to arrange. Consider Magnotel (Hongmen branch) or Jinjiang Inn (Taishan Avenue branch).
- Wanda Plaza / City Center: This area has plenty of dining, shopping and leisure facilities, with good-value accommodation. It suits visitors who do not need to catch an early bus. Taxi rides from here to the attractions take less than 15 minutes.
- Nantianmen / Tianjie (Summit): Stay here if you want to spend the night on the mountain and have easy access to sunrise viewing spots. Rooms are expensive, at CNY 1,200–1,500 each, and should be booked well in advance during peak season. Consider Shenqi Hotel or Xianju Hotel.
Practical Travel Tips
- Ticket reservations: Mount Tai admission costs CNY 115 in peak season and CNY 100 in the low season, with half-price tickets for students. Book in advance under your real name through the Mount Tai scenic area's official reservation channels, then scan your ID card at entry. Tickets can be scarce during holidays.
- Weather and equipment: Check the forecast before your trip, as the sunrise is usually difficult to see on overcast days. The summit is 8–10°C colder than the base and can be windy. Bring a shell jacket or light down jacket, shoes with good grip and trekking poles.
- Supplies along the way: There are plenty of supply stops, so you do not need to carry excessive amounts of water. Bottled water costs CNY 2–3 below Zhongtianmen and slightly more above it, with prices generally affordable. If you need to rent a coat, wait until you reach the summit to reduce what you carry uphill.
- Getting down: Consider taking the cable car and bus down, as a long downhill walk can put considerable strain on your knees. After an overnight climb and sunrise viewing, try to take the cable car between 7 and 8 a.m. to avoid the busiest queues.
- Transport from the station: After arriving by high-speed train at Tai'an Station, take Tourist Bus Route 1 or a taxi to Hongmen. Be cautious of low-fare offers from unlicensed drivers outside the station, as they may take you to shopping outlets.
