Liaocheng travel guide

Known as the “Water City North of the Yangtze” and the “Ancient Canal Capital,” Liaocheng has a relaxed pace of life and modest everyday costs. Dongchang Lake surrounds the old town, weaving water and streets together in a setting well suited to an unhurried weekend or short holiday.

  • Guangyue Tower: Standing at the center of the old town, this tower was built in the seventh year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming dynasty, using an all-timber mortise-and-tenon structure. Climb up for views of the old town and surrounding waterways. The Kangxi and Qianlong emperors also visited and wrote poems here.
  • Dongchang Lake: The largest urban lake north of the Yangtze is free to visit. You can cycle along the shore or take a sightseeing boat. In the evening, head to the Twenty-One-Arch Bridge to watch the sunset and its reflection on the lake.
  • Shanxi–Shaanxi Guild Hall: Built by merchants from Shanxi and Shaanxi during the Qing dynasty, the hall rewards a close look at its architecture and wood, brick and stone carvings, which have earned it the nickname “Museum of Ancient Architecture.”
  • China Canal Culture Museum: China’s first major museum devoted to canal culture holds more than 10,000 canal-related artifacts and uses digital technology to recreate the busy days of grain transport along the canal.
  • Linqing Dongwan Garden: Located in Linqing, this garden features Suzhou-style pavilions and waterside terraces. Evening light shows, along with acrobatic and traditional opera performances, make it an option for a night out.
  • Jingyang Ridge: Located in Yanggu County, this site is associated with the origins of the story of Wu Song fighting a tiger. Sand dunes and dense woods recreate the setting described in the novel, and the scenic area stages a live-action performance of *Wu Song Fights the Tiger*.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Old Town Streets and Sunset by the Lake
    • Morning: After arriving in Liaocheng, visit the “Lucky Red Gate” at the old town’s south gate, then climb Guangyue Tower for an overview of the old town’s layout.
    • Afternoon: Explore the old town on foot and examine the architectural carvings at the Shanxi–Shaanxi Guild Hall. Alternatively, visit the China Canal Culture Museum to learn about the history of communities along the canal. Plan around its Monday closure.
    • Early evening: Enjoy the orange glow of sunset over Dongchang Lake from the Twenty-One-Arch Bridge or Huguang Sunset Corner.
    • Evening: Have dinner in the old town, then browse Iron Pagoda Night Market or take an evening cruise on a traditional decorated boat on Dongchang Lake to see the lights reflected in the water.
  • Day 2: Historic Buildings and Leisurely Neighborhood Walks
    • Morning: Head to Yuxin Street early for a breakfast of guada and Gaotang soft tofu, then visit the Liaocheng Iron Pagoda and Huguo Longxing Temple.
    • Afternoon: Stroll along Mishi Street, stopping at retro cafés and craft workshops. Another option is Haiyuan Pavilion, where you can learn about the book-collecting traditions of one of the Qing dynasty’s four great private libraries.
    • Evening: Walk along Dongchang Lake, try local Shandong dishes and enjoy a slower pace by the water.
  • Day 3: A Side Trip or a Relaxed Departure
    • Option A (Linqing): Drive or hire a car to Linqing, about an hour away. Visit Aotouji and the Canal Customs House first, then head to Dongwan Garden in the afternoon. Stay for the performances and nighttime scenery before returning.
    • Option B (Yanggu): Visit Jingyang Ridge in Yanggu County to watch the live-action performance of Wu Song fighting a tiger and learn about the culture surrounding *Water Margin*, then begin your journey home.
    • Option C (A Leisurely Morning): Take your time getting up, cycle along Dongchang Lake and buy some Wei’s Smoked Chicken to take home before departing.

Local Food in Liaocheng

Local snacks and meals are relatively affordable. Try the following foods as your itinerary allows:

  • Liaocheng Guada: A signature local stuffed flatbread with a crisp crust. Fillings include meat or a mixture of meat and egg known as “Feng Jiao Xue.” Pair it with mung bean ball soup or spicy hulatang soup.
  • Wei’s Smoked Chicken: Also known locally as “Iron Rooster,” this smoked chicken has glossy, purplish-red skin, tender meat and soft bones, with a rich aroma as you chew. Choose vacuum-packed chicken if you want to take some home.
  • Gaotang Soft Tofu: A common breakfast choice in Liaocheng, this silky tofu is served with a special savory sauce, sesame paste, chili oil and chive blossoms. Its flavor is mainly salty and savory.
  • Liuli Balls: Golden in color and resembling glass beads, these sweet snacks are traditionally made with a hollow center and a crisp bite, with moderate sweetness. They are sold at stalls along the old town’s historic streets.
  • Bapi Guozi: Shaped somewhat like a folding fan, this fried breakfast snack tastes similar to youtiao, but has more distinct layers, with a crisp exterior and a soft interior.
  • Linqing Shixiang Noodles: This local noodle specialty is known for its wide choice of toppings. Choose from more than a dozen accompaniments to create different combinations of flavors.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Where to Stay:
    • Inside the Old Town / Near Guangyue Tower: Convenient for exploring the old town and enjoying its nighttime scenery. Early mornings bring fewer visitors and good opportunities for photos. Accommodation is relatively expensive, and the old town’s narrow lanes make driving less convenient.
    • Around Dongchang Lake: A good choice for travelers who value lake views and quiet surroundings. Hotels here are generally newer, with rooms overlooking the lake, and the museum and night market are within easy reach.
  • Near Liaocheng Railway Station / Wanda Plaza: Numerous bus routes make onward travel convenient, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. Accommodation offers good value, making this area worth considering if you are driving or traveling by high-speed rail.
  • Getting Around:
    • Arriving: The original itinerary lists Liaocheng Railway Station as the preferred arrival station for high-speed rail, describing it as close to the old town, about 10–15 minutes away by taxi. If your ticket lists Liaocheng West Railway Station, the original itinerary puts it about 10 km from the old town, or roughly 20–30 minutes by taxi. Check the station name and train type before booking.
    • Travel Within the City: Attractions are fairly close together, so you can combine walking with shared electric scooters. Taxi rides generally cost no more than RMB 10. Some parts of the old town restrict electric scooter parking; use the spots marked “P” on the map to avoid a relocation fee.

Practical Tips

  • Combined Tickets: A combined ticket for Guangyue Tower and the Shanxi–Shaanxi Guild Hall costs about RMB 40, less than buying separate tickets.
  • Opening Arrangements: The China Canal Culture Museum and Guangyue Tower are usually closed on Mondays. Ticketed attractions generally stop admitting visitors around 4:30 p.m., so plan these visits for daytime.
  • Preparing for the Lakeside: You may encounter plenty of flying insects while cycling or walking around Dongchang Lake. Consider bringing a face mask or insect repellent. Autumn mornings and evenings can be noticeably cooler, so pack a light jacket.
  • Buying Local Food: For Wei’s Smoked Chicken, look for the long-established brand’s directly operated shop on Loudong Street. Many stalls at the old town entrances advertising “freshly made specials” sell imitations, so check carefully. Buy liuli balls from a street stall to eat fresh; versions sold in shops may lack the hollow center and crisp texture.
