Weihai travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 25

Life in Weihai moves at a relaxed pace, and the waterfront is ideal for leisurely walks. May–June and September–October offer comfortable weather and relatively fewer visitors, making them useful periods to consider when planning a trip.

  • Liugong Island: This national 5A-rated attraction focuses on the history of the First Sino-Japanese War. Take a ferry to the island to visit the museum and the Dingyuan warship, with mountain and sea views along the way. Allow 3–4 hours and book before setting out.
  • Huoju 8th Street: This street slopes down toward the sea and is often called Weihai’s “Little Kamakura.” Visit before 7 a.m. or in the evening to avoid the busiest crowds and photograph the Japanese-style seaside streetscape.
  • Maotou Mountain: This is a worthwhile stop for sea views while cycling along Huanhai Road. Navigate to Viewing Platform No. 3 for views of clear water meeting coastal cliffs and rocks, with plenty of photo opportunities.
  • Naxianghai: The 2,500-meter Diamond Beach has fine, soft sand and is ideal for seaside walks. Look out for pink and purple skies in the evening, or have a coffee with sea views at Shouwangzhe Station.
  • Blueways Shipwreck: The large stranded ship is the main sight and photography subject here. Visit after 4 p.m. to photograph the hull with the light behind you. At low tide, reflections may appear on the wet sand, while the light changes around sunset.
  • Chengshantou: Known as “China’s Cape of Good Hope,” it is described in the original guide as the easternmost point of mainland China. Visit early to watch the sunrise and see waves crashing against sea cliffs.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 (City Coastline): After arriving in Weihai, visit Yuehai Park and navigate to the rocky beach on its eastern side to see the lighthouse and seaweed-thatched houses → Head to Weihai Park to see the giant Picture-in-Picture frame → Visit Xingfu Gate, one of Weihai’s landmarks → Spend the evening eating and browsing at Hanlefang Night Market.
  • Day 2 (Along Huanhai Road): Watch the sunrise at Banyue Bay → In the morning, cycle or drive along Huanhai Road to Maotou Mountain, stopping at Viewing Platform No. 2 or No. 3 → Walk along the beach at the International Bathing Beach in the afternoon → Head to Huoju 8th Street in the evening to photograph its Japanese-style streetscape → Browse Oulefang Night Market at night.
  • Day 3 (Toward Rongcheng): Drive yourself or hire a car with a driver to explore the Rongcheng coast, starting at Naxianghai Diamond Beach → Visit the Blueways Shipwreck in the afternoon to see the stranded vessel and seagulls → If time and weather allow, separately arrange an early-morning sunrise visit to Chengshantou, or ride the cable car over the sea at Motianling.

Where to Stay

  • Hanlefang / Weihai Railway Station: Close to the high-speed railway station, this area has plenty of Korean restaurants and night-market snacks, making evening meals convenient. Hotels are relatively affordable. It suits students on a budget, visitors who enjoy browsing and eating, and travelers catching a high-speed train.
  • Huoju 8th Street / International Bathing Beach: A good choice for younger visitors focused on sea views and photography. There are many guesthouses with sea views and easy beach access, though room prices rise sharply in peak season and the area gets crowded.
  • Weigao Plaza / Xingfu Gate: This central area has plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment, with reasonably convenient access to beaches and attractions. Families with children, visitors who prefer simpler travel arrangements, and first-time visitors to Weihai may want to stay here.
  • Naxianghai: Cleaner beaches and relatively fewer visitors make this a good choice for a quiet, leisurely seaside break. It is 40–50 kilometers from the city center, with limited dining and shopping options, so plan to have a car for your stay.

What to Eat in Weihai

Local food highlights include Jiaodong seafood and Korean cuisine.

  • Sea Worm Rice: One of Weihai’s signature dishes, combining crisp, tender sea worms with a sweet, savory flavor, chives, eggs, and rice.
  • Spanish Mackerel Dumplings: Roughly palm-sized, these thin-skinned dumplings are generously filled with tender, juicy fish. They are also a common dish served to guests locally.
  • Rushan Oysters: Pressure-steamed in bamboo baskets to retain their natural juices and sweetness, these oysters can be served with wasabi and soy sauce.
  • Fish Stew with Corn Cakes: Fish and corn cakes are cooked together in this savory dish, a common home-style meal along the Jiaodong coast.
  • Korean Cuisine: Weihai is close to South Korea, and Hanlefang has a wide selection of Korean restaurants. Consider barbecue, stir-fried rice cakes, spicy marinated swimming crab, and pork backbone soup for distinctive Korean flavors at relatively affordable prices.

Transport and Travel Tips

  • Choosing a high-speed railway station: Weihai Railway Station is close to Hanlefang and the city center, while Weihai North Railway Station is closer to Huoju 8th Street and the High-Tech Zone. Choose according to where you are staying. Wendeng East Railway Station is nearly an hour’s drive from the city center, with a taxi costing around RMB 80–100, so check your arrival station when booking.
  • Cycling along Huanhai Road: You can rent an electric scooter to explore the coast. Some roads around Maotou Mountain have steep slopes and frequent bends. If you have little riding experience, choose the shorter coastal loop, wear a helmet, and follow speed limits.
  • Choosing weather for coastal outings: The sea’s apparent color changes with the weather. It usually looks clearer and bluer on sunny days and grayer on overcast days. Check the forecast before setting out and schedule coastal visits for sunny days if possible.
  • Buying and eating seafood: Buy seafood at an established market and have a restaurant prepare it, or choose a chain restaurant with clearly displayed prices. Be cautious about roadside seafood stalls near attractions that actively solicit customers. Before ordering, confirm both the price and whether it is charged per jin (500 grams), per liang (50 grams), or another unit.
  • Attraction reservations: In peak season, book tickets online 1–7 days ahead for Liugong Island and Chengshantou. Buying tickets on arrival is usually difficult.
  • Timing shore foraging: Before heading to Xiaoshi Island or rocky areas to look for shellfish and other marine life, check the tide tables and aim to arrive an hour before low tide. When the tide is rising, stick to enjoying the sea views.

Special Tips for October

In mid-to-late October, daytime temperatures in Weihai are around 20°C on sunny days. Wear short sleeves or a light long-sleeved top according to your comfort. Mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler, and coastal winds can feel chilly, so bring a windproof jacket or outdoor shell. This period is no longer suitable for sea swimming, but you can still enjoy sea views, walks, and photography.
