Qingdao’s coastal scenery and red-tiled buildings complement each other, making it a good place to slow down, explore the streets on foot, or spend time by the sea. The following information covers sights, itineraries, food, accommodation, and transport.
- Zhanqiao Pier: This Qingdao landmark is known for its views of Huilan Pavilion against the sea. From November to April, you can watch seagulls and bring a little bread to feed them. At other times of year, photograph the entire pier from a distance.
- Badaguan: With streets named after eight mountain passes, this area brings together European-style buildings reflecting architectural styles from more than 20 countries, earning it the nickname “World Architecture Exhibition.” A walking route can take in Huashi Villa, the exterior of Princess Villa, and nearby No. 2 Bathing Beach.
- Xiaomai Island Park: This free park has lawns and rocky shores beside the sea. Sunset turns the water orange; if watching or photographing it is your main goal, arrive an hour beforehand.
- Laoshan Scenic Area: Enjoy mountain and sea views together here. On the Yangkou route, take the cable car up the mountain, then head to Tianyuan Viewing Platform to look out over the bay. On the Taiqing route, visit the thousand-year-old Taiqing Palace and walk along the seaside boardwalk.
- Naval Museum: Admission is free with an identity card, and visits can include boarding decommissioned warships and a nuclear submarine. The nuclear submarine requires a separate, additional reservation, so check the booking requirements when planning your visit.
- Signal Hill Park: This low hill takes about 10 minutes to climb on foot. The revolving observation deck overlooks Qingdao’s old town, with red-tiled roofs, green trees, and the sea and sky beyond.
Suggested Itineraries
- 3 days covering the main sights:
- Day 1: Walk through the old town: Start at Zhanqiao Pier, then visit St. Michael’s Cathedral and the popular photo wall on Daxue Road. Head to Signal Hill Park for sunset, then finish with a seaside stroll along Qinyu Road.
- Day 2: Explore the coast: Visit Badaguan and No. 2 Bathing Beach, then head to Xiaomai Island Park to see the sea turn orange at sunset. In the evening, enjoy the lights at May Fourth Square.
- Day 3: Museums and sea views: Visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum and sample fresh, unfiltered beer, then explore the Naval Museum before heading home.
- 5 days for a more in-depth visit:
- Follow the 3-day itinerary above, then add Day 4: A day trip to Laoshan: Set off early, choose the Yangkou or Taiqing route, and allow most of the day to explore. Day 5: Free time: Watch the sunrise at Shilaoren Beach, or visit Taitung Pedestrian Street for snacks and souvenirs.
Local Food Suggestions
Beyond seafood, Qingdao offers local dishes and street snacks.
- Sea intestine rice: This local Qingdao dish pairs tender sea intestines with rice, which absorbs the savory sauce. Kaihai and Shuangheyuan are places to try it.
- Spanish mackerel dumplings: Known for their generous size and tender, juicy fish filling, these are one of Qingdao’s signature dumplings.
- Potstickers: Pan-fried until golden and crisp, these dumplings retain a juicy filling. Zhongpin Laofangzi Potstickers is one option, with prawn and cuttlefish potstickers among its popular choices.
- Ye huntun (late-night wontons): A common late-night meal in Qingdao, these wontons are often served at barbecue stalls and enjoyed with grilled food and beer.
- Deep-fried skewers: The local version coats ingredients in batter before frying, then brushes them with a sweet, tangy, mildly spicy sauce. Prices are relatively low. Wuming Fried Skewers is popular and usually has a queue.
- Fresh, unfiltered beer: The Tsingtao Beer Museum and long-established neighborhood beer houses are places to taste freshly brewed beer.
Where to Stay
- Shinan District (near Zhanqiao Pier/Zhongshan Road): This area offers easy access to the main old-town sights, with Metro Lines 1 and 3 meeting here. It is a convenient base for the first two days of sightseeing, with a good balance of price and convenience.
- May Fourth Square/Olympic Sailing Center area: In the heart of eastern Qingdao, this area offers convenient access to the waterfront. Hotels tend to have newer facilities, and evening views are easy to enjoy, making it a good choice for travelers who prioritize accommodation quality.
- Taitung shopping district: Restaurants and snack stalls are concentrated here, everyday amenities are plentiful, and the area is lively after dark. Consider staying here if you enjoy night markets and want convenient dining and local transport.
- Laoshan District (near Shilaoren): This area offers convenient access to Xiaomai Island and Shilaoren, relatively quiet surroundings, and good sea views. Consider it if you want a sea-view room or plan to visit Laoshan.
Booking tips: Before booking a sea-view room, check its actual orientation and outlook. The sea views in promotional photos may only be visible from the side or from a distance. Guesthouses in mixed residential and commercial buildings along streets near the railway station may have noise and safety issues, so choose carefully.
Transport and Travel Tips
- Arrival and getting around: If arriving by train, consider Qingdao Railway Station for its proximity to the old town. From Qingdao Jiaodong Airport, take the metro into the city. The metro is the main option for sightseeing; you can get a digital Qindaotong transit card to use it. The old town has many slopes and one-way streets, making traffic jams and driving violations easy to encounter, so driving yourself is not recommended for sightseeing.
- Dining and buying seafood: Choose seaside food stalls near Zhanqiao Pier, May Fourth Square, and Dengzhou Road Beer Street carefully, as some may charge high markups or understate the weight of seafood. To keep seafood meals affordable, buy ingredients at local markets such as Buxi Market or Tuandao Market, then pay a shop to cook them. Before weighing, puncture the plastic bag and drain all the water.
- Attraction reservations: Book popular venues such as the Naval Museum and Tsingtao Beer Museum in advance through their official reservation channels. Last-minute bookings may be unavailable during peak season.
- Clothing and walking: In October, Qingdao has noticeable temperature differences between day and night, and the coast can be windy. Pair a short-sleeved top with a light jacket or sun-protective jacket. Wear flat shoes for the old town’s many slopes; high heels are impractical for extended sightseeing.
