Hong Kong has many mountain roads and slopes, with noticeable temperature differences between morning and evening and between indoors and outdoors. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a light jacket.

Before You Go

  • Documents: Confirm that your Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents is still valid, and that you hold a valid endorsement (either G or L). Keep the customs slip issued after crossing the border, as you may need to show it while in Hong Kong.
  • Internet: Search “Overseas Internet Access” in Alipay to buy a data package (about RMB 10 per day), or activate international roaming. Download Google Maps and MTR Mobile in advance to make route planning easier.
  • Payments: Shopping malls, convenience stores and most chain stores usually accept Alipay and WeChat Pay, but it is still advisable to carry around HK$500 for street stalls and old shops that accept cash only.
  • Clothing and essentials: Hong Kong walking routes often include mountain roads and uphill sections, so sports shoes are recommended. Shopping malls and the MTR can be heavily air-conditioned, so bring a light jacket. Also prepare a UK-style plug adapter and a power bank.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Citywalk Route

  • Day 1: Kowloon Street Life and Victoria Harbour at Night
    • Morning: Start in Mong Kok. First see Langham Place’s long escalator and the Mong Kok Footbridge, then explore Ladies’ Market and Goldfish Street to experience the everyday atmosphere of the neighborhood.
  • Afternoon: Walk or take the MTR to Yau Ma Tei to visit Yau Ma Tei Police Station. Then head to the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui for views of Victoria Harbour, and enjoy the waterfront at K11 MUSEA.
  • Evening: Take the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui Pier across the harbour. After arriving in Central, ride the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator, then return to Tsim Sha Tsui to watch the A Symphony of Lights show.
  • Day 2: Central’s Historic Streets and Victoria Peak Views
    • Morning: Starting in Central, visit Tai Kwun, the Mid-Levels Escalator and Pottinger Street in sequence, taking in the mix of historic buildings and urban street scenes.
  • Afternoon: Take the MTR to Sai Ying Pun and look for the street view where “the road ends at the sea.” Then head to Kennedy Town’s waterfront basketball court to enjoy the coastline at blue hour.
  • Dusk: Take Bus 15 from the Exchange Square Bus Terminus in Central, or ride the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak. Then follow Lugard Road for sunset and night views of Victoria Harbour.
  • Day 3: Outlying Island Relaxation or a Theme Park
    • Option A (Relax by the Sea): Take a boat to Lamma Island or Tai O to experience fishing-village life, enjoy seafood and the sea breeze, and slow down your travel pace.
  • Option B (Family Fun): Spend the day at Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park, enjoying the rides and watching the nighttime fireworks.

Hong Kong’s Must-See Attractions

  • Victoria Harbour: One of Hong Kong’s defining cityscapes. The waterfront is ideal for daytime views, while A Symphony of Lights can be seen at night. The Avenue of Stars and the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade are good viewing spots.
  • Victoria Peak: Ideal for panoramic views of Hong Kong. Go up around dusk to enjoy the sunset over Victoria Harbour, the city panorama and the night view in one visit.
  • Tai Kwun in Central: Converted from the former Central Police Station compound, it combines red-brick architecture with art exhibitions and is well suited to a walking tour of Central.
  • Hong Kong Disneyland: Relatively compact and warmly atmospheric. The Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, Hyperspace Mountain and nighttime fireworks are among the main attractions.
  • The Big Buddha on Lantau Island: A representative Buddhist site in Hong Kong. Take the Ngong Ping 360 Crystal Cabin to enjoy mountain and sea views, then climb to the top to visit and pray.
  • Kennedy Town: Known for blue-and-white streetscapes, sea views and a waterfront basketball court. It is a good place to watch the sunset and capture the urban character of western Hong Kong Island.

Local Hong Kong Food Recommendations

  • Hong Kong-style Roast Meats: Roast goose has crisp skin and juicy meat, while char siu has a honeyed aroma. Order a mixed platter at a long-established roast-meat shop.
  • Shrimp Wonton Noodles with Bamboo-Pressed Noodles: The noodles are springy, and the shrimp wontons have thin wrappers and generous filling. The clear, fresh broth is often made with dried flounder.
  • Hong Kong-style Beef Brisket: Beef brisket is slowly braised in a longtime broth until richly seasoned and tender but firm, often served with white radish. It is easy to find in Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok.
  • Hong Kong-style Curry Fish Balls: Handmade fish balls simmered in Hong Kong-style curry sauce are springy, richly flavored and mildly spicy, making them a common street snack.
  • Original Egg Waffles: Baked to order, they are lightly crisp outside and soft inside, with a clear egg aroma, making them an easy street snack.
  • Hong Kong-style French Toast: Bread coated in egg and fried, usually served with peanut butter, butter and condensed milk. It is sweet and fragrant and commonly found in cha chaan tengs.

Choosing Where to Stay

  • Tsim Sha Tsui: In the heart of Kowloon, with convenient access to the Avenue of Stars and Harbour City. Night views and shopping are concentrated here, making it suitable for first-time visitors who want to reduce commuting.
  • Central: The financial district, historic streets and city landmarks are close together. It is near the Peak Tram and SoHo; accommodation is mainly business and upscale hotels, suitable for travelers who value efficient transport.
  • Mong Kok: Dense local neighborhoods, plenty of snacks, and many budget hotels and guesthouses. It suits travelers on a limited budget who want to stay close to everyday local life.
  • Causeway Bay: Shopping malls, restaurants and retail destinations are concentrated here. If your plans often include shopping and late meals, staying here can reduce travel time to and from the hotel.

Booking Tip: Do not choose a hotel based only on the district name. Check on a map which MTR exit is closest, and whether the route includes long slopes, stairs or footbridges. These sections can significantly affect the experience when carrying luggage or traveling with older family members.

Transport and Payment Guide

  • MTR: Suitable for most trips around the city. Use MTR Mobile to check routes. Be careful not to board a first-class carriage marked in yellow, or you may be fined. Eating and drinking are prohibited inside MTR trains.
  • Star Ferry: Fares are about HK$4–5. The Tsim Sha Tsui–Central route is ideal for views of Victoria Harbour, and an evening ride lets you see both the sunset and the night scenery.
  • Tram: Trams operate only on Hong Kong Island. Board at the rear and exit at the front. The fixed fare is about HK$2.70, and the ride is good for watching the street scenes.
  • Sunset Ride: Take the H2K bus from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central and choose an open-air upper-deck seat for Victoria Harbour night views. The fare is about HK$40.
  • Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay work in most places and usually charge in RMB after currency conversion. It is still advisable to carry a small amount of Hong Kong cash.

Things to Note

  • Escalators: Stand on the right and leave the left side clear for people in a hurry.
  • Keep Your Slip: Keep the customs slip received when crossing the border, as you may need to show it during a spot check.
  • Smoking Rules: Smoke only in designated areas, such as beside orange rubbish bins. Violations may result in a HK$3,000 fine.
  • Be Careful with Solicitors: At border crossings or on the street, decline people promoting watches, bags or “day tours” to avoid counterfeit goods and other shopping traps.
  • Buying Drinking Water: Bottled water at 7-Eleven and Circle K can be relatively expensive, at around HK$10. You can also buy it at pharmacies or newsstands, or get free drinking water at McDonald’s and MTR stations.
  • Finding Toilets: Public toilets are relatively scarce on the street. Use the ToiletBuddy app to find nearby facilities; shopping malls and fast-food restaurants usually have cleaner restrooms as well.
