Baisha is located in the mountainous interior of Hainan, so bring mosquito repellent when visiting the rainforest.
Baisha, Hainan does not have the lively pace of a coastal city, but it has well-preserved tropical rainforest scenery, rare geological relics, and a distinct Li ethnic culture. It is better suited to travelers who prefer natural surroundings, light hiking, and quiet holidays.
Main Attractions
Baisha’s highlights are mainly natural ecology and ethnic villages. The attractions are not close to one another, so self-driving is more convenient. The following destinations can form the core of your itinerary:
- Bawangling National Forest Park: This is an important part of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park and a habitat of the Hainan gibbon. Walking along the forest boardwalk between 7 and 9 in the morning gives you a better chance of hearing the gibbons call. The air in the park is fresh, making it suitable for light hiking and a rainforest experience.
- Wulilu Organic Tea Garden: The tea garden is located around the Baisha meteorite crater and is an important production area for Baisha green tea. Visitors can try picking tea with a bamboo basket on their back, learn tea roasting from a tea master, or stay overnight in a homestay among the tea fields, taste Li-style fusion dishes, and enjoy the rural tea garden scenery.
- Luoshuai Village: Luoshuai Village sits at the foot of Yingge Ridge. It is a Li ethnic village and a key national rural tourism village. It is suitable for visitors who do not want a strenuous trek but would like to get close to streams and village life. You can take a light hike around Fairy Stream, visit boat-shaped houses, learn about Li brocade weaving, and in the evening experience a Li family bonfire party.
- Jiujialing Viewing Platform: This is an important place in Baisha for viewing the sea of clouds. Admission is free and it is open all day. Around early morning or sunrise, you can often see the mountains appearing and disappearing in the mist. The kapok flowering season from February to March each year is also quite distinctive. There are several parking viewpoints and toilets along the route, making stops convenient.
Itinerary Planning
A 2–3 day visit is recommended for Baisha, and the experience is smoother by self-driving. You can refer to the following route:
- Day 1: In the morning, go to Bawangling National Forest Park and hike along the rainforest boardwalk while breathing in the fresh air. In the early morning, listen for the calls of Hainan gibbons. In the afternoon, head to Jiujialing Viewing Platform to see clouds, flowers, and the sunset. Stay overnight in a rainforest villa or homestay in Luoshuai Village, listening to insects and watching the stars.
- Day 2: In the morning, visit Wulilu Organic Tea Garden to experience tea picking and tea making, and taste green tea nurtured by the soil of the meteorite crater. In the afternoon, go to the Baisha meteorite crater and learn about the geological landscape around the tea garden town. In the evening, visit the Nancha River embankment night market in the county town, taste local snacks, and feel the nighttime atmosphere of this mountain town.
- Day 3: In the morning, go to Bangxi Eld’s Deer Nature Reserve to observe Hainan Eld’s deer, which are more active around 9–10 a.m. In the afternoon, depending on your schedule, head to Hongkan Waterfall or return directly, ending your Baisha trip.

Practical Travel Tips
- Transport: Baisha’s attractions are far apart, and public transport is not very convenient. Self-driving or hiring a car is recommended.
- Climate and clothing: Daytime temperatures in the mountains are around 25–30°C, with a noticeable difference between morning and evening temperatures. Bring a light jacket. The local UV rays are strong, so prepare a sun hat and sunscreen.
- Mosquito protection and safety: There are many mosquitoes around the rainforest and streams, so bring mosquito repellent. Wear non-slip shoes and long trousers when hiking, and do not go alone into undeveloped wilderness areas.
