Changjiang is more comfortable in winter and spring, while summer and autumn are hot and often rainy in the afternoon.
Compared with Hainan’s more popular seaside cities, Changjiang is quieter. Its coastline, tropical rainforest, and Li ethnic villages still retain much of their original character. If you want to avoid heavy crowds and plan a slower-paced island trip, this is a destination worth considering.
- Qizi Bay: Located on Hainan’s west coast, it has well-preserved natural scenery and is usually divided into three areas: Dajiao, Zhongjiao, and Xiaojiao. At Dajiao, you can follow the coastal road to enjoy sea views; Zhongjiao is suitable for beachcombing and collecting shells at low tide; Xiaojiao is a good place to watch the sunset in the evening.
- Bawangling: This is one of the best-preserved core areas of tropical primeval forest in Hainan Province, and the only habitat in the world for the Hainan black-crested gibbon. The forest air is fresh, making it suitable for hiking and observing rainforest ecology.
- Wangxia Township: This area still has a strong sense of Li village life. You can combine visits to the karst cave of Huangdi Cave, the boat-shaped houses of Hongshui Village, and the Shili Gallery. It is suitable for travelers who want to learn about Li culture while also exploring nature.
- Shayutang Village: A filming location for *Back to Field*, this seaside village combines the “Mushroom House” with a fishing-village setting. The atmosphere is quiet, making it good for seaside walks and taking photos.
- Xiantian Village: Often called “Changjiang’s Little Altay,” its beach reveals an open landscape resembling grassland after the tide goes out. The light in the evening is especially good for enjoying the view. You can also try beach fishing and paddleboarding here.
Food Recommendations
Changjiang’s food is mainly based on seafood, local flavors, and Li ethnic specialties. The tastes are simple and down-to-earth, with a lively local feel.
- Wulie Suckling Goat: One of Changjiang’s signature dishes. The goat meat is tender and has only a mild gamey flavor. Served plain-boiled and dipped in sauce, it best brings out the natural taste. You can try it at restaurants in Shilu Town.
- Changhua Port Seafood: Food stalls near the pier have a stronger local atmosphere. Common seafood such as grouper, prawns, and mango clams is usually steamed or briefly boiled, highlighting the fresh sweetness of the seafood itself. Prices are generally more reasonable than in the urban area.
- Li Bamboo-Tube Rice: A traditional Li ethnic food made by roasting rice inside fresh bamboo tubes. It has a bamboo fragrance and a distinctive flavor when paired with local dipping sauces.
- Sour Bean Drink and Fried Skewers: A common combination at Changjiang night markets. The sour bean drink is sweet and tangy and helps stimulate the appetite. The fried skewers are similar to deep-fried kebabs and are usually coated with locally made sauces, making them a popular late-night snack among locals.
- Sandworm Porridge: Made with fresh sandworms, this porridge has a strong umami flavor and generous ingredients. In Changjiang, it is often eaten for breakfast or as a late-night snack.
Accommodation Suggestions
- Around Qizi Bay: If you mainly want sea views, consider seaside guesthouses (150–250 yuan/night) or resorts (300–600 yuan/night). Some places have sea-view terraces, making them suitable for family trips or travelers who want to slow down and enjoy the ocean.
- Shilu County Town: Accommodation here is more practical and offers better value for money (120–200 yuan/night). Night markets are within walking distance, making it easy to try snacks such as pickled mango and fried skewers, and to experience local nightlife.
- Li Villages in Wangxia Township: If you want a deeper experience of the Li village environment, you can stay at Li ethnic guesthouses in Sanpai Village or Hongshui Village (200–350 yuan/night). The surroundings are quiet, and the area is suitable for stargazing at night.

Practical Tips and Notes
- Transportation: Changjiang’s attractions are spread out, so self-driving or hiring a car is more convenient. High-speed rail can take you to Qiziwan Station, but after leaving the station you will still need a rental car or other transfer to reach other sights.
- Sun Protection and Warmth: The UV rays by the sea are strong, so bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Sea breezes are noticeable at night in Qizi Bay, and it can feel cool, so bring a light jacket.
- Beachcombing Tips: Before beachcombing at Qizi Bay or Xiantian Village, check the tide table in advance and go during low tide. The rocks can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and take care.
- Road Conditions in Wangxia Township: The last half hour of the route to Huangdi Cave and the Shili Gallery is mostly winding mountain road with many bends. If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare medication in advance. It is best to return before dark, as the mountain roads have no streetlights at night.
- Best Season: The climate is more comfortable from November to April, making it suitable for travel. From February to March, kapok flowers bloom along the Changhua River, adding distinctive scenery. From May to October, the weather is hotter and afternoon thunderstorms are common, but it is a good time to see the lush rainforest and enjoy mangoes.
