Lingao is warm year-round, and the sun is strong by the sea, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun when going out.
Located on western Hainan, Lingao is quieter than the island’s popular beach cities. It has preserved much of the original character of its beaches, waterfalls, fishing villages, and local food. It is well suited to a short self-drive trip at a slower pace, focused on natural scenery and county-town dining.
Below is a guide to Lingao’s sights, food, itineraries, transport, and safety tips for your trip.
Recommended Attractions
Many attractions in Lingao can be visited for free. They combine natural scenery with historical and cultural interest, and are good for relaxed walks.
- Guyin Waterfall: This is one of the larger natural waterfalls in northern Hainan and is open free of charge. The drop is about 20 meters, and it is known for its “three pools and nine bends.” You can also interact with peacocks in the scenic area. Wear non-slip shoes. The view is better if you follow the wooden boardwalk on the right side, and the whole visit takes about 30 minutes.
- Lingao Cape: A national 4A-level scenic area and the landing site of the Battle to Liberate Hainan Island. The area includes a century-old lighthouse, Liberation Park, and 7 kilometers of coastline. There are relatively few visitors, making it good for sea views and for watching the orange sunset over the water in the evening.
- Wenlan Cultural Park: A large cultural theme park with free admission. It has 87 historical-themed archways and a 1.7-kilometer corridor. It is comfortable for an evening walk and also good for photographing city and cultural scenery.
- Meixia Village: A small fishing village that has kept its natural, original look. You can get close to the sea and go tide-pooling among the reefs to look for starfish. The lighthouse at the village entrance and the stranded boats give it a strong fishing-village atmosphere, making it a good stop for those who like natural coastlines.
Local Specialties
Lingao is known as a “land of fish and rice.” In the county town’s streets and lanes, you can find many local snacks and seafood dishes, generally at reasonable prices.
- Lingao Roast Suckling Pig: One of Hainan’s four famous dishes. It is known for its crispy skin, tender meat, and fragrant bones. You can try it at Gongyuan Suckling Pig Restaurant or Shengyuan Roast Pig. First-time visitors can order half a jin, and dipping it in white sugar gives it a more local flavor. Expect to spend around 60 yuan per person.
- Lingao Chive Pancake: A common freshly fried street snack, made with batter wrapped around a whole fresh shrimp and chives. It is crispy on the outside and soft inside. Stalls on Zhongzhen Street or in the small lane opposite Wanjiahui are popular choices. Pair it with garlic vinegar to cut through the oiliness. The price is 1 yuan for 2 pieces.
- Lingao Rice Noodles: Different from rice noodles in other parts of Hainan, Lingao rice noodles come with richer toppings, often including beef jerky, sliced pork, pickled vegetables, and more than ten other condiments. The braising sauce is rich, and the sour-salty flavor is appetizing.
- Clay Kiln Food: A representative cooking style in Xinying Town. Ingredients are wrapped in foil and covered with heated earth, then baked and braised until cooked. Clay kiln chicken and clay kiln seafood are especially popular. The flavors are fresh and not heavy. It is best to reserve by phone in advance.
- Xinying Sweet Soups: A common traditional afternoon snack on local streets, with choices such as mango pomelo sago and coconut milk qingbuliang. Prices are low, and they are good for cooling down in hot weather.
Classic Itinerary Ideas
Choose a one-day or two-day itinerary depending on how long you stay. Overall, a slow self-drive pace works best.
- One-Day Trip (Classic Highlights): In the morning, go to Guyin Waterfall for fresh air and water play (about 2 hours) → Return to the county town at noon for roast suckling pig and Lingao rice noodles → In the afternoon, visit Lingao Cape for the beach and Liberation Park → Watch the sunset along the Lingao Cape coastline in the evening → Go to Zhongzhen Street for snacks at night.
- Two-Day Trip (In-Depth Slow Travel): Day 1: Visit Guyin Waterfall in the morning, have roast suckling pig at noon, go to Wenlan Cultural Park in the afternoon, and stay overnight in the county town. Day 2: Drive along the Hainan Island Ring Tourism Highway to Meixia Village for tide-pooling and to Dongying International Slow City. In the afternoon, eat clay kiln chicken and seafood in Xinying Town, then return in the evening.
Transport and Accommodation Tips
- Transport: Self-driving is recommended. Lingao’s attractions are fairly spread out, and public transport connections are not very convenient. If you take the high-speed train to Lingao South Station, you can take a taxi from the station to the county town or to the attractions. In the county town, shared electric scooters are available, but some road surfaces are uneven, so ride carefully.
- Accommodation: If you want convenient dining and transport, choose a hotel in the county town, preferably near Zhongzhen Street and local restaurants to save time. If you prefer sea sunsets, stay in a guesthouse around Lingao Cape, such as Haijiao Mengqi Wanxia Guesthouse. The beach is right outside, and the overall cost is relatively friendly.
Safety and Practical Tips
- Tide-Pooling Safety: Before going tide-pooling at Meixia Village or the Baidiebei Reserve, check the tide table in advance and try to go after the tide has gone out. When the tide rises, the seawater comes in quickly and powerfully, so return to shore in time. There are many reefs, so non-slip shoes are recommended.
- Seafood Warning: Do not eat Zhengzhi Aijie Crab if you encounter it by the sea. It contains tetrodotoxin, which cannot be removed by high-temperature cooking. Eating it by mistake may cause numbness in the hands and feet, and in severe cases, respiratory paralysis. In addition, Laopojiao snails and Baiyu snails are mostly frozen goods from northern China and are not especially worth buying.
- Sun and Mosquito Protection: Hainan has strong ultraviolet rays, so use sun protection for both waterfall and seaside activities. Rainforest environments such as Guyin Waterfall have many mosquitoes and insects, so carry mosquito repellent with you.
