Chongzuo

Chongzuo is hot and rainy in summer, so take precautions against sun exposure and mosquitoes. Located on Guangxi’s border, Chongzuo offers both karst landscapes and China–Vietnam border scenery. Compared with Guilin, it has fewer tourists and generally more manageable travel costs, making it well suited to an itinerary that combines southern borderland culture with countryside scenery.

Classic 3- to 4-Day Itinerary

• Day 1: Arrive in Chongzuo → Zhuang Ethnic Museum (learn about Huashan culture) → Taiping Ancient City (enjoy the night views and molten iron flower performance in the evening).

• Day 2: Detian Transnational Waterfall (take a bamboo raft to see the waterfall up close) → Blue Cave Coffee (a café space beside the rice fields) → Stay in Shuolong Town or Mingshi Countryside.

• Day 3: Mingshi Countryside (rent an electric scooter and ride along country roads) → Dongnayuwan Bay (take a boat tour on the Heishui River) → Return.

• Day 4 (self-driving extension): Gulongshan Grand Canyon (rafting) → Tongling Grand Canyon (see the hundred-meter waterfall) → Return.

Main Attractions

• Detian Transnational Waterfall: This is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia and the fourth largest in the world, with its water system spanning both China and Vietnam. Going in the morning is usually better for views, when the water flow is stronger. A bamboo raft lets you feel the spray up close, and you can also stop by Boundary Marker No. 53. Admission is 80 yuan, and the bamboo raft costs 48 yuan.

• Mingshi Countryside: This was a filming location for *The Journey of Flower* and is often called “Little Guilin.” The Mingshi River runs through karst peaks and fields, making it ideal for a slow ride on a rented electric scooter. In the evening, head to Xingfu Bridge to watch the sunset, when the light is softer. Entry is free, while cycling and bamboo rafting cost extra.

• Dongnayuwan Bay: Known for the beautiful scenery of the Heishui River, it is also called a “different kind of Li River.” A boat ride lets you enjoy the green hills on both banks, with flower fields, rice paddies, and Longbitan along the route. Admission is about 198 yuan; a combined land-and-water ticket is recommended.

• Taiping Ancient City: This is a reconstructed ancient city. During the day, the commercial atmosphere is quite noticeable, while the lighting effects at night are more worth seeing. From 7 to 8 pm, there is a free intangible cultural heritage “molten iron flower on water” performance, accompanied by a light show and drone performance.

• Huashan Rock Art: The Huashan Rock Art is a World Cultural Heritage Site. The cliff faces still preserve ochre-red patterns painted by the ancestors of the Zhuang people more than 2,000 years ago, and they remain clearly visible today. When touring by boat, sitting on the left side gives a better view. Admission is 90 yuan, or 45 yuan in the off-season.

Food Recommendations

• Ruan Ruyu Vietnamese Hotpot: Located near Detian Waterfall, this restaurant serves a hotpot broth that is sour, spicy, fresh, and aromatic. Its flavor is similar to tom yum but milder, so the meat does not feel greasy when cooked in it, and it is also suitable for dining with children.

• Li Biaomei Fresh-Fried Congee Hotpot: This restaurant is beside the rice fields in Mingshi Countryside. The congee base is stir-fried fresh by the chef and has a seafood umami flavor. The broth becomes richer the longer it cooks, and the setting is quite open and spacious.

• Jiangbei Roast Duck Rice Noodles: The roast duck has crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. Served with handmade rice noodles, it is a noodle shop choice often visited by locals.

• Feijie Rice Rolls: The rice sheets are smooth, the fillings are fresh, and the sauce is well balanced, making this a good option for breakfast or a snack.

• Vietnamese Chicken Rice Noodles: The broth is fairly rich, the rice noodles are smooth, and the portion of chicken is generous. This is a type of noodle dish locals often choose for breakfast.

Accommodation Tips

• Chongzuo Urban Area (Jiangzhou District): There are many types of accommodation, and prices are relatively affordable, making it a good transit base after arrival. Taxis are convenient in the city, and Taiping Ancient City and the Zhuang Ethnic Museum are not too far away.

• Shuolong Town: Close to Detian Waterfall and Mingshi Countryside, this small town has retro-style decor, and its restaurants and basic facilities are enough for everyday needs. It is a good base for planning trips to nearby attractions.

• Mingshi Countryside: The accommodations here are mostly surrounded by green hills and rice fields, with light mist often appearing in the early morning. It suits travelers who want to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Guesthouses or hotels such as Tianjian Meisu and Nali Hotel are worth considering.

Practical Tips

• Transport: Chongzuo’s attractions are spread out, so self-driving or renting a car is recommended. Renting a car from Nanning Wuxu Airport or Chongzuo South Railway Station is convenient. For public transport, you can take scheduled buses or direct shuttle buses, but timing is less flexible, so confirm departure times in advance.
• ID: Border areas may have border inspection checkpoints, so be sure to carry your ID card with you.
• Sun and mosquito protection: Summer temperatures can exceed 35°C, and UV rays are strong. Use both chemical and physical sun protection, and bring mosquito repellent.
• Detian Waterfall: The high-water season is from May to October, when the flow is more spectacular. Around 2 pm, there may be a chance to see a rainbow. When taking a bamboo raft, it is not recommended to buy items sold by Vietnamese vendors, and be sure to look after your belongings.
• Taiping Ancient City: It is best to visit at night. The commercial atmosphere is stronger during the day, while in the evening you can see the lights and the free molten iron flower performance.
• White-headed langurs: This is the only place in the world where wild white-headed langurs can be seen, but the chance of encountering them is not high. It is best to go around 9 am or after 4 pm, when the monkeys are more active as they come down the mountain to feed.
• Accommodation planning: Driving times between attractions are long, so it is not recommended to stay in just one place for the whole trip. Staying in different areas according to your itinerary helps save time on the road.
