Liuzhou travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Sep 18

Liuzhou is humid, hot, and rainy in summer, while spring and autumn are more comfortable for travel.

Liuzhou combines the everyday feel of an industrial city, karst landscapes, and the night views along the Liujiang River. Below is a relatively relaxed 3-day, 2-night itinerary, suitable as a reference for a first visit.

Day 1: Old-City Local Life and Riverside Night Views

  • Morning (Qingyun Minsheng Market): Head out early to explore Liuzhou’s morning market. From glutinous rice balls in sweet soup and colorful sticky rice to cassava dessert soup and corn juice, you can slowly sample local breakfasts and snacks along the way.
  • Afternoon (Liuhou Park + Liuzhou Museum): Start with a walk in Liuhou Park to enjoy its gardens and urban greenery; then visit Liuzhou Museum to learn about the city’s history and development. Liuzhou Museum requires advance reservation and is closed on Mondays.
  • Evening (Ma’anshan Park + Fengqinggang Night Market): Go to Ma’anshan Park around 4:30 p.m. Taking the elevator up the hill is recommended. From there, you can overlook the “Ω”-shaped bend of the Liujiang River and wait as the city lights gradually come on. In the evening, go to Fengqinggang to watch the musical fountain, with shows at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.; you can also browse the night market on the way.

Day 2: Landscapes and Industrial Memories

  • Morning (Longtan Park): Longtan Park is free to enter and rich in greenery, making it ideal for an easy walk. You can visit Jingshan, the Wind and Rain Bridge, and the crooked-neck tree in sequence, and enjoy Liuzhou’s typical karst scenery up close.
  • Afternoon (Liuzhou Industrial Museum + Water Bus): At Liuzhou Industrial Museum, see vintage locomotives and industrial-style exhibition areas, and learn about Liuzhou’s development as an industrial city. Then head to Nanchedu Pier and take the water bus for 3 yuan to tour the Liujiang River from the water.
  • Evening (Yaobu Ancient Town + Shengli Barbecue City): Yaobu Ancient Town has a strong nighttime lighting atmosphere, and you can also rent ethnic-style clothing for photos. Later at night, head to Shengli Barbecue City to try Liuzhou late-night snacks such as stir-fried luosifen and stir-fried duck feet.

Day 3: Quiet Temples and a Final Stroll Before Departure

  • Morning (Xilai Ancient Temple + Liuzhou Confucian Temple): Xilai Ancient Temple is near the Liujiang River and has a peaceful setting. Liuzhou Confucian Temple is known as the “Little Forbidden City of Guangxi,” with red walls and dark tiled roofs that show distinctive traditional architectural features.
  • Afternoon (Free Time for Food and Wandering + Departure): Before leaving, you can have another bowl of local luosifen in the city, buy specialties such as Zhuoheji pork jerky, and then depart Liuzhou at an easy pace.

Must-Try Food List

When traveling to Liuzhou, there are also many local flavors worth planning for beyond luosifen:

  • Luosifen: You can choose long-standing shops such as Jubao, Caomei, Xinyue, and Haochan. Fried egg and duck feet are common add-ons. The local spice level tends to be high, so choose mild if you do not handle spicy food well.
  • River Snail and Duck Feet Hot Pot: Feiluo Zhuang and Liu Fangfang are fairly representative choices. The duck feet are stewed until soft, and the tofu puffs soak up the broth, making the sour and spicy flavor especially appetizing.
  • Cold Tossed Beef Offal: Tianshan Beef Offal and Shunshuiwan Beef Offal are both options. The beef offal has a crisp-tender texture and is served with a sour-spicy sauce, making it a good snack.
  • Specialty Snacks: Look out for cassava dessert soup at Qingyun Market, Sister Lu’s stir-fried ice and old-fashioned sponge cake on Wuxing Street, and pressure-cooker lemongrass oysters in the night markets.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Where to Stay: For a first visit to Liuzhou, the area around Wuxing Pedestrian Street is a good first choice, with plenty of dining nearby and convenient access to different places. If you want to stay in a river-view area, look at guesthouses around Yaobu Ancient Town. If value for money matters more, consider the area near Liunan Wanda.
  • Getting Around: Arriving by high-speed rail at Liuzhou Railway Station is convenient. For short trips within the city, you can rent an electric scooter for about 30–50 yuan per day, which makes food-hopping more flexible. During holidays, taxis may get stuck in traffic, so try to avoid peak hours.
