Laibin travel guide

Laibin is hot and rainy in summer, so check the weather before playing in the water in its canyons.

Located in the heart of central Guangxi, Laibin is quieter than more popular tourist cities. Transport and dining costs are relatively budget-friendly, making it suitable for a weekend self-drive trip or a short getaway from nearby areas. Its main natural attractions are spread across the counties, while the urban area is better for easy strolling and dining.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Easy City Stroll and Local Food
    • Morning: After arriving in Laibin, start at Laibin Museum to learn about the area’s history and ethnic minority cultures. Cuiping Mountain Park is opposite the museum and works well for a walk and a rest.
  • Afternoon: Head to Pangu Culture Park to enjoy flowers by the water. You can also visit Time Island by the Hongshui River for river views and stone-carving scenery.
  • Evening: Go to Zhenghe Pedestrian Street to try luosifen, sour beef intestines, rice dumplings, and various sweet soups, and experience the city’s lively nighttime atmosphere.
  • Day 2: The Hidden Yao Mountains of Jinxiu and a Sea of Clouds
    • Morning: Set off for Jinxiu County and visit Shengtang Mountain. It is the highest peak in central Guangxi, with primeval forest and sea-of-clouds scenery. The hike requires a certain level of fitness and takes about 6–8 hours in total.
  • Afternoon: Go to Shengtang Lake and take a boat ride to see the cliffs on both banks and the emerald-green lake water. This canyon lake scenery is known as the “Little Three Gorges of Guangxi.”
  • Evening: Stay in Jinxiu County town or Guzhan Yao Village. Try a Yao-style long-table banquet and watch intangible cultural heritage performances such as climbing a blade ladder and walking across fire.
  • Day 3: Canyon Stream Trekking or a Hot Spring Break
    • Option A (Nature and Water Fun): Go to Baiya Grand Canyon in Wuxuan County. Hike along the streamside boardwalk, play in the water and trace the stream near Tiannü Sanhua Waterfall, and enjoy this cool canyon known as the “Jiuzhaigou of Guangxi.”
  • Option B (Leisure and Relaxation): Visit Xiangzhou County for Xiangzhou Hot Spring, where the spring water reaches up to 86°C and contains trace elements. After soaking, try Xiangzhou small millet cakes and beef offal hot pot.

Main Attractions

Laibin’s scenic areas are quite spread out. The following are some of its most representative highlights:

  • Jinxiu Shengtang Mountain: The main peak of the Dayao Mountains, at 1,979 meters above sea level. In May, alpine rhododendrons bloom in large clusters, and seas of clouds are common after rain. It is praised as the “Huangshan of Guangxi.”
  • Xincheng Mo Tusi Yamen: Often called the “Forbidden City of Zhuang Country,” this is a well-preserved complex of tusi administrative buildings with both historical value and cultural appeal.
  • Wuxuan Baiya Grand Canyon: A canyon scenic area with a well-preserved natural environment, dense waterfalls, and clear streams. In summer, it is suitable for hiking, stream tracing, and playing in the water.
  • Xiangzhou Hot Spring: One of the famous hot springs of central-southern China. The spring water reaches up to 86°C, and you can choose between open-air mountain pools or private bath rooms, making it ideal for a relaxing stop.
  • Jinxiu Lotus Mountain: Danxia landforms and primeval forest are interwoven here. The mountain shape resembles a lotus, with rolling peaks often wrapped in mist.

Local Food Highlights

Laibin cuisine blends Zhuang and Yao flavors with the characteristics of central Guangxi. Overall, it is appetizing, sour, and spicy:

  • Hongjie Luosifen: A popular long-running local shop in Laibin. The broth is relatively mild, and the toppings are generous. You can add duck feet, Chinese sausage, and a fried egg.
  • Fangjie Rice Dumplings: A common local snack. The rice wrappers are thin but springy, and the fillings include taro, lotus root, and more. They are usually eaten with fermented chili sauce.
  • Stir-Fried Pork Intestines with Red Fermented Rice Sour Sauce: An intangible cultural heritage dish from Wuxuan. The red fermented rice gives it a sour-spicy flavor, while the intestines have a chewy texture. It goes well with rice.
  • Vietnamese Overseas Chinese Rice Rolls: Thin rice-roll wrappers with generous fillings, served with sweet-and-sour sauce, mint, and lemon for a refreshing taste.
  • Sour Beef Intestines: Similar in form to malatang, but with a flavor of its own. The beef offal is cleaned well, and the dipping sauce is the main source of flavor.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Transport Advice: Laibin’s key attractions are spread across Jinxiu, Wuxuan, Xiangzhou, and other areas, with long distances between them. Public transport connections are not very convenient, so self-driving or hiring a car is recommended. If arriving by high-speed rail, you can first get to Laibin North Railway Station and then rent a car to visit the counties.
  • Best Seasons: April to May is good for seeing Jinxiu’s alpine rhododendrons; June to October is suitable for escaping the heat and playing in canyon water; September to November has a higher chance of seeing seas of clouds.
  • Things to Note: Mountain roads in Jinxiu have many bends, so drivers unfamiliar with mountain routes should be cautious about driving at night. The “wild dendrobium” sold by the roadside can be difficult to verify as genuine, so buy with care. The welcome wine in Yao villages can have a strong aftereffect, so taste it in moderation.
