Wuzhou travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Sep 17

Wuzhou is humid, hot, and rainy in summer, so bring rain gear when going out.

Wuzhou is a small Lingnan city well suited to slow travel. Its century-old arcaded buildings, old-town lanes, and local food are all clustered together, so a weekend trip of 1–2 days is enough for a relaxed visit.

Itinerary Plan

  • Day 1 Old-Town Culture and Night Views: Wuzhou Museum → Former British Consulate Site → Baihe Tower (overlooking the confluence of three rivers) → Evening walk along the riverside embankment → China Qilou City (see the night lights) → Late-night snacks at No. 2 Vocational School Snack Street.
  • Day 2 Mountains, Blessings, and Old Streets: Baiyun Mountain (take the sightseeing shuttle) → Bingquan Soy Milk Restaurant (breakfast) → Dragon Mother Temple → Zhongshan Park → Dongzheng Road / Weixinli (walk around) → Return trip.

Main Sights Reference

Sights in downtown Wuzhou are fairly compact, and most can be linked by shared electric bikes.

  • Qilou City

A sizable arcaded street district with connected covered walkways, preserving the old-town style that blends Chinese and Western influences.

  • Wuzhou Museum

Located on top of Zhushan Hill, it offers views of the three-river confluence and an introduction to 2,200 years of Lingnan history.

  • Baiyun Mountain

The highest point in Wuzhou’s urban area, with wide-open views from the summit. You can also take a sightseeing shuttle uphill.

  • Dragon Mother Temple

An ancient temple backed by hills and facing the water, where you can climb to the 38-meter sacred statue and experience a strong folk-prayer atmosphere.

  • Baihe Tower

A good place to look out over the meeting of the Yuanyang River, and you can also visit the architecture of the former British Consulate nearby.

Local Flavors

Wuzhou’s food has Cantonese influences. Overall, it tends to be light, with some dishes on the sweet side. Old restaurants and street snacks are especially representative.

  • Paper-Wrapped Chicken

Tender, juicy chicken with a slightly charred aroma on the outside and a sweet-leaning sauce. It is a local classic.

  • Guilinggao

Slightly bitter at first, then sweet in the finish, with a springy, smooth texture. It is a common herbal dessert.

  • Scallion Oil Fish

Crisp, fragrant fish skin and delicate flesh, with salty-sweet scallion oil adding depth to the dish.

  • Bingquan Soy Milk

Rich in soybean aroma and smooth in texture, with a smoky firewood note. It is often eaten for breakfast.

  • Niuchang Sour Soup

A rich sour broth in which the beef offal soaks up the flavor well, with a distinctive sweet-and-sour taste.

Practical Travel Information

  • Transport: Many city sights are within a 3 km range. Shared electric bikes are convenient, can be used by scanning a QR code, and cost about RMB 2.5 per 15 minutes. During holidays, driving into the old town is not recommended because the streets are narrow and parking is inconvenient.
  • Where to Stay: Consider staying near Qilou City or Wangcheng Plaza, where sights and restaurants are concentrated and it is easy to walk or ride around. If soundproofing and cleanliness matter more to you, avoid hotels right in the center of the Qilou City pedestrian street and choose a newer chain hotel in the Hexi area instead.
  • Travel Notes: Most parks and indoor attractions close at 5 p.m., so plan daytime activities in advance. Qilou City is better for an evening stroll after the lights come on, and it feels different by day and by night. There are many mosquitoes in summer, so carry mosquito repellent with you.
