Wuzhong travel guide

Wuzhong is a city that grew up along the Yellow River. Life moves at a relaxed pace, local food is plentiful, and prices are fairly friendly. There is a local saying: “Travel in Ningxia, eat in Wuzhong.” Here you can enjoy Yellow River canyon scenery, experience a morning tea culture that has lasted for a thousand years, and try Ningxia Tan sheep.
- Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon: A national 5A-rated scenic area, with highlights including the 108 Pagodas, the Qingtongxia Water Conservancy Hub, and Yellow River boat trips. Route A is recommended: take a boat through the canyon and look out toward the ancient Western Xia pagoda complex along the way. It offers the most complete overall experience.
- China Yellow River Tower: From the tower, you can look out over both Wuzhong’s urban area and the winding Yellow River, with wide-open views. Visit in the evening to see the sunset over the Yellow River and the city nightscape.
- Tongxin Great Mosque: One of the oldest and largest surviving mosques in Ningxia, first built in the Ming dynasty. Its architecture combines Chinese-style pavilions with Islamic design, using gray bricks and tiled roofs. The overall atmosphere is solemn, and the scenery at sunset is especially good for photos.
- Haba Lake Ecotourism Area: This area brings together desert grassland, wetlands, shrubland, and other landscapes, far from city lights. It is best reached by car, and on clear nights you can view the Milky Way and the starry sky.
- Dong Mansion: A Qing-dynasty general’s residence and a major national cultural heritage site. It has a layout of three routes and six courtyards, with prominent defensive features. There are relatively few visitors, making it a good place for photos in a qipao or other traditional-style clothing.
- Wuzhong Museum: Free to enter, with exhibitions covering Yellow River culture, local history, and ethnic customs. After visiting, you can gain a clearer understanding of Hui hometown culture and Western Xia history. Commemorative stamps are also available inside.
Must-Try Foods in Wuzhong
Wuzhong’s morning tea and hand-grabbed lamb are its most distinctive local foods, and both are worth including in your trip.
-
Guoqiang Hand-Grabbed Lamb
The lamb is tender, with only a light mutton aroma, a good balance of fat and lean meat, a clear milky flavor, and a very soft texture.
-
Duyousu
The interior is carefully decorated, the lamb offal soup is rich and full-bodied, and the eight-treasure tea is also quite distinctive.
-
Mayi Restaurant
The mixed noodles served in a glass bowl are sweet, sour, and mildly spicy, with layered sauces and chewy noodles.
-
Yuxianglou
The eight-treasure tea has a strong tea aroma, the cold mixed beef is smooth and refreshing, and the potstickers are crisp outside and tender inside.
-
Lao He Ji
The lamb offal is stewed until soft and flavorful, while the cold mixed beef is fragrant but not spicy. A good choice for experiencing Wuzhong morning tea.

Accommodation and Transport Tips
- Where to Stay: The area around Wanda Plaza in Litong District is a good first choice. It is convenient for walking to the food street, and taxi rides to other restaurants usually cost only the base fare. If you want river views, choose a hotel near the Yellow River Tower. If you care more about a quiet nighttime setting, you can stay in a tent-style guesthouse at Haba Lake.
- Transport Guide:
- Getting There: The high-speed train from Yinchuan to Wuzhong takes about 25 minutes, making it suitable for a day trip or as a stopover for a rest.
- Getting Around: Wuzhong’s urban area is fairly small, taxis are reasonably priced, and you can hail one from the roadside. To reach Qingtongxia, you can take Tourist Bus No. 29. For Haba Lake or Yanchi County, self-driving or hiring a car is recommended for a more flexible itinerary.
Travel Tips
- Morning Tea Queues: Popular morning tea restaurants such as Duyousu and Xiangdingding are usually crowded from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning. Arrive before 7:00, or go after 10:00 to avoid peak times and reduce waiting.
- Choosing Scenic Area Routes: Route B at Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon is relatively expensive at 190 yuan and offers only average overall value. Route A costs about 120 yuan and includes the 108 Pagodas and a Yellow River boat trip, making it more suitable for a standard visit.
- Respect Local Customs: Wuzhong is an area with a large Hui population. Please respect halal dietary customs, avoid mentioning pork-related terms in public, and pay attention to halal signs when eating.
- Sun Protection and Hydration: Northwestern China has large day-night temperature differences and strong ultraviolet rays. Bring a sun-protective jacket, sunglasses, and hydrating skincare products. The local air is dry, so drinking eight-treasure tea in moderation during your trip can help.
