Jinghai travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 16

Jinghai, Tianjin, can serve as an eco-friendly leisure destination near Tianjin. It is home to North China’s largest freshwater lake, Tuanpo Lake, canal-culture attractions, and several family-friendly and resort venues. The attractions are spread far apart, so traveling by car makes it easier to arrange your itinerary.

Nature, Ecology and Outdoor Leisure

  • Tuanpo Lake: Tianjin’s largest freshwater lake, known as the “Kidney of North China.” The lakeside has cycling paths and walking trails. You can rent a bike to tour the lake and see reed beds and migratory birds along the way.
  • Guanghegu Tourism Resort: One of Jinghai’s larger family recreation areas, combining a zoo, hot springs, fruit picking and motor-free facilities. The panda house, Rabbit Kingdom and Oxygen Laboratory are the main attractions.
  • Ren’ai Hongyan Island: In autumn, you can see large areas of haystacks and reeds. It is known as Jinghai’s “Swiss roll” and is suitable for enjoying autumn scenery and taking landscape photos.

History, Culture and Off-the-Beaten-Path Visits

  • Samaranch Memorial: The only specialized memorial in the world authorized by the Samaranch family. It houses a large collection of Olympic-related items and has a distinctive exterior, making it a place to learn about Olympic culture.
  • Duliu Republican-Era Wooden Bridge: A century-old mortise-and-tenon wooden bridge built without iron nails. Old residences remain in the surrounding area, making it suitable for experiencing the character of a traditional neighborhood.
  • Dongwutai Temple: Founded during the Ming dynasty, its Mahavira Hall is the only purely wooden, antique-style building in North China, using a complete mortise-and-tenon structure. The temple grounds are quiet and suitable for a leisurely visit.
  • Chengguantun Canal Culture Museum: The only town-level museum along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It displays artifacts from canal transport and introduces the canal’s history of change. Admission is free, but reservations are required.

Recommended Jinghai Specialties

  • Sichuan Restaurant

Known for crispy fried chicken and various stir-fried dishes. The food is generally spicy, and parking near the restaurant is inconvenient.

  • Jingqiang Hot Pot Chicken

A hot pot chicken restaurant that has been operating for many years. You can choose the spice level, and its special sweet and numbing sesame sauce is ideal for dipping.

  • Song Ji Guofu Liuhuo Hot Pot Chicken

The chicken pieces are large and tender, and the dipping sauce is especially flavorful. Vegetables are available for self-service.

  • Lu Ji Yongxingde

Offers a wide range of pastries, including mung bean chaogao and little white pastries, as well as hot pot chicken.

  • Good Taste

A hot pot chicken restaurant frequently visited by local residents. Reviews are mixed, so choose according to your personal taste.

Suggested Itineraries

  • One-day trip (relaxed and fresh-air version): In the morning, cycle around the Tuanpo Lake Bird Nature Reserve. Have lunch near Tuanpo Lake and try local lake seafood. In the afternoon, visit the Samaranch Memorial, then head to Ren’ai Hongyan Island before dusk to watch the haystack sunset.
  • Two-day trip (family version):
    • Day 1: Arrive at Guanghegu Tourism Resort in the morning, visit the panda house, feed the fawns and try the motor-free facilities. Have lunch in the resort or nearby, then continue exploring in the afternoon or relax in the hot springs.
    • Day 2: Visit a century-old vinegar workshop in Duliu Town, tour the Republican-era wooden bridge, and try Duliu braised fish and white gaogan. In the afternoon, visit Dongwutai Temple and enjoy the atmosphere of the ancient temple before returning.

Transportation and Accommodation

  • Transportation: Jinghai’s attractions are quite spread out, so driving is the most convenient option. It takes about 40–60 minutes to reach Jinghai from central Tianjin. By public transportation, take Metro Line 3 to Tianjin South Railway Station, then transfer to a bus or take a taxi.
  • Accommodation: For a two-day itinerary, you can stay at the hot spring hotel or flamingo-themed hotel within Guanghegu Resort for easier access to the attractions. You can also stay at a farmhouse guesthouse in Duliu Town, such as Chunguang Farm Guesthouse, to experience rural life.

Practical Tips

  • Reservations and closures: The Samaranch Memorial and Chengguantun Canal Culture Museum are usually closed on Mondays. Confirm opening hours before setting out, as some venues also require advance reservations.
  • Mosquitoes and sun protection: Tuanpo Lake and Guanghegu have abundant vegetation, and mosquitoes are common in summer and autumn, so bring insect repellent. The sun is also strong around the lake and on the grasslands, so use sun protection.
  • Feeding rules: In zoo areas such as Guanghegu, you may not feed the animals with your own food. Only feed them special food sold by the park.
  • Flower seasons: The haystacks at Ren’ai Hongyan Island and the pink muhly grass around Tuanpo Lake are strongly seasonal, mainly appearing in autumn. Check the flowering period and whether the haystacks are still in place before visiting.
