Temperatures vary widely between morning and evening in the Jizhou mountains, so bring a light jacket.

Jizhou is the only mountainous area in Tianjin. Close to Beijing and Tianjin, it offers Liao-dynasty architecture, sections of the Great Wall, forests and stone villages, making it ideal for a two-day, one-night getaway.

  • Dule Temple: One of the three surviving Liao-dynasty temples, it was called an “unsurpassed national treasure” by Liang Sicheng. The Guanyin Pavilion houses a 16-meter-tall clay statue of the Eleven-Faced Guanyin. Its buildings are joined with mortise-and-tenon joints and have survived many earthquakes remarkably well.
  • Panshan Mountain: Emperor Qianlong visited 32 times and left the inscription, “If I had known about Panshan, why go south of the Yangtze?” The scenic area combines mountain scenery with historic sites. You can hike to Wansong Temple, take the cable car up, and return by shuttle bus.
  • Huangyaguan Great Wall: This section was built under the direction of the Ming general Qi Jiguang, and its name comes from the “sunset glow over Huangya.” The Bagua fortress has a maze-like layout, while Phoenix Tower stands at a high point with expansive views. Afternoon visits offer better light.
  • Jizhou White Pagoda: About 300 meters south of Dule Temple, this rare composite structure combines a Chinese multi-eaved pagoda with a Tibetan-style stupa. Its brick carvings are finely detailed, and the surroundings are relatively peaceful.
  • Xijingyu Cultural and Art Village: The village preserves original stone architecture, with most homes and courtyard walls built from stone blocks. It also has artsy cafés and wood-fired bakeries, making it a good place to slow down and explore.
  • Guojiagou: Known as a “water town beyond the Great Wall,” this village sits between mountains and water, creating a rare northern landscape of bridges and waterways. Visitors can stay in guesthouses, enjoy farmhouse meals and go boating. In autumn, you can also pick fruit and explore the dinosaur park.

Suggested itinerary

  • Day 1 (Cultural heritage + relaxed artsy stroll): Visit Dule Temple in the morning to learn about Liao-dynasty architecture, then walk to the White Pagoda Temple. Have lunch on Yuyang Old Street and try local snacks. In the afternoon, drive or take a taxi to Xijingyu Village to drink coffee and take photos among the stone lanes. Stay at a guesthouse that night and enjoy a big-pot stew.
  • Day 2 (Mountain scenery + Great Wall views): Head to Panshan in the morning. Taking the cable car both ways is recommended to save energy; alternatively, visit Huangyaguan Great Wall for views of the surrounding mountains. Return to the urban area in the afternoon, buy local specialties such as sesame-sauce eggs and chestnuts, and then head home.

Must-try foods

  • Reservoir fish in a big-pot stew: A common main dish at Jizhou farm stays. The fish is tender with little muddy flavor, while potatoes, dried green beans and wide noodles absorb the rich broth. It is served with cornmeal flatbread.
  • Jizhou sesame-sauce eggs: A popular local souvenir made by curing eggs in sesame sauce. They are savory and fragrant, with a flavor distinct from ordinary salted duck eggs.
  • Jizhou bowl tuo: Buckwheat dough is steamed, cut into pieces, and mixed with minced garlic, chili oil and vinegar. The texture is pleasantly chewy and smooth.
  • Sangzi bean-skin rolls with fried dough: A common local breakfast combination in which crisp fried dough is wrapped in bean skin. It has a pleasant soy aroma and a layered texture.
  • Jizhou smoked ribs: The ribs are stewed until tender with a light smoky aroma. They pair well with refreshing side dishes and are also easy to pack for takeaway.

Choosing accommodation

  • Hotels in the urban area: If convenient dining and transportation are priorities, stay in central Jizhou, such as near Jianshe Building or Dule Temple. These areas are close to Dule Temple and Yuyang Old Street and offer plenty of dining options.
  • Mountain guesthouses: For a room with mountain views, consider guesthouses at the foot of Panshan or in Xijingyu Village. Temperatures vary sharply between morning and evening in autumn, and mountain winds can feel chilly at night. Some guesthouses have private hot springs or pools, making them suitable for couples and families.

Transportation and travel tips

  • Getting there:
    • Driving: This is the most convenient option. From downtown Tianjin, the trip via the Jinjing-Jizhou Expressway takes about 1.5–2 hours; from Beijing, about 1.5 hours. Since Jizhou’s attractions are spread out, driving gives you more flexibility.
    • High-speed rail: Take a high-speed train from Beijing Railway Station or Tianjin Railway Station to Jizhou Station or Jizhou North Station, then take a taxi or bus to the attractions. Bus routes and schedules to more remote sites such as Panshan and Huangyaguan are inconvenient, so taking a taxi after arrival is recommended.
  • Travel tips:
    • Dule Temple combo ticket: A 40–50 yuan combo ticket covers Dule Temple, the White Pagoda Temple, the Confucian Temple and the Lu Ban Temple, and is usually better value than buying separate tickets. The Confucian Temple and Lu Ban Temple are small, so you can skip them if time is limited.
    • Parking at Xijingyu: Roads in the village are narrow and one-way, so traffic can easily back up. Park at the lot at the village entrance, then walk or take a sightseeing vehicle into the village. Avoid driving onto the main street.
    • Panshan fitness level: Hiking the entire route takes about five hours and requires good stamina. You can take the cable car up and walk down, or hike up and take the cable car and shuttle bus down. To reduce strain on your knees, avoid walking the entire route back on foot.
    • Temperature changes: Mountain temperatures are usually 3–5°C lower than in the urban area. Bring a light jacket in autumn; wear athletic shoes when hiking, and remember sun protection and mosquito repellent.
