The Daxing'anling region cools down quickly in autumn, so bring warm clothing.
Autumn in Daxing'anling is known for its larch and birch forests and the scenery along the border roads. Golden trees and pristine forests define the landscape at this time of year. The autumn colors last for only a limited period. By late October, it is often already late autumn or early winter, and falling temperatures, snow, or closures at scenic areas may affect your plans.
Best Time for Autumn Colors and Pre-Trip Checks
- Main viewing period: September 15–October 5. Birches and larches usually begin changing color in mid-September, with the colors most concentrated in late September. Early October may bring the first snow, creating a transition between autumn and winter.
- Late October travel reminder: By then, most leaves have fallen and temperatures may drop below freezing. Grassland activities such as horseback riding and grass skiing, as well as some guesthouses, may suspend operations. Plan for early-winter snow scenes and forests after the leaves have fallen, and call ahead to confirm that scenic areas and accommodations are open.
Main Travel Routes
You can plan your trip around either the “Hulunbuir Northern Loop” or the “Mohe Search for the North Route,” adjusting the itinerary to fit the time available.
- Hailar Northern Loop (6–8 days): This route suits first-time visitors who want to combine grasslands, forests, and border scenery.
- Route order: Depart from Hailar and travel through the Morigele River, Erguna Wetland, Genhe (for reindeer feeding), Moerdaoga, Shiwei, the Ka Line border road, Heishantou, and Manzhouli, before returning to Hailar.
- Highlights: The roads are relatively good, the scenery is varied, and you can experience the local character of the China–Russia border area.
- Mohe Search for the North Route (5–6 days): Consider this route if you want to visit “the northernmost point in China,” see the source of the Heilongjiang River, and experience the first snow.
- Route order: Depart from downtown Mohe and travel via Jiuqu Shibawan, the birch forest, Beihong Village, the First Bend of the Longjiang River, Wusuli Shoal, and Beiji Village, before returning to Mohe.
- Highlights: The focus is on pristine forests and the border river. The pace is generally relaxed, and a chartered car or self-drive is the most convenient way to get around.
Main Attractions
- Beiji Village: As the northernmost tourist area in China, it is home to the northernmost post office and northernmost outpost. In winter, you may also have the chance to try splashing water that freezes in midair and see the aurora.
- First Bend of the Longjiang River: Reaching the viewpoint requires climbing 998 steps. From above, you can see the Heilongjiang River make an Ω-shaped bend, with Russia on the opposite bank.
- Moerdaoga National Forest Park: The forest train is one way to explore the park. Along the route, you can admire larches and birch forests turning golden in autumn, and photograph the woodland scenery.
- Ka Line Border Road: The route offers views of the winding Erguna River and landscapes where grasslands meet forests. You can stop along the way to take in the views and photographs.
- Erguna Wetland: Known as “Asia’s First Wetland,” it offers a panoramic view from the mountaintop observation deck. Clear weather makes it easier to appreciate the landscape as a whole.
- Xing'an Reindeer Park: You can feed reindeer and sika deer at close range. The birch forest and grassland are also part of the visit, and the time around sunset is good for photos.
- Arxan National Forest Park: Main sights include Camel Hump Ridge Tianchi, the Unfrozen River, and the Grand Canyon. Autumn vegetation is rich in color, but viewing conditions depend greatly on the weather: colors are brighter on sunny days, while cloudy days feel cool and austere.
Transport and Accommodation
- Getting there:
- By air: Possible airports include Hailar Dongshan Airport and Mohe Gulian Airport. If direct flights are expensive, you can fly first to Harbin or Ulanhot, then continue by train or rental car.
- By train: From Harbin to Mohe, you can take K7039, known as the “Snow Country Train.” Rest overnight on the train and arrive the next morning.
- Getting around the region: The attractions are far apart, with some journeys covering more than 100 kilometers. Self-driving or hiring a car makes connections easier. Some sections of border roads such as the Ka Line have no mobile signal, so download offline maps before setting out.
- Accommodation:
- The tourist season begins in mid-to-late September. Rooms in major destinations such as Shiwei, Linjiang, and Arxan may be scarce, with prices doubling, so book at least two weeks in advance.
- Nighttime temperatures from October onward may approach or fall below 0°C. Confirm that heating and 24-hour hot water are available before booking.
- Staying inside Arxan National Forest Park reduces commuting. Accommodation in Arxan city is usually more affordable, but traveling to and from the park takes about an hour.
Local Food Guide
Beef and mutton feature heavily in the cuisine of Daxing'anling and Hulunbuir, with flavors that are generally savory and aromatic.
- Ice-boiled lamb: Ice cubes and lamb are heated together in one pot. This signature local preparation produces tender meat.
- Copper-pot hot pot: Fresh local mutton is cooked in a traditional Inner Mongolian copper pot and eaten with sesame sauce.
- Specialty shaomai: The shaomai in Erguna and Hohhot are well known for their thin wrappers and generous filling. They are often served at breakfast with lamb offal soup.
- Iron-pot stew: Goose or fish is stewed in a large iron pot, with corn cakes stuck around the sides. It is well suited to sharing.
- Russian-style feast: Manzhouli and Shiwei both offer Russian dishes, with common choices including borscht, braised beef in a pot, and rye bread.
Clothing and Travel Tips
- Dress in layers: The day-night temperature difference is significant in September and October. Daytime temperatures may reach 15°C, while mornings and evenings can approach 0°C or fall below freezing. Layer quick-drying thermal underwear, fleece or a sweater, and a windproof shell or light down jacket. Also bring slip-resistant shoes, a hat, and gloves.
- Keep devices warm: Cold weather drains phones and cameras faster. Use a heat pack to keep your phone warm and carry a high-capacity power bank. Before bringing a camera indoors, place it in a sealed bag to reduce lens fogging.
- Forest fire prevention: The autumn forest fire-prevention period runs from September 15 to November 15, with October carrying a higher fire risk. You must pass fire-safety inspections when entering forest areas. Do not carry fire-starting materials, smoke, or cook outdoors.
- Border access: Mohe and the Ka Line are border control areas, so carry your ID card at all times. The Heilongjiang River forms the border; avoid approaching the river, and do not cross the main channel or enter Russia without authorization.
- Self-driving: Grassland and border roads have speed limits, and cattle and sheep often cross the road. Drive at a controlled speed. In October, sunset is around 5 p.m. and it is fully dark by 6 p.m., so plan driving for daylight hours.
- Managing dry air: Northern autumn air is dry. Pack lip balm and a high-moisture face cream, and drink warm water during the journey.
