Hegang

Hegang is ideal for a slower-paced trip: learn about the history of this coal-mining city, try Hegang-style skewers, or head to the China–Russia border river for mountain and river scenery. October is a good time to see the autumn forests.

• Longjiang Three Gorges National Forest Park: Located along the China–Russia border river, it offers views of Russian forests across the water. Autumn is ideal for seeing the colorful foliage, while in April and May you may also see ice floes drifting downstream as the river thaws.

• Hegang National Mine Park: The open-pit mine and sculptures made from abandoned mining carts preserve traces of coal mining. During your visit, you can learn about Hegang’s industrial history and urban transformation.

• Mingshan Island Scenic Area: This island in the Heilongjiang River faces Russia across the water. It is home to the Heilongjiang River Basin Museum and the Russian-Jewish Cultural Park, and you can also take a stroll along the river.

• Beiputuo Temple: Set among the woods at the foot of Nanshan, its outdoor compound has statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. From higher up, you can look out over Hegang’s urban area.

• Hegang National Forest Park: Well suited to walking, it offers distant views of the surrounding scenery from General Stone. In autumn, you can also enjoy the colors of the forested hills.

• Where to Stay: Consider staying near Hegang Railway Station or Xinshiji Square. Biyoute Times Square and Xinjieji are within walking distance, and there are many nearby bus services; the original guide lists the taxi starting fare as 6 yuan.

• Intercity Transportation: Take a high-speed train to Hegang Station. If flying, you can first travel to Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport or Harbin, then transfer to a high-speed train or bus to Hegang; the original guide gives an estimated transfer journey of about 1–2 hours.
• Getting Around the City: Buses are available; the fare listed in the original guide is 1 yuan. Taxis are also convenient for short trips.
• Getting to Luobei: For Longjiang Three Gorges or Mingshan Island, consider renting a car or hiring a private vehicle and taking National Highway 331; the original guide estimates private-car hire at about 400 yuan per day.

Travel Notes

• Border Areas: Carry your ID card when visiting Mingshan Island and Longjiang Three Gorges in case of border inspections along the way. Do not photograph border guard posts or barbed wire, and do not fly drones in border areas.
• What to Wear in October: The original guide notes that day-night temperature differences can be significant. Daytime temperatures may be around 10°C, while nights may fall below freezing. Bring a thick down jacket, hat and gloves when visiting the windy riverbanks.
• Portion Sizes: Northeastern Chinese dishes and barbecue portions are generally large, so order according to the number of people in your group.
