Zhongshan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 30

Zhongshan is well suited to a short weekend trip and is fairly easy to enjoy with older family members or children. It combines history and culture, local food, and a relaxed urban pace.

  • Sun Yat-sen Hometown Tourism Zone: A 5A-rated scenic area that includes the Former Residence Memorial Museum and Cuiheng Ancient Village. Admission is free, but reservations are required. It is closed on Mondays and is an important place to learn about modern Chinese history.
  • Sunwen West Road Pedestrian Street: A century-old arcade district with Southeast Asian architectural influences. Its red-brick arcades are distinctive, and old-established snack shops and almond biscuit stores line the street. It is especially pleasant for an evening stroll after the lights come on.
  • Zhongshan Museum: A Lingnan courtyard-style building with striking red-brick walls. Its collection contains more than 16,000 cultural relics, and its exhibitions introduce the history of Xiangshan. There are plenty of interactive displays. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required, and the museum is closed on Mondays.
  • Qijiang Park: An industrial-style park converted from an old shipyard, with free admission. Old railway tracks, a water tower, and riverside lawns are ideal for walking and photography. You can also enjoy the sunset here at dusk.
  • Xishan Temple: A Ming dynasty temple halfway up a hill in the old town, where red walls and ancient trees create a peaceful atmosphere. Nearby Xishan Park preserves camphor trees more than 200 years old, and the higher parts offer views over Shiqi Old Town.
  • Yakou Village: The village has extensive rice fields and coastal scenery, making it suitable for a coastal cycling trip by rental car. You can try local clay-pot rice at the village entrance and spend half a day between the countryside and sea breeze.
  • Zhongshan Film and Television City: It has Chinese, Japanese, British, and American districts, with carefully designed sets. You can experience street scenes in Republican-era and Japanese or Korean styles, and rent a qipao or modern Chinese outfit for photos.
  • Zhan Garden: One of Zhongshan's larger classical gardens, laid out like a private Lingnan garden. Pavilions, towers, bridges, and flowing water complement one another. An admission ticket is required.

Classic Two-Day, One-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Shiqi Old Town Citywalk, local life and retro charm
    • Morning: After arriving in Zhongshan, visit the pink-and-white Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception, then walk to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Park to enjoy the old town's quiet atmosphere.
    • Lunch: Try Shiqi roast pigeon or clay-pot rice at one of the established restaurants around Sunwen West Road.
  • Afternoon: Start at Zhongshan Museum to learn about Xiangshan's history, then visit the Zhongshan Xiangshan Commercial and Cultural Museum to see its pink arcades. Continue wandering along Sunwen West Road Pedestrian Street and buy almond biscuits as souvenirs.
    • Evening: Climb Yandunshan Pagoda in Zhongshan Park for views over the old town rooftops, or head to Qijiang Bridge to photograph the Ferris wheel and clock tower together at night.
  • Day 2: Cultural sites and countryside scenery, a relaxed finish
    • Morning: Go to the Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Memorial Museum in Nanlang Town to see the century-old building blending Chinese and Western architectural elements. Then visit nearby Zhongshan Film and Television City for photos with a period feel.
  • Lunch: Eat in Nanlang and try Yakou clay-pot rice.
  • Afternoon: Visit Yakou Village to see the rice fields and coast and enjoy the sea breeze. Alternatively, return to the city for a picnic and a rest on the large lawn at Zimaling Park before heading home.

Must-Try Foods in Zhongshan

  • Shiqi Roast Pigeon: A signature Zhongshan dish with crisp skin and tender meat; even the bones can be chewed. Try it at Baobao Dian, Hongri Restaurant, or Yuanshi Roast Pigeon.
  • Zhongshan Crispy Pomfret: A National Geographical Indication product with firm flesh that holds up well during cooking. It is often prepared in a “six flavors from one fish” style. Fish King and Fengyuwan are worth considering.
  • Yakou Clay-Pot Rice: The rice has a fragrant, crispy crust and distinct grains, with generous toppings. It is a common local specialty in Yakou Village.
  • Huangpu Cured Meats: An important Cantonese cured-meat specialty, suitable for buying as a souvenir to take home.
  • Sanxiang Tea Cakes: A traditional intangible cultural heritage snack made by wrapping different fillings in glutinous rice flour. They are soft and come in both sweet and savory varieties.
  • Almond Biscuits: A common Zhongshan souvenir with a crumbly texture and a gentle wheat aroma. Established shops on Sunwen West Road Pedestrian Street sell them.

Transport and Accommodation Tips

  • Getting around:
    • Driving: Zhongshan is about 1.2 hours from Guangzhou and about 1 hour from Shenzhen via the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link. Since attractions and restaurants are spread across different towns, driving makes planning easier.
    • High-speed rail: Take a train to Zhongshan Station or Zhongshan North Station, then take a taxi to Shiqi Old Town, about 15 minutes away.
    • Intercity bus: Shenzhen has direct Shenzhen–Zhongshan buses to Zhongshan Expo Center. The fare is about RMB 18 per person, and buses depart when full.
  • Where to stay:
    • Shiqi District is a good first choice. Attractions and food around Qijiang Park and Sunwen West Road are concentrated, making the area easy to explore on foot and convenient at night.
    • If driving, choose a hotel with free parking. Parking spaces in the old town are limited on weekends.

Travel Notes

  • Reservations: Zhongshan Museum and the Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Memorial Museum both require advance reservations through their official WeChat accounts. Both are closed on Mondays, so plan around their closure day.
  • Parking: Parking in the old town is limited. You can leave your car at the Zhongshan Retired Employees Service Center or Xingzhong Plaza car park and explore on foot, saving time searching for a space.
  • Avoid peak mealtimes: Popular restaurants such as Baobao Dian and Fish King may have queues of one to two hours during busy periods. Arrive early or avoid standard meal times.
  • What to wear: Many attractions suit retro or film-style photography. Light-colored, modern Chinese, or Republican-era outfits work well. Wear comfortable flat shoes for extended walking.
