March 2026: Hainan Heat Leads a Mild National Month

March 2026 averaged a national mean high of 16.2°C across 433 cities and 31 days, with the strongest warmth concentrated in the leading warm provinces. Hainan stood out with a mean high of 28.7°C, ahead of Taiwan at 25.6°C and Guangdong at 25°C. At the cool end, Heilongjiang averaged 3.7°C, followed by Jilin at 7.4°C and Inner Mongolia at 8.1°C. The spread between Hainan and Heilongjiang was 25°C, giving the month a wide temperature range in the provincial rankings.

The highest readings all came from Hainan on 31 Mar. Chengmai reached 38.6°C, Lingao reached 38.4°C, and Danzhou reached 38.3°C, making them the three hottest city-days of the month. In total, there were 35 city-days at or above 35°C, spread across 12 cities. Baisha recorded the most such days with 7, Chengmai followed with 6, and Changjiang had 5, keeping the main heat signal firmly within Hainan.

The coldest nights were far below freezing at the start of the month. Heihe in Heilongjiang fell to -32.8°C on 1 Mar, the lowest city-night in the set. Hulunbeier in Inner Mongolia reached -31.8°C on 5 Mar, while Daxinganling in Heilongjiang recorded -30.8°C on 5 Mar. These values sat alongside the low mean highs in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Inner Mongolia, showing that March still carried deep cold in the coolest provinces even as Hainan produced the month’s peak heat.

Rainfall was heaviest in Hunan and Jiangxi. Huaihua in Hunan was the wettest city with 345.4 mm over 23 rain days, while Yiyang in Hunan received 327.3 mm over 23 rain days. Pingxiang in Jiangxi followed closely with 327 mm over 22 rain days. The driest totals were much smaller: Turpan in Xinjiang recorded 0.1 mm, Hetian in Xinjiang had 0.8 mm, and Jinchang in Gansu measured 2 mm.

The sharpest one-day temperature drops were concentrated in Xinjiang on 12 Mar. Beitun fell from 6.4°C to -12.4°C, a drop of 18.8°C, and Aleitai matched that move from 6.4°C to -12.4°C, also down 18.8°C. Boertala fell from 11.4°C to -5.9°C, a drop of 17.3°C. These were the largest single-day declines in the month.

Overall, March 2026 combined a national mean high of 16.2°C with strong contrasts: Hainan supplied the top heat, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia supplied the lowest nights, and the wettest totals clustered around Hunan and Jiangxi. The month closed with a clear split between 35°C+ heat in Hainan and subzero extremes in the coolest city records.
