June 2026: Heat Peaks in Xinjiang and Hainan

Compiled from 30 days of daily readings for 433 cities in June 2026; written once at the start of the following month.

June 2026 finished with a national mean high of 28.7°C across 433 cities over 30 days. The warmest provincial readings were concentrated in the south, with Hainan averaging 34.9°C, Guangdong 32°C and Guangxi 31.8°C. At the cooler end, Qinghai averaged 19.9°C, Tibet 21.9°C and Heilongjiang 23.7°C. The month therefore showed a broad summer pattern, but with a wide spread between the hottest southern provinces and the higher, cooler western areas.

The most extreme daytime heat came early in the month in Xinjiang and later in Hainan. Turpan reached 44.8°C on 1 Jun, the highest city-day of the month. Chengmai followed with 40°C on 25 Jun, while nearby Tunchang reached 39.6°C on the same date. Nights could still be cold in the west, with Ali in Tibet falling to -2.2°C on 3 Jun, Guoluo in Qinghai to -0.4°C on 5 Jun and Haibei in Qinghai to 0.1°C on 13 Jun.

Days of 35°C or higher were widespread enough to total 803 city-days, recorded in 145 cities. Turpan stood out for persistence as well as peak intensity, posting 30 such days in the 30-day month. Hainan also had long runs of heat, led by Changjiang with 27 days and Chengmai with 26 days. The figures put Xinjiang’s Turpan and Hainan’s interior counties at the center of the month’s sustained heat.

Rainfall was heaviest in Guangdong, where the wettest three cities all exceeded 1000 mm for the month. Shenzhen recorded 1161.4 mm over 23 rain days, Zhongshan had 1111.6 mm over 24 rain days, and Shanwei received 1073.8 mm over 21 rain days. At the dry end, Wuhai in Inner Mongolia had only 0.9 mm, while Zhongwei and Wuzhong in Ningxia each recorded 3.1 mm.

The sharpest single-day temperature drops were led by Anhui. Suzhou fell from 34.7°C to 21.4°C on 7 Jun, a drop of 13.3°C, while Huaibei moved from 34.8°C to 22.2°C on the same date, down 12.6°C. Zhaoyang in Liaoning recorded a 12°C fall on 3 Jun, from 34.8°C to 22.8°C.

Overall, June 2026 was a hot month nationally, with the strongest heat focused in Turpan and Hainan and the warmest provincial averages along the southern coast and nearby areas. Rainfall contrasts were also sharp, with Guangdong cities far wetter than the driest stations in Inner Mongolia and Ningxia.
