Ganzhou is known as the “Song Dynasty City South of the Yangtze.” Its old town combines Song dynasty heritage with everyday Hakka life. Most major sights are free to visit, making it a good place to slow down and explore on foot.
- Ganzhou Ancient City Wall: This stretch of Song dynasty brick wall is about 3.6 kilometers long and is the best-preserved wall of its kind in China. Walk along the river in the early morning or evening to enjoy the waterfront views.
- Yugu Terrace: A celebrated poem by Xin Qiji made this historic terrace widely known. Climb up for views toward the meeting of the Zhang and Gong rivers, or visit after dark to see the city lights.
- Jianchun Gate Ancient Pontoon Bridge: With a history of more than 800 years, this bridge retains its Song dynasty design and consists of over a hundred wooden boats linked together. Visit early in the morning to see the traditional fish market, or in the evening for sunset over the river.
- Bajing Pavilion: Standing on the Song dynasty city wall, this pavilion offers views of the confluence of three rivers and a panorama of Ganzhou.
- Songchao Night City: Set beside the thousand-year-old Song dynasty city wall, this district recreates a Song-era marketplace. After the lights come on, you can see visitors in hanfu and performances inspired by traditional culture. It is also a good spot for street photography.
- Zao'er Lane: This historic lane from the Ming and Qing dynasties stretches for more than 200 meters, with buildings combining Hakka, Huizhou and Western styles. Its stone-paved surroundings are relatively quiet and draw fewer visitors, making it pleasant for walks and photography.
- Fushougou Museum: China's only museum dedicated to ancient underground drainage systems uses Song dynasty drainage facilities to explain the engineering behind Ganzhou's thousand-year record of avoiding waterlogging.
- Wei Family Compound: The largest surviving Qing dynasty Hakka residence in southern Jiangxi is known for its layout of “nine courtyards and eighteen halls.” Its peaceful grounds are ideal for studying traditional architecture or taking photos with a historic atmosphere.
- Tongtian Rock: Known as the “finest grotto site south of the Yangtze,” this area combines Danxia landforms with thousand-year-old cliff carvings. The quiet wooded hills are pleasant for scenic walks.
- Ganzhou Museum: This nationally rated first-class museum has a 2,000-square-meter indoor tropical rainforest botanical garden alongside its exhibitions, which you can also explore and photograph.

Local Flavors of Ganzhou
Ganzhou's food includes many Hakka dishes and generally leans spicy. If you prefer less heat, ask for “mildly spicy” when ordering.
- Southern Jiangxi Stir-Fried Fish: This dish has a legend associated with Wang Yangming. The fish is briefly fried in oil, then quickly stir-fried with vinegar. It is crisp outside and tender inside, with sweet, sour and mildly spicy flavors. The sauce also goes well with rice.
- Anyuan Sanxian Rice Noodles: A common local breakfast, this dish features a broth slowly simmered from marrow bones, with pork liver, lean pork and small intestine. The rice noodles are smooth, and the broth is savory with a natural sweetness.
- Ruijin Beef Soup: Often served for breakfast locally, this soup features thin slices of fresh beef cooked briefly in hot bone broth, then served with shredded ginger and white pepper for a warming, savory bowl.
- Xinfeng Radish Dumplings: These dumplings have thin, slightly translucent, springy wrappers and a juicy filling of radish and pork.
- Hakka Mugwort Rice Dumplings: Mugwort is kneaded into glutinous rice dough to make wrappers for a filling of dried bamboo shoots and cured pork. The dumplings are soft, chewy and savory, with a fresh mugwort fragrance.
- Ningdu Pork Meatballs: Hand-pounded pork is mixed with sweet potato starch to make firm, springy meatballs. Served in clear soup or stir-fried over high heat, they are a representative meatball dish of southern Jiangxi.
- Shicheng Taro Dumplings: Wrappers made from taro and cooked starch are filled with fresh pork and bamboo shoots, then steamed. The wrappers are translucent, smooth and springy, and chili sauce adds extra flavor.
- Stir-Fried Pork Intestines with Cuguozi: The sourness of cuguozi combines with the crisp yet tender texture of pork intestines. Tangy and spicy, this dish goes well with rice, and its acidity helps cut through the richness.

Travel Tips
- Footwear: The old town has many stone-paved streets, and the ancient city wall has steps. Wear comfortable trainers with good grip; high heels are unsuitable.
- Reservations and Opening Times: Most free attractions, including Yugu Terrace, Fushougou Museum and the Wei Family Compound, require advance reservations through “Jiangnan Songcheng.” Many museums and exhibition halls close on Mondays, so check when planning your visit.
- Crossing the Pontoon Bridge: There are wide gaps between the wooden planks, so watch your step. Running is prohibited, and high heels are unsuitable.
